Burning Daylight: Why are the Streetlights of Presidio Heights ON in the Daytime?

Let’s see here, Presidio Heights has had fancier-than-average street lights for a while now, ’cause why not, right?

These days, LED lights are the new thang, so Presidio Heights is getting them as well. And SFGov puts up signs for the rich denizens asking, “Hey what do you think of the new lights, let us know,” kind of thing.

But these new lights are on like all the time. Like this:

Oh well.

Our streetlight people must think we’re made of money.

AND THAT REALLY GRINDS MY GEARS!*

Pick a stupid catch-phrase for the SFPUC to use about LED lights, which I’ve had in my crib for years:

1. leading edge

2. state of the art

3. world-class

The answers are #1 and #2 – I haven’t come across the SFPUC talking about the “world-class” lights they leave on all the live long day yet, but one of these days I prolly will.

*Not really. But I’m pointing out just one example of a pretty big difference betwixt how our PUC sees itself and how it actually is IRL.

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission invites interested community members to attend a public meeting to discuss our upcoming Street Light Wireless Control Pilot Project.

The purpose of this pilot project is to test a suite of leading edge wireless technologies which will be mounted on several new, environmentally friendly LED street light fixtures in the vicinity of Washington Street between Arguello and Presidio. Some of the wireless technologies will enable more effective monitoring and control of LED fixtures (including adaptive lighting, which allows for off-peak hour modification of street light levels), and some technologies will support other services, like electric meter reading, pollution monitoring and traffic signal control. The pilot project will allow us to try out the proposed technologies before the City begins converting all City-owned street lamps to LED fixtures.

We’re testing a state-of-the-art street lighting system comprising light-emitting diode (LED) street lights and wireless monitoring and control equipment. The new remote controls and ultra-efficient LED fixtures, which replace high-pressure sodium street light fixtures, have been installed in these neighborhoods:
The Inner Sunset, on Irving Street between 7th Avenue and 14th Avenue
Presidio Heights, on Washington Street between Walnut Street and Maple Street
Our public survey period ended at close of business on February 24, 2014. Many, many thanks to everyone who participated in the online survey and live demonstration events. You can read a comprehensive analysis of the survey results here.

Residents and businesses in the test areas were briefed on the installations during community meetings last winter. The new, ultra-efficient LED street lights will consume 50% less energy and burn three-to-four times longer than existing lamps. In addition, the LED’s will be:

monitored and controlled remotely (removing the need for members of the public to report broken lamps)

equipped with an adaptive lighting feature which allows for energy-saving off-peak hour adjustment of street light levels

powered by 100% greenhouse gas-free Hetch Hetchy hydroelectric energy (just like all City street lights)

[UPDATE: At least one person has moved back in, as of May Day 2014.]

Here’s your before, at the corner of Market Street and the man-made disaster of Octavia “Boulevard,” from just last month, April 2014, IDK, 10 days ago?

See down below, those cardboard boxes were the start of a homeless encampment that stretched north up the Boulevard:

How many people slept there each night? IDK, but there were spaces for like a dozen people.

Anyway, that was then and this is now – this is how things look today, May 1st, after the recent clean up:

See that? Homeless people be gone, replaced by “ol ol g” (DDG, for those of you who don’t read Starchitect or whatever the hell that font is called) and DM DEVELOPMENT, ’cause, you know, it just wouldn’t do to have those glorious names residing over where people reside.

Oh, and here’s the pitch:

President Barack Obama Picks Paula R. Collins and Alex Mehran as New Board Members of the Presidio Trust

Here’s the news of the day from our Presidio Trust, or perhaps it was last week’s  - I’m kind of slow on the the uptake sometimes:

“PRESIDENT OBAMA TAPS BUSINESS, CIVIC LEADERS FOR PRESIDIO TRUST BOARD – NANCY BECHTLE RE-APPOINTED BOARD’S CHAIR

Presidio of San Francisco (August 14, 2012) — President Barack Obama has named two prominent Bay Area leaders — Paula R. Collins and Alex Mehran — to the Presidio Trust Board of Directors. The White House also re-appointed Nancy Bechtle as board chair. Ms. Collins and Mr. Mehran are replacing outgoing board members J. Michael Shepherd and Bill Wilson.

Paula R. Collins is the chief executive officer of WDG Ventures, Inc., a real estate development company in Northern California, and president of Portfolio Real Estate Consulting.

Part of the original project development team for the Moscone Convention Center, Ms. Collins is a founder and director of Presidio Bank in San Francisco, a member of the national board of the Automobile Association of America and has served as an appointee to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Visiting Committee for the Department of Urban Studies and Planning. In addition, she is co-chair of the Board of Directors for the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, a member of the board of the Special Olympics for Northern California and has served on the Board of Directors of the BRIDGE Housing Corporation. Ms. Collins has been awarded the prestigious Silver Spur Award by the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research organization, in honor of her dedication to improving the quality of life and economic health of San Francisco; and has been honored by the National Coalition of 100 Black Women and the San Francisco Business Times. She graduated cum laude in urban studies from Mt. Holyoke College in Massachusetts and received her master’s degree in city planning from MIT. Ms. Collins replaces Mr. Shepherd on the board.

A Bay Area native, Alex Mehran is the president and chief executive officer of Sunset Development Company, a San Ramon based real estate development, investment, construction and management company founded by his father almost 60 years ago.

Mr. Mehran is chair of the Contra Costa Economic Partnership, a trustee of the San Francisco Ballet and a member of the University of California, San Francisco Chancellor’s Associates. In addition, he is a past chairman and current executive committee member of the Bay Area Council and is a former trustee of the Urban Land Institute and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Mr. Mehran received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard College, where he graduated with honors. He earned a law degree, also with honors, from England’s Cambridge University. Mr. Mehran replaces Mr. Wilson.

“Alex and Paula are joining the board at a very exciting time – the Presidio Trust is now financially self-sufficient and we are seeing the benefits of a decade worth of investments in the park,” said Craig Middleton, Presidio Trust Executive Director. “Alex and Paula will be instrumental in helping us expand the public benefit of the Presidio to the local community and the nation.”

A fourth generation San Franciscan, Nancy Bechtle grew up across the street from the Presidio, and, as a child would scale the base’s walls to play in Julius Kahn Park. Once, she was even kicked out for riding her horse on the base. Appointed to the Trust’s board by President George W. Bush in 2008, Ms. Bechtle was first elected chair in 2009. She is chairman of the board of the Sugar Bowl Corporation, serves on the board of directors for the Charles Schwab Corporation and is a former chief financial officer and director of J.R. Bechtle and Company. A past president and chief executive officer of the San Francisco Symphony, Ms. Bechtle has served on the symphony’s board of governors since 1984 and has also served on the board of the San Francisco Opera Association. In addition she has served on the board of the National Park Foundation, holding the board’s citizen chair from 2005 to 2007. Ms. Bechtle recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco and has received a Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award from the California Arts Council and the Investment in Leadership award from the Coro Foundation, among her many other honors.

“I am pleased to welcome these very talented and accomplished people to the board,” said Nancy Bechtle. “The experience that Paula and Alex bring will be great assets as the Trust expands its public-serving programs while continuing to keep an eye on ensuring the park’s self-sufficiency.”

The Presidio Trust is governed by a seven-member board of directors. Six members are appointed by the President of the United States. The seventh is the U.S. Secretary of the Interior or his designee. An executive director reports to the board and oversees a staff with expertise including environmental science, historic preservation, operations and maintenance, landscape design, planning, resource management, real estate development, public affairs and programs, law, and finance.

The Presidio Trust was established by the United States Congress in 1996 to administer the Presidio of San Francisco, an urban national park site that is located at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge. The areas overseen by the Trust include expansive open space and spectacular views, a 300-acre historic forest, and rare and endangered plants and wildlife. The park comprises nearly 6 million square feet of buildings, including 469 historic structures that contribute to the Presidio’s status as a National Historic Landmark District.”

All right, in answer to the first graf:

Uh no, not actually, I just oppose Rose Pak-style corruption in San Francisco, that’s all. Isn’t she behind this or something? Isn’t she the worst person in San Francisco, a cancer on Chinatown? 

In answer to the second graf:

Uh, no, I don’t care about swim and fitness. Maybe your anonymous campaign needs to broaden its scope? I mean, lots of people oppose corruption in San Francisco – they don’t have to live near 8 Washington to oppose 8 Washington, right?

In answer to the third graf:

Uh, how can a parking lot be “blight?” Actually, it probably looks like Heaven to our hassled tourists. And arent’ the people closely connected enough to SFGov to have a shot at this deal “elites.” by definition? #potkettleblack 

Hey, how about this, why not change “opponents” to “some opponents?” Then you’d have a chance of being correct.

Run Ed Co-Chair’s Nonprofit Got $1 Million from Lee’s Office

“Gordon Chin, one of four co-chairs of the Run Ed Run campaign to draft Interim Mayor Ed Lee into this fall’s mayoral contest, heads a nonprofit awarded $1,136,000 directly from Mayor Lee’s office this year, an increase of more than $200,000 over the previous year.

“In total, Chin’s Chinatown Community Development Center received an additional million dollars from other city agencies and is in line for a multimillion contract as part of the Chinatown subway project. Between 2008/09 and the current year, the nonprofit has received $8,017,767 in city contracts, according to the Controller’s records.

“During this period, Chin and at least one of his board members have made political contributions to members of the Board of Supervisors and to candidates for the Board, despite a 2006 law that bans contributions from officers and directors of nonprofits that are negotiating or receive city contracts…”

Now you kids are too young to remember, but back in the day Furniture Mart was the thang, full of visiting Midwestern honeys ready to par-tay in the 415. Good times.

But really, the reason why all those Midwest farmers daughters came back to San Francisco all those years, well it had to do with history, the history of when the 415 was the Capital of the West as opposed to Just Another Ci-tay Near the West Coast, you know, beneath L.A., Fun Diego, San Hoser, Seattle and Portland (yes, sometimes even Portland).

So now, all the furniture-crazy party girls par-tay every year in Vegas, baby, thanks to a whole lot of corporate welfare. But, somehow, a little bit of tiny, half-assed corporate welfare is going to make that all better. Somehow.

How is Changing Our Tax Rules Just for Twitter Not Corporate Welfare?

Answer: It _is_ corporate welfare, the practice of government picking corporate winners and losers, something any govmint isn’t really so hot at doing. Oh well.

Corporate Welfare – Free Market Fundamentalism often leads to corporate welfare because deregulated markets often allow corporations to become so overgrown, even to the point of monopoly, that their influence over the government balloons and balloons. They can game the system so that government programs end up funneling money straight into their own pockets.”

Is the Furniture Mart building covered in this deal? Don’t know. It shouldn’t be.

As seen from Fell Street. They used to have furniture shows here twice a year, don’t know if they still do.

What’s that? You say, “This boondoggle isn’t just for Twitter?”

Oh yes it is! Right now it is, anyway. Next question.

“But this scheme is ‘revenue neutral’ right?”

Nooope.

“But at least we saved the Twitter from moving away.”

Uh, maybe. The problem with the proposed corporate welfare is that it won’t save Twitter all that much money. So it’s like the Mayor recently signing up for the Twitter service – it’s a nice gesture, it shows we care about Big T, but we’re not talking big bucks here anymore. Maybe there was talk of that last year, but the current proposal is pretty weak tea.

So it’s corporate welfare, but Twitter won’t benefit too much from it. Is this really going to keep Twitter here? And if they end up staying, how do you know they based their big decision on such a small amount of money?

And then they’re saying how Twitter will have 3000 employees in San Francisco in 2020. Can I get in on this action? Can I place a bet saying how that’s not going to happen? What color is the sky in your world, the world where you know The Future? Why did you change your green eyeshades for rosy rosy rose-colored glasses?

Oh well. Maybe we’ll end up loving the Twitter from afar. But that’s O.K.

So Who Cares If Twitter Moves to Brisbane Or Not?

How do you handle things when the Twits (do they call themselves that?) from Twitter start Tweeting about migrating down to Brisbane for the winter and beyond?

Choose one:

1. “We are going to do everything in our power to keep Twitter’s headquarters here[Ooh, sounds expensive] or;

2. “Love your stuff, Twitter babe, too bad about that whole hacking thing a while back, yep them passwords, OMG, really? – she just flew up from Hollywood and she’s in your office right now? that’s swell, hey we’re going to miss you if you all actually decide to leave us, let us know if you need a temporary permit for the moving trucks or whatnot. Bon courage, gotta go…

And then somebody else would move into that space at Third and Folsom. You see how that works?

Does the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development “pay for itself?” Nope.

Does the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development “create jobs?” Nope.

Does the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development have the competency to pick winners and losers? Nope.
