“Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour” Finishes Up in Oakland Tonight – A Few Tickets are Still Available

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Last night’s show at the huge Oracle Arena was 90%-plus full, so I imagine it will be the same thing tonight. The seats aren’t cheap, but this is the official show from Michael Jackson’s family, so there you go.

Fundamentally, this is a Michael Jackson show for Michael Jackson fans (as opposed to it being a Michael Jackson-themed Cirque du Soleil for a more general audience, if that makes sense.) For more on this topic, Chloe Roth does a good job of explaining things here in the Culture Blog of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Here’s another opinion: “It’s amazing. Long, yet spectacular.”

Anyway, you’re never going to see the THIS IS IT Tour, so this is it, tonight is your last chance to see the substitute, your last chance to soak up the experience.

Kevin Spacey a Huge Success as Richard III at Our SHN Curran Theatre in Union Square

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

San Franciscans were very pleased with yesterday’s electrifying Opening Night of Richard III at our SHN Curran, the “intimate Broadway showplace.”

Per pirate-nurse Pat Mulkey:

Kevin Spacey as Richard III was Incredible! Whole production blew me a-w-a-y.”

A standing ovation for cast and crew – the view from above the Grand Chandelier:

Spacey was sweating through his shirt from the end of the first act – he brought it.

And that thing at the very end, like what happens after his character dies, you know, with the thing? He’s still dominating the dojo.

And oh, Alan Scherstuhl offers his thoughts here - don’t miss that.

Hurray!

OMG, Kevin Spacey is in Town – Still a Few Tickets Left for Richard III at the Curran – The Event of the Year

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

Kevin Spacey‘s run as Richard III from October 19th to 29th could very well be The Event of the Yearwe’ll see.

The stage as it looks today:

Remaining tickets are expensive, or for less-than-ideal seats, or both. (And, of course, you can always take your chances on the craigslist.)

But, you know, it’s Kevin Spacey after all. (Digging up my binoculars now, I’m srsly.)

See you there!

SAN FRANCISCO (August 8, 2011)…. SHN is delighted to announce the arrival of RICHARD III by William Shakespeare, featuring Kevin Spacey and directed by Sam Mendes, coming to San Francisco this Fall. The Curran Theatre is the only U.S venue, other than BAM in New York, to host this landmark event. Tickets for RICHARD III go on public sale Friday, August 19.

Known for carefully curated Bay Area-only theater experiences, SHN is expecting the show to be a highlight of the 2011 season.

“This is a really big deal for us, and for San Francisco,” says Carole Shorenstein Hays. “People will recognize the combination of Spacey and Mendes from American Beauty; now they’re interpreting one of Shakespeare’s best-known plays for a modern audience. It should be an amazing experience.”

RICHARD III places San Francisco on a roster of 11 locations around the world that have been chosen to host the production, including: London, Epidaurus, Hong Kong, Aviles, Spain, Istanbul, Beijing, Singapore, Sydney and New York. The Bridge Project’s production of RICHARD III is currently playing to sold out crowds at London’s Old Vic Theatre.

OMG, Highly-Rated Avenue Q is Leaving Our Orpheum Theatre This Sunday! Get Your Ticks Now.

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

You know all about Avenue Q, right? I didn’t tell you about it last week owing to its sold-out popularitiness. And now it’s leaving after just a short run.

Anyway, it’s:

“…an ‘autobiographical and biographical’ coming-of-age parable, addressing and satirizing the issues and anxieties associated with entering adulthood. Its characters lament that as children, they were assured by their parents, and by children’s television programs such as PBS‘s Sesame Street, that they were “special” and “could do anything”; but as adults, they have discovered to their surprise and dismay that in the real world their options are not unlimited, and they are no more ‘special’ than anyone else

All right, here’s the review from Row R:

“Don’t let the Bad Idea Bears fool you, Avenue Q is way more fun than a Long Island Iced Tea.  The cast is exuberantly musical and peevishly delightful. Puppets, porn & purpose — oh my!’”

And everybody else likes it too.

You will simply looooove these puppets. Find out just how much at SHN‘s Orpheum Theatre until February 27, 2011:

AVENUE Q WILL PLAY IN SAN FRANCISCO AT THE ORPHEUM THEATRE FEBRUARY 15 – FEBRUARY 27, 2011

WHAT : AVENUE Q tells the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who moves to NYC with big dreams and a tiny bank account. WHEN: February 15 through February 27, 2011

WHERE: ORPHEUM THEATRE (1192 Market Street)
