Here’s what 6th and Stevenson is like today…

Auweia – click to expand
…and here’s the vision for its future, below.
So, just as the horrible SFMTA recently conducted focus groups on the future of Polk, 6th Street is getting its turn.
I’ll tell you, if I were in charge of making 6th street safer, I don’t think I’d put “Slower Cars” at the top of the list.
How about “Less Untreated Mental Illness” instead?
Anyway, our blessed SFMTA will be hosting ”an interactive activation project on 6th Street (between Market and Stevenson)” on May 18th, 2013.
And Twitter will be there too, sort of.
In a better world, Twitter would participate because it wants to, not because it’s contractually obligated to do so.
(And Twitter would pay its fair share of taxes under the rules signed into law by that wild job-killing radical, Gavin Newsom, all the way back in 2004. Twitter, just give me your tax returns and I’ll figure how much more you should have paid and then you can write a check for the difference and send it in to the General Fund.)
NEWSFLASH: The people from the residential hotels you don’t like on 6th Street aren’t going anywhere.
By law.
Oh, and lots of people working at Twitter would still prefer to labor in northern San Mateo County, just saying.
Anyway, on with the show:
“Slower Cars. More sidewalk space. More mid-block crossings. Brighter lighting. Cleaner streets. These are among the ideas and desires recently expressed by the local community for a safer 6th Street.
Safer 6th Street is a collaboration between SFMTA, District 6 Supervisor’s Office, Twitter, Neighborland, SPUR, URBAN SPACEship and other community organizations to address the issue of safety in the 6th Street corridor, and gather further input from the local community as to what can be done to create a safer area for residents, workers and passersby alike.
There is an on-going community process to implement safety measures in the 6th Street corridor, including:
- Sixth Street Improvement Project led by SFMTA, for permanent traffic calming and pedestrian improvements in the corridor
- Supervisor Jane Kim’s District 6 Pedestrian Safety Workgroup, which has been advocating for traffic calming on Sixth Street for the past several years
- Activation projects led by the Mayor’s Office of Economic Workforce and Development
- The recent establishment of The Sixth Street Safety Hub, an SFPD sub-station
In alignment with this process, we ask – how can we, as a community, create a safer 6th Street?
On Saturday, May 18th, between 12-6pm we will be hosting an interactive activation project on 6th Street (between Market and Stevenson), to engage the community and gather ideas and feedback towards this question, with the aim of envisioning a vibrant area and helping to prioritize treatments to the 6th Street design.
Pick your medium – we’ll have a Neighborland board for you to freely write on, a Twitter photo booth, and a collaborative mural installed by ArtIsMobilus.
Until then, share your ideas and comment on others here or on Twitter using the hashtag #safer6th. Through a new integrated platform between Neighborland and Twitter, your tweets will display on the Question page. Any tweets that start with “I want …” and contain the hashtag will auto-magically become ideas on the Question page.
Come join and take part in creating action on the ground!”

OMG, would you look at this?
I mean check out all these deadly, beastly automobiles parked on Polk, the very same street that the SFMTA is trying to “complete” don’t you know:

I know, why don’t you take out all these spaces and replace them with a separated bike lane or something, SFMTA?
After all, Transit First, right?
Oh, what’s that? These are the spaces that the Board of Supervisors and their aides park in for free every day so that’s where you just happened to end your campaign of completion?
But don’t you care about safety, SFMTA?
Mmmmm….
“This project seeks to implement aesthetic and safety improvements for all users of Polk Street between McAllister and Union Streets. In accordance with the City’s Transit First policy, improvements will primarily be focused on people who walk, use transit and ride a bicycle along Polk Street. The project is funded by Proposition B General Obligation Bonds and is part of an overall citywide effort to curb pedestrian and bicycle collisions and to provide a safe north-south connection for people on bicycles. Pedestrian and bicyclist collision and injury data on Polk Street point to a corridor in need of safety improvements for all those who share the road. In fact, the southern portion from Sacramento to McAllister Streets is part of the 5% of San Francisco streets that have more than half of the City’s most severe pedestrian collisions.”

Apparently:
“People should have to pay for parking. I’m just wondering if there is a less punitive way of doing it for residents,” she said. “I was hoping for more thoughtful alternatives.”
Well that’s Phase 1 – it’s a start.
Phase 2 just might be Direct Action, taking it to the streets to pull up the infernal SFPark meters up by their very roots.
Like this. Achtung, Baby!

Until that time, the Revolution will continue to be led by Meter Madness and the SFPark.info.

Our Teatro ZinZanni has a new home, but Sarah Duxbury says that some heavy lifting still needs to be done.
No matter, TZ’s cabaret performers were on hand all smiles yesterday at the news conference* in the “50 Broadway” parking lot near the Embarcadero. This location will be ZinZanni’s new home, if everything works out.
(I’ll tell you, I can’t tell the difference betwixt Gavin Newsom running the Newsom Administration and Ed Lee running the Newsom Adminstration, fundamentally. I mean, Ed Lee is not an impetuous asshole, so that means he behaves better, he tends to show up at these kinds of functions with a smaller entourage and less drama. That’s good, I s’pose…)
Oh, there he is, to the right of the gorgeous Martian(?) lady:

See how this will work? The famous European tent they use will go behind the new building:

All the deets after the jump.
And get over to highly-rated ZinZanni (if you can still get tickets, perhaps on a Wednesday or Thursday) before they shut down on the night of December 31, 2011. It really is quite an experience.
* I didn’t stick around for the Bauer’s “Intelligent” Transportation part of the presser. You know, you really need to work hard at sucking to get a Yelp rating this low.** But Bauer’s is well-connected to SFGov, so there you go, there’s your bidness model.
**Even with the work of shill reviewers avec their bogus five-star ratings…

Here’s the scene this AM at the Community Youth Center (CYC) Bayview Branch Office, which provides resources & services for at-risk youth & families.
See? It’s Rose Pak’s political family melting down. (The metaphorical fuel rods haven’t breached the metaphorical containment vessel yet, but just you wait.)

Photographer Steve Rhodes finds this scene “awkward.”
And for good reason.

Here are the people who will greet you when you step into the new, bigger home office for ZipCar in San Francisco:

“Newly Expanded San Francisco Zipcar Office Debuts
District 6 Supervisor Jane Kim and local Zipsters Helped Welcome Zipcar to its New Space
SAN FRANCISCO, July 22, 2011 - Zipcar, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZIP), the world’s leading car sharing network, announced the grand opening of its newly expanded San Francisco office, located at 191 2nd Street, South of Market. Zipcar celebrated the opening with a Ribbon Cutting ceremony with special guest District 6 Supervisor Jane Kim, along withan event for local-area members, who the company calls “Zipsters,” featuring a raffle and complimentary treats from Jamba Juice and the local Rib Whip food truck.
The new office is a result of Zipcar’s growing success in the San Francisco area and provides the city the opportunity to further reduce congestion, emissions and parking demand. Zipcar first began operations in San Francisco in 2005, with a fleet of 29 vehicles in three neighborhoods. Over the past six years, the company has grown to offer nearly 1,000 vehicles in over 33 neighborhoods throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, making San Francisco one of Zipcar’s most popular markets in the nation.
“We have an extremely enthusiastic base of Zipsters here in San Francisco, and I want to thank our members for their loyalty and for helping us grow to where we are today,” said Michal Uribe, general manager, Zipcar San Francisco. “With the opening of our newly expanded office and the addition of new cars this summer, we’re pleased to now offer even more convenient car sharing options to residents, college students and businesses in the Bay Area. Zipcar’s long-term vision is a world where car-sharing members outnumber car owners in cities around the world, and our growth in San Francisco is helping bring us closer to this vision every day.”
Zipcar provides a viable alternative to car ownership, making it an important component of a sustainable transportation network in San Francisco. National studies have shown that each shared Zipcar takes 15 privately owned vehicles off the road and that vehicle miles traveled per driver is reduced almost 50 percent when car owners switch to car sharing. In addition, a recent Zipcar survey revealed that Zipcar members reported a nearly 50 percent increase in the use of public transit after becoming members – in addition to a 10 percent increase in cycling and 26 percent increase in walking – all of which help to reduce congestion, mitigate traffic and parking issues, and help reduce the city’s overall carbon footprint.
About Zipcar
Zipcar is the world’s leading car sharing network with more than 575,000 members and more than 8,000 vehicles in urban areas and college campuses throughout the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Zipcar offers more than 30 makes and models of self-service vehicles by the hour or day to residents and businesses looking for an alternative to the high costs and hassles of owning a car. More information is available at www.zipcar.com.

Well, in the Luke Thomas Fog City Journal this AM there’s the other side of this story about Chris Daly and Mayor Ed Lee from Erin Sherbert.
Click on over to the FCJ to see former Supervisor Chris Daly effectively offer support for the idea that the Mayor of San Francisco is running for the office of the Mayor of San Francisco.
Oh, and Chris is promoting the Let Ed Be webpage as well. Check the caption, below:

“Top Left: Willie Brown: the former Mayor and current lobbyist/columnist helped orchestrate the appointment of Ed Lee to the post of interim Mayor. Before this coup, many believed that Willie’s brand of pay to play politics had been exited from City Hall. Top Right, Rose Pak: the head of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Pak is a powerful political insider. Thought to be the mastermind behind the appointment of Ed Lee and the money behind the draft Ed Lee campaign. Bottom Right: Michael Yaki, a former Supervisor appointed by Willie Brown and lobbyist, made the first headlines with his “Draft Mayor Ed Lee Organizing Committee.” Bottom Left: Enrique Pearce, a political consultant with close ties to Rose Pak and Willie Brown, is the grease behind the latest Run Ed Run campaign. Last year, Pearce got in hot water for apparently coordinating an independent expenditure funding by Willie Brown to support a candidate whose campaign he was running.)”
What will we hear from next from the Buck Tavern?

I don’t know, seems as if “URGENT News” would be something like the feds improperly shutting down your office and hauling away your files at midnight, something like that. Not sure how urgent the latest message is…

(Pretty sure that Theresa Sparks will benefit a from Ranked Choice Voting, but not sure how much.
Anyway, You Make The Call about the urgency of this:
“Dear Friends:
WOW…what a week for our campaign on the endorsement front!
First, I was honored by not one but THREE of the major newspapers in San Francisco - San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco Examiner and the Bay Area Reporter. This editorials are a clear sign of how we are making history in this race!
Second, we had two new members join Team Sparks with the endorsements of IBEW Local 6 and IBEW Local 1245. We are honored to be endorsed by these two great labor unions representing electrical workers throughout San Francisco. We are proud to have them as part of our growing coalition which includes SEIU-UHW (22,000 Home Health care workers), BOMA, Small Business Advocates, Plumbers Local 38 along with elected officials such as Senator Mark Leno, Mayor Gavin Newsom, Supervisors Bevan Dufty, Michela Alioto-Pier and Sean Elsbernd.
Third, our campaign fundraising has taken us to a new level with an amazing group of individual donors across San Francisco. But, with the spending cap raised by the City again this week, we really need YOUR help to get us over the finish line!
Finally, as you may have seen, the allies of my opponents are starting to launch attacks on my campaign and, as usual, distorting my positions on the issues that matter to you.
Become part of our team today and help me get District 6 and San Francisco moving forward.
Yours,
Theresa Sparks”
This will all be over in 15 short days…

[UPDATE: Word on the street is that it''s wide open for those who didn't RSVP - there are 130 extra seats so you'd have a shot at getting in tonight if you so desire. REUPDATE: The cold dawn of Tuesday morning reveals that the RSVP requirement was strictly enforced, at least it was on one h. Brown. I don't know, I'm used to more open debates and forums and whatnot. I'd heard from one of the campaigns that there were only 170 RSVPs the afternoon before this event, so that meant that "it doesn't matter if you rsvp'd or not." Oh well.]
From Fog City Journal comes word of the District 6 Candidates Forum starrring “Sweet Melissa” Griffin and hosted by the South Beach / Mission Bay Business Association. All your favorites will be there, including:
Jane Kim, Jim Meko, Theresa Sparks, Debra Walker, and Elaine Zamora
All the deets are here. You might be too late to RSVP at this point, I don’t know.
You can’t elect a supe until Melissa Griffin hosts a debate of the issues. Here she was a couple years back in District 9:
