OMG, would you look at this?
I mean check out all these deadly, beastly automobiles parked on Polk, the very same street that the SFMTA is trying to “complete” don’t you know:

I know, why don’t you take out all these spaces and replace them with a separated bike lane or something, SFMTA?
After all, Transit First, right?
Oh, what’s that? These are the spaces that the Board of Supervisors and their aides park in for free every day so that’s where you just happened to end your campaign of completion?
But don’t you care about safety, SFMTA?
Mmmmm….
“This project seeks to implement aesthetic and safety improvements for all users of Polk Street between McAllister and Union Streets. In accordance with the City’s Transit First policy, improvements will primarily be focused on people who walk, use transit and ride a bicycle along Polk Street. The project is funded by Proposition B General Obligation Bonds and is part of an overall citywide effort to curb pedestrian and bicycle collisions and to provide a safe north-south connection for people on bicycles. Pedestrian and bicyclist collision and injury data on Polk Street point to a corridor in need of safety improvements for all those who share the road. In fact, the southern portion from Sacramento to McAllister Streets is part of the 5% of San Francisco streets that have more than half of the City’s most severe pedestrian collisions.”

Well it looks like the Upcoming Races Page at The Usual Suspects might need to get updated for District 9 because Uptown Almanac’s Kevin Montgomery declared himself a candidate for the Board of Supervisors on April 1, 2012:

[UPDATE: Barbara Taylor has the deets.]
[UPDATE II: And it should be noted that Andrea Cochran Landscape Architecture designed the landscape for this project.]
Well here’s the news from last week:
“U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan today announced the recipients of the 2011 Sustainable Communities Grants, totaling nearly $96 million. Twenty-seven communities and organizations will receive Community Challenge grants and 29 regional areas will receive Regional Planning grants. The goal of HUD’s Sustainable Communities grants is to help communities and regions improve their economic competitiveness by connecting housing with good jobs, quality schools and transportation.”
Our San Francisco Bay Area Metropolitan Transportation Commission scored $5,000,000 worth of these grants, so some feds dropped by to celebrate this afternoon.

And here’s Supervisor and MTC Commissioner David Campos. (To him, Nancy Pelosi “will always be Speaker Nancy Pelosi.”)

Remember this mural? I haven’t seen it in a while. Anyway, here’s where’s your Central Freeway used to be. Parcel G., specifically, per the Socketsite.

Well, this is what was promised for today’s noontime transit worker rally at the Old Federal Building on Golden Gate and Polk:

Turns out that Jesse didn’t show. (Here’s what you would have seen and heard.)
But a couple-hundred or so transit workers and allies were on hand at the plaza in front of Big Blue:

And here’s how they got there. How apropropriate!

Here’s who was there. I see District 9 San Francisco Supervisor David Campos, San Francisco Labor Council Executive Director Tim Paulson, and TWU 250-a Union President Irwin Lum, for starters:

Are riders and drivers really united? Not that I can see, not in San Francisco. I’m mean, I’m sure that all involved would like Uncle Sucker to rain cash down upon the City, but beyond that, there’s not much uniting these groups. It would be nice to cancel the already-useless Central Subway and use the extra billion (or two or three) that that would free up to pay for transit people are using today, but the system doesn’t work that way, obviously. Oh well.
Here’s a take from Greg Dewar at the N Judah Chronicles.

On It Goes:

Anyway, here’s the spiel:
“Transit service cuts, fare hikes and layoffs affect millions of Americans every day. You can help save transit and counteract the nation-wide transit crisis by rallying with the Save Our Ride alliance.
Save Our Ride was formed by the Transport Workers Union, Amalgamated Transit Union and Reverend Jesse Jackson to raise awareness of the transit crisis and to rally for the passage of transit bills that will allow flexibility of federal aid for transit. The alliance is an advocate for more affordable and efficient transit systems, better air quality and a greener future for America.
You can download the full press release here.
Come show your support:
June 29, San Francisco: Noon, Federal Building on Golden Gate Bridge
July 1, Sacramento: Noon, Federal Building, 501 I street
July 7, Houston: 11 am, Mickey Leland Federal Building, 1919 Smith Street
July 9, Miami: 2 pm, Government Center Building
Download the San Francisco flyer here.
Speakers to include: James C. Little, President International TWU; Harry Lombardo, TWU Executive Vice President; Warren George, President of International ATU; Reverend Jesse Jackson, Rainbow PUSH Coalition. Other speakers will include TWU and ATU local leadership, legislators, community and civil rights groups, riders who are suffering from service cuts and increased fares. (speakers subject to change)
Stay tuned to twu.org and ourride.org for speaker announcements and more information as the rallies approach.
The reason your fares have increased and your service has been cut is because the federal government has neglected transit for decades and the country’s on-going economic struggle that has slashed transit revenues has pushed transportation systems into their own crises.
“We can not allow our transit systems to crumble from financial neglect,” said President James C. Little. “We must work together to tell the federal government the neglect must stop.”
Federal subsidies to our country’s largest transportation systems do not allow enough flexibility for operating costs. So transit systems can use federal funds to buy news trains and buses (capital expenses), but not to pay the operators. If your bus doesn’t have an operator, you are not going to get to work on time.
Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-MO), and Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH), have proposed bills, H.R.2746and S3189, that would allow transit agencies to flex funding to suit local needs. Also, eight senators from the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee introduced a bill, S. 3412, to authorize emergency funding for transit agencies to help reverse fare increases and service cuts.
This legislation will help to save our transit systems, provide thousands of green transit jobs, and keep transportation affordable. If you take the bus, train, subway or streetcar to work and use public transportation to send your children to school and if you want to work towards a cleaner environment, less congested streets and green jobs, then come share your story and your voice and Save Our Ride!

This was the scene the other day at the LGBT Center at a Harvey Milk Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Democratic Club meeting in support of Community Choice Aggregation.
Here’s a report from KPIX Channel 5 (if you can handle a commercial beforehand.)
Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, Supervisor David Campos, Carole Migden, Paul Fenn, John Rizzo, Chris Jackson, and Eric Brooks, among others, were all there:

The fight over Proposition 16 is hotting up, certainly.

San Francisco’s Harvey Milk Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Democratic Club is hosting a Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) Town Hall tonight at the LGBT Center on the corner of Market and Octavia. CCA is:
“a system adopted into law in the states of Massachusetts, Ohio, California, New Jersey and Rhode Island which allows cities and counties to aggregate the buying power of individual customerswithin a defined jurisdiction in order to secure alternative energy supply contracts. Currently, nearly 1 million Americans receive service from CCAs.”
The special guests will be Assembly Bill 117 (2002) author Carole Migden, District 5 Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, District 9 Supervisor David Campos and San Francisco Bay Guardian Executive Editor Tim Redmond.
The whole shebang starts at 6:45 PM:

Right:
“District 9 is an upcoming science fiction film directed by Neill Blomkamp, set for an August 14, 2009 release date.”
Fair enough, but what’s up with all these viral campaign posters just put up in San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi‘s District 5 on Haight Steet in the Lower Haight?
Are these things kosher? I mean, didn’t the Rincon Hill blog just drop the hammer on Sony last week for temporary chalk Angels and Demons sidewalk stencil “grafitti.” Didn’t Sony just apologize to City Attorney Dennis Jose Herrera?
Are stickers a kind of graffiti as well?

“Property of Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc.” Click to expand – it gets big.

Did Sony pay a fee for this? (Doubt it.) Can I advertise my business for free on these poles too?

Finally made it down to David Campos for District 9 Supervisor Headquarters at 24th and Mission. It’s an impressive campaign for more than a few reasons.
He’s been performing well at debates and, consequently, he has a slew of varied endorsements, including the San Francisco Democratic Party, and the San Francisco Bay Guardian and the district’s popular supervisor, Tom Ammiano. The crime issue seems to be more of an issue in the Mission recently (to say the least), so voters might particularly value having someone with police commission experience. And also, he’s getting out there and spending lots of time meeting residents in the Mission, Bernal Heights and Portola.
What more can you ask for?
A somber evening at the well-attended anti-violence march on 24th Street last month:

A daunting list of supporters:

And David himself, in the background, on the phone talking to voters to the approval of Spider, the Campos for Supervisor Wonder Dog:

If you add in the fact that he’s raised the most money and he has a lot left to spend, you might conclude he has an impressive campaign.
Just saying.

There’s less than a month left until the big 2008 election in San Francisco, so it’s not too early to think about the Supervisor race in District Nine, aka The Mission and Bernal Heights. Here are the candidates to replace Supervisor Tom Ammiano:
David Campos
Eric Quezada
Eric Storey
Eva Royale
Mark Sanchez
Tom Valtin

This was the scene inside the Victoria Theatre (rentals available) at last night’s debate hosted by lovely Ivy League lawyer “Sweet” Melissa Griffin, the San Francisco Examiner’s City Hall Examiner.

200-something folks were in da house.

You can’t hide from the Big Board! All the candidates’ opinions on key propositions were posted in high relief for tout le monde to see:

What’s that – you want to hear what everybody has to say? You want to meet the candidates? Here you go.
Oh, you only want to hear from the front runners? Here you go.
Enjoy.
