Oak Street Blues: What Happens to Your Bike When You Lock It Up in Appointed Mayor Ed Lee’s San Francisco

Thursday, May 15th, 2014

So yeah, the chain and the padlock worked, but you’re going to need some way of keeping the wheels attached, when the freaks come out, at night.

Lesson: You Gotta Lock That Down

San Francisco’s Appointed Mayor Ed Lee Talks About Raising the Minimum Wage, But Election Day Poll Workers Make Less Than That – Why?

Wednesday, May 14th, 2014

All right, c’mon, “Apply to be a Poll Worker!

Attend one training class that will clearly explain Poll Worker duties.”

“All Poll Workers must arrive at the polling place no later than 6:00 a.m. on Election Day. Although the polls officially close at 8:00 p.m., Election Day does not end until all materials have been picked up (usually around 9:00 p.m. or 9:30 p.m.). There will be meal breaks during the day.

So let’s do the math:

Training in Civic Center before the election: 3 hours or so.

Game Day: 15.5 hours, less breaks = 8 hours straight time and let’s say 6.5 hours of OT at time-and-a-half

So what’s that, 3+8+6.5+3.25 = 20.75 effective hours of work?

Multiplying by the official City and County minimum wage of $10.74 yields $222.86 total pay.

And using the vaunted $15 per hour minimum promised by quasi-governmental spokesperson and noted Berkeleyite Randy Shaw, we arrive at $311.25.

And what is appointed Mayor Ed Lee offering these poor souls? Well apparently no pay at all for the mandatory training, and then:

“Depending on your assignment, Poll Workers are paid between $142 and $195  for working on Election Day.”

Is this a joke, you ask?

No, Gentle Reader, it’s not. They’re srsly.

I cry foul.

In any event, if you’re an inspector you can make  a bit more, but then you gotta deal with high school seniors with their Katy Perry and cell phones and whathaveyou. They’re intelligent, you know, but lazy. And if their work doesn’t add up the way it should shortly after 8 PM, well that’s tough cookies – you’ll hear the beep beeps from the waiting cars and then the kids are gone and you, the vaunted elections inspector, will be left to fix things up.

Anyway, you get something like this for your troubles …

…but you won’t get minimum wage.

Now why is that?

“Year of the Horse” Lunar New Year Forever Stamp Debuts in San Francisco – A Very Conservative Design This Time

Wednesday, January 15th, 2014

Here it is folks, halfway through January and I’m still writing “Year of the Snake” on all my checks. Haha!

Now while you’re chuckling at my clever joke, check out the reference to the “Chinese Chamber of Congress, which I assume must be a new somewhat corrupt Chinatown nonprofit that helps Chinese American voters with stencils(!) (to lockstep vote for the right candidates) and that helps to steer Central Subway money to the right contractors, etc.

And no mention of Rose Pak, mmmm.

Flags of Single-Party States Over San Francisco City Hall: Germany 1935, People’s Republic of China 2012

And you can’t see, but there are five stars on the PRC flag:

“The five stars and their relationship represents the unity of Chinese people under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. The orientation of the stars shows that the unity should go around a center.[6] The larger star symbolizes the Communist Party of China, and the four smaller stars that surround the big star symbolize the four social classes (the working class, the peasantry, the urban petite bourgeoisie and the national bourgeoisie) of Chinese people mentioned in Mao’s “On the People’s Democratic Dictatorship

In the center of the photo, you’ll find “heiress and socialite” Charlotte Smith Mailliard Swig Shultz, wife of Famous Republican George P. Shultz – check out her bio.** Now, which star is for her? I’m thinking it’s the star representing the national bourgeoisie, but IDK for sure.

Now That the Smurfs 2 Movie is Out, Let’s Recall the Time in 2011 When Mayor Ed Lee Had City Hall Lit in Blue for the Original Smurfs Film

Here’s a retread post from 2011.

Enjoy:

OMG, it’s SMURFS WEEK in San Francisco, just like they had in NYC.

Hurray!

So, even though we might not have a blue* Mayor…

…we do have a blue City Hall. IRL, SRSLY, this is what City Hall, the Highest Classical Dome in the Western Hemisphere,* looks like at night these days:

*Or sunburned, take your pick. This photo, which is sometimes used to show people what Ed Lee looks like, is way, way, way, way oversaturated

I would show you a one-click fix but I am ignorant of how to do such a thing. PhotoShop’s Replace Color on a sunburned area would be a start…

Oh, wait a sec, here we go – a simple black and white does the trick:

That’s better.

One way that you can tell that the America’s Cup isn’t the third largest sporting event in the world is that our Mayor no-showed the opening ceremony.

Uh Oh: “Substantially Lower” Prices for Some Tickets for the Exceedingly Unpopular America’s Cup Yacht Match

Thursday, June 13th, 2013

Crowd estimates for some days of our so-called “Summer of Racing” have gone down more than two orders of magnitude from just last year.

Yes, that means that the estimates are now at less than 1% of  the 500,000 per day that ineffectual San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee was promising  all the way back in 2012.

Here’s the news:

“We have decided to substantially lower our charter prices to benefit spectators who are seeking a unique and thrilling viewing experience of the races from prime positioning on the perimeter of the America’s Cup race course,” said Captain Stephan Sowash.

Of course most people won’t pay a dime to watch this unpopular “gentlemen’s match” It may or may not be broadcast on free TV for a zero or negative(!) broadcast fee. And some tickets have already been refunded (which didn’t cost the Larry Ellison people  too much because how many people in the world would actually pay, really?)

Here’s What Tonight’s World Series Viewing Party Will Look Like – But No Alcohol in Civic Center – Vote No on Prop B

Sunday, October 28th, 2012

You’re invited to come to Civic Center tonight to see Game Four of the World Series on a makeshift “Jumbotron.”

See you at 5:07 PM (or earlier, to get a good spot if you want to be able to actually see the action unobstructed.)

It’ll look like this, but probably with more Matt Cain than Timothy Leroy Lincecum on the screen:

Via RubyxCube - click to expand

The SFPD requests (more or less) that you transfer your alcohol to unmarked containers, thusly:

And, oh yes, speaking of the Rec and Park, Remember to Vote No on Proposition B (November 2012), the so-called “Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond”

Why?

Well, because Prop. B is too costly for San Francisco

And also because Reform is Needed at San Francisco’s Recreation and Parks Department.

Also because area lawyer Philip Alan Ginsburg would consider passage of Prop B (November 2012) an endorsement of how he’s running the RPD.

That’s why.

Now, let’s hear from San Francisco Mayor Ron Conway,* after the jump. (Spoiler: He wants you to go to Chipotle’s and spend your money before you blow town.)

PS: The after party will be in the Mission District – spread the word, bring fireworks.

*Poor Sony. It appears that any television-like contraption bigger than 100 inches now gets the generic term “jumbotron.”

Oh well.

The Mistakes of San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee – Chapter One: Calling the Hetch Hetchy Valley Restoration Concept “Insane”

Friday, October 26th, 2012

Here it is, in the national media, in the Washington Post’s blog site, for tout le monde to see:

San Francisco’s Spectacular Hypocrisy

That bit from Amy Crawford has this nice quote about Proposition F (2012) from error-prone San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee:

“As insane as this is, it is, in fact, insane,” sputtered the usually mild-mannered Mayor Ed Lee when the initiative was announced.

Now, was it a mistake for San Francisco’s so-called Consensus Mayor to label Prop F (and, indirectly, the supporters of Prop F) as insane?

Yes. It’s not what he meant to say, it’s not what he actually thinks.

Now it certainly would be inconvenient for San Francisco to lose control of Hetch Hetchy, no argument there.

But IRL, it’s not “insane” to think that maybe, just maybe, it’d be a good idea to restore Hetchy Hetchy at some far off point in the future.

The Valley, the “counterpoint” to Yosemite, before San Francisco improperly grabbed it:

And I can see those waterfalls

And I can see those waterfalls

Click to become as “insane” as the half of San Francisco voters what are going to say “Yes” to Prop F (2012) come November.
