What, Somebody’s _Starting_ a Newspaper in San Francisco? Presenting Issue One of “HATCH Beat” from Liz Fedak of Illinois

Well, here it is, an actual real 8-page newspaper “serving Cole Valley, Alamo Square, Hayes Valley and the Haights” – it’s the brand-new HAtCHBeat, Issue One*

Now meet Liz Fedak, Publisher.

Somebody who tried something like this a little while back was Eve Batey. Her online-only effort didn’t work out.

And speaking of online-only, Hoodline (mostly covering “Divisadero, Hayes Valley, Lower Haight, Upper Haight,” mostly) comes to mind as there’s a lot of overlap there. Liz has carved out an area that we can call District 5 Less The Inner Sunset.

Who’s taken notice already? How about D5 Supervisor London Breed** with her City Hall column and SFPD Park Station Captain Gregory Corrales with his Police Beat? 

And add to that an alphabet soup of SFGov departments, including advertisers with big ads such as the Department of Elections and the SF Public Library.

Check it out if you can. You’ll see a bit about Jimmy’s Old Car Picnic (1988-2013) that takes a decidedly anti-RPD position.

San Francisco’s Appointed Mayor Ed Lee Talks About Raising the Minimum Wage, But Election Day Poll Workers Make Less Than That – Why?

All right, c’mon, “Apply to be a Poll Worker!

Attend one training class that will clearly explain Poll Worker duties.”

“All Poll Workers must arrive at the polling place no later than 6:00 a.m. on Election Day. Although the polls officially close at 8:00 p.m., Election Day does not end until all materials have been picked up (usually around 9:00 p.m. or 9:30 p.m.). There will be meal breaks during the day. 

So let’s do the math:

Training in Civic Center before the election: 3 hours or so.

Game Day: 15.5 hours, less breaks = 8 hours straight time and let’s say 6.5 hours of OT at time-and-a-half

So what’s that, 3+8+6.5+3.25 = 20.75 effective hours of work?

Multiplying by the official City and County minimum wage of $10.74 yields $222.86 total pay.

And using the vaunted $15 per hour minimum promised by quasi-governmental spokesperson and noted Berkeleyite Randy Shaw, we arrive at $311.25.

And what is appointed Mayor Ed Lee offering these poor souls? Well apparently no pay at all for the mandatory training, and then:

“Depending on your assignment, Poll Workers are paid between $142 and $195  for working on Election Day.”

Is this a joke, you ask?

No, Gentle Reader, it’s not. They’re srsly.

I cry foul.

In any event, if you’re an inspector you can make  a bit more, but then you gotta deal with high school seniors with their Katy Perry and cell phones and whathaveyou. They’re intelligent, you know, but lazy. And if their work doesn’t add up the way it should shortly after 8 PM, well that’s tough cookies – you’ll hear the beep beeps from the waiting cars and then the kids are gone and you, the vaunted elections inspector, will be left to fix things up.

Anyway, you get something like this for your troubles …

…but you won’t get minimum wage.

Now why is that?

Yeah, I’m thinking that what our Department of Elections pays workers on election day is enough for about 11.5 hours, considering San Francisco’s $10.55 minimum wage and CA’s overtime laws. And yet workers need to labor something like 15 hours on Election Day.

I cry foul.

SAN FRANCISCO, September 25, 2013 – The Department of Elections is currently seeking poll workers for the upcoming November 5 Municipal Election.

It takes more than 2,500 poll workers to conduct an election. Poll workers operate polling places on Election Day and assist voters in many parts of the voting process. Some poll workers have volunteered during every election for decades. Poll workers include high school students learning on-the-job civics lessons, retirees, and hundreds of people who take a day off from their regular lives to be of service to San Francisco voters.

Poll workers attend a training class prior to the election, in which all duties are explained in detail. Lead poll workers must also pick up materials before Election Day and transport them to their assigned polling place on the morning of the election.

Applicants must be United States citizens, age 18 or older, and registered to vote in California. All positions are one-day assignments and pay between $132- $190.

Individuals interested in serving as poll workers must apply in person at the Poll Worker Hiring Office, which is open every Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. starting on September 27 and is located at the Department of Elections at City Hall.

Well, your California Citizen’s Redistricting Commission is mostly picked now, so brace yourselves for some changes, political boundaries-wise.

Turns out that all the members, so far, have degrees from the University of California, for better or worse.

And is it possible that 20-something percent of the first commish will be Asian-American? Well, it’s 37.5% AA right now and the bulk of the selecting is done, so there you go.

San Francisco Election Inspector: The Toughest Job You’ll Ever Love

(Or, maybe it’s the The Toughest Job You’ll Never Love. Haven’t decided yet, actually.)

I’ll tell you, if you ever decide to work on a one-day gig as an Election Inspector for the City and County of San Francisco, they’ll be sure to give you a checklist of tasks that stretches a mile. But, I’ll tell you, The System Works.

If people take the effort to vote, San Francisco will make enormous efforts to see that those votes gets tabulated.

Anyway, that’s the lesson I learned after pulling a double shift (16 hours!) yesterday.

I don’t know if I’ll be available to ever, ever do this again, but you, well, get involved if you want.

Columnist Ken Garcia Doesn’t Endorse Candidates, Oh No. But Slate Cards? For Sure!

[UPDATE: C.W. Nevius just issued his endorsement slate just now as well. What a coinkidink! Is he in the same machine/faction as Ken Garcia? Oh yes. Hey, do you think either of these two will run for the DCCC or other elected office someday? Stay tooned…]

I don’t know, Ken Garcia’s latest joint has this tidbit:

“…I don’t endorse candidates…”

But then he goes and endorses groups of candidates thusly:

“If you need guidance, there are several respected groups that carry election endorsements worth checking out, including the websites for the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club, the City Democratic Club*, Plan C, and the Building Owners and Managers Association.”

So he doesn’t endorse candidates, but he does endorse endorsements of candidates? O.K. fine.

If you vote for somebody not on this slate card, you might be electing a person who is not “sane.”

Per K.G., the “local Democratic party organization was the object of a coup.” Really? Isn’t a coup a “sudden unconstitutional deposition of a government?” Yes it is. But didn’t San Francisco voters vote in the representatives on that body? Yes they did. Were these voters insane from Ken Garcia’s standpoint? Apparently. Or they were misled. Or they’re stupid. Something like that. O.K. fine, if you say so.

I mean, did Aaron Peskin and Chris Daly “rid” the DCCC of “many of its moderate members” or did the voters? Oh well.

In conclusion, Columnist Ken Garcia Doesn’t Endorse Candidates, Oh No. But Slate Cards? For Sure!

*Confusingly, some of the candidates endorsed by the City Democratic Club don’t reside within the walls of the Chamber of Commerce Fortress of Reaction. Kenny-boy doesn’t really want you to vote for those people, actually, so consider the City Democratic Club endorsement slate an outlier, FYI.

Today is the last day to register to vote or change any registration information for the upcoming June 8, 2010 Consolidated Statewide Direct Primary Election. To facilitate last-minute registration, the Department of Elections will be open until 8 p.m. tonight to accept registration cards.”

So, maybe you’re not registered or maybe you’re registered not to your liking

Huge Harvey Milk Candidate Meeting this Saturday, Bay Guardian Issues Endorsements

The powerful San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee is, once again, having elections come November. You’ll be confronted, once again, with a ballot that’s filled with a bunch of names, most of which you’ve never heard of, and the obligation to check off your dozen favorites.

If you want, you can head over to the intersection of Market and Octavia this Saturday, April 3, 2010 and then head into the the LGBT Center‘s Ceremonial Room from Noon to 5:00 PM. Then you’ll be able to see and hear some of the candidates for DCCC in 2010 address members of the Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club.
