OMG, Ride the E-Line “Twin Torpedos” for Free This Weekend! Volunteer to be a Temporary Streetcar Docent

How would you like to volunteer as a docent helping out with the new-school / old-school E-line on October 6-7, 2012?

First, some background about how busy the 415 will be this weekend:

“Looking at what’s scheduled for that weekend, there might not be room in the city for many more people, much less cars. First, there’s the free Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in Golden Gate Park, a three-day event that drew about 800,000 people last year. That Sunday afternoon, the 49ers play the Buffalo Bills at Candlestick Park, while the Giants are hoping for weekend playoff games at AT&T Park, all guaranteed sellouts. About 60,000 people typically attend the Castro Street Fair, scheduled for that Sunday, while thousands more will jam North Beach for the annual Italian Heritage Parade at 12:30 on the same day. A different crowd will probably be at the Burning Man Decompression street fair, also that Sunday afternoon. To add to the fun, two mega cruise ships are expected to dock at Pier 35 over the weekend, disgorging thousands more tourists. Then, of course, there’s Fleet Week, which brings thousands of sailors and as many as a million visitors to the waterfront for the weekend.”

So you’ll be needed to help out all the visitors moving around on the Twin Torpedos, streetcars 1006 and 1008:

“We need several more docents to work the stops along the E-line on October 6 and 7, helping riders find the right platform and providing information about the service. We have docent books prepared by Paul Lucas, so it’s easy to learn what to do. If you’re interested, send us an email and we’ll get back to you.”

The Future is Now: Getting to Know Embarcadero Center by Looking at a 3D Model

All right, what most people consider Embarcadero Center are the taller buildings all in a row, from left to right, EC1, EC2, EC3, and EC4.

And then the Hyatt Regency Embarcadero is considered Embarcadero Center 5. (The boxy thing on top used to be a revolving restaurant, but, sadly, it don’t revolve no mo.)

And then, along came Embarcadero West (275 Battery), the black sheep of the family, as seen on the left:

(I guess they threw in short, short 301 Battery for completeness, but it’s been there for a good long time so it doesn’t belong in here.)

Now you better know Embarcadero Center.

All the deets:

“By 1862, this area of moored ships was nicknamed the Barbary Coast and had become a raucous district of prostitution, dance halls and thievery. The Coast continued to flourish until 1911, when Mayor James Rolph initiated a clean-up. Shut down for good in the early 1920′s, the area became San Francisco’s Produce District. A forerunner of the weekend Farmer’s Market that exists near Embarcadero Center today, the area’s narrow streets were lined with vendors selling fruits and vegetables. 

When urban renewal laws took hold in San Francisco in the 1950′s, city planner M. Justin Herman spearheaded a plan to redevelop the site where Embarcadero Center now stands into a mixed-use “city within a city.” David Rockefeller, John Portman, and Trammel-Crow submitted the winning proposal to develop the 8.5 acre site. 

Embarcadero Center’s four office towers were built in phases, beginning in 1968 and ending in 1983. The office towers, which have a daily population of 16,000, quickly became the corporate headquarters for many major companies. 

Further expansion occurred during the mid-1980′s when commercial property became available directly west of the complex. The project was expanded to include Embarcadero Center West located at 275 Battery Street. 

The Embarcadero Roadway Project has led to an entire renewal of the Downtown Waterfront District that is ensuring a bright future for Embarcadero Center. The Center is just steps away from the 42,000-seat AT&T Park, home to the San Francisco Giants baseball team, which opened in April 2000. The waterfront is also the scene of the new Muni F-Line transportation system featuring historic streetcars from around the world. Future projects include a cruise ship terminal and dozens of new restaurants, condominiums, hotels, and entertainment attractions. 

Embarcadero Center successfully combines a desirable office address with over 120 quality shops and restaurants. Stores range from local, independent retailers to names that are internationally recognized, while restaurants provide a diversity of cuisine and dining styles. The Embarcadero Center Cinema is a leading exhibitor of first-run art, foreign language and special interest films. The Center is also the site of frequent special events that include wine and music festivals, art exhibits, garden shows, summer Total Wellness fair and the Embarcadero Center holiday ice rink.”

The Embarcadero Chevys Closed Down Last Week Because Its Lease Expired? Really?

Well it was quite a mystery last week when, via Eater SF’s The Shutter, we all learned that the Chevy’s Fresh Mex at 2 Embarcadero Center in the Financh would close down forever as of last Friday. Per ABC KGO TV Channel 7, the employees were bummed because they only got three days’ notice of the closure - and as for any severance benefits, well that’s a big fat nada.

Why did this eatery close down without warning? Well, the manager (and management in general) didn’t want to say. But now, we have a statement from Chevy’s. See?

Their “lease expired.” Simple, right?

But that seems a little funny. (Of course, I’m not in the restaurant biz so I don’t know.) You’d think they’d have been able to give the workers more notice if this was just a matter of losing a lease.

(And you know, actually, I’d imagine that Boston Properties (or whomever you talk to when you want to strike a bargain on cheaper rent at Embarcadero Center) would be looking to make a sweet deal, based upon the low level of occupancy they have these days…)

Maybe Chevys’ management figured they’d be closing this store a month or two ago, but they kept this info a secret from the workers?

(When Warren Simmons, Sr. and his son Warren “Scooter” Simmons, Jr. started up the first Chevys (no apostrophe, please) in Alameda back in 1987, did they think that this was they way it was going to be? Oh well.)
