Here’s the bus ad:

And here’s the punchline:
“Paramount Group is going on the offensive on the waterfront, trying to build early community support for a planned 350-foot-tall condominium tower at 75 Howard St. in San Francisco.”
Wow, a war metaphor plus the word “offensive” in the same sentence as the “350-foot-tall condominium” that’s to be on the waterfront. Let’s call that a two-fer.
Oh, and who’s the spokesmodel for 75 Howard? Well, if Hitler came back from the dead and wanted to make money erecting tall buildings right near The Embarcadero, he’d dump Goebbels and hire … former Willie Brown spokesmodel PJ Johnston:
“On Jan. 10, Paramount held a community meeting to gather comments from neighbors. ‘This is a voluntary step on our part,”’ said project spokesman P.J. Johnston. ‘It’s not required, but it seems like the right thing to do.”*
So it all comes together.
Enjoy your new building, SoMA!
And people, if you have the luxury of walking to work every day, then sure, why not do it?
“Specialties: Policy advocacy, strategic communications, campaign planning, nonprofit management, communications coaching and spokesperson training, media outreach, writing, editing, research, and yoga teaching too”
* On Jan. 10, 1939, the Third Reich held a community meeting to gather comments from non-German speaking neighbors of the Sudetenland. ’This is a voluntary step on our part,’ said project spokesman Joseph “PJ” Goebbels. ’It’s not required by the Munich Agreement, but it seemed like the right thing to do.’

Avert your gaze, “art” lovers.
Via Uptown Almanac and Fecal Face: “Dropping in Diptych – San Francisco, CA – My buddy Trevor dropping in on Cupids arrow on the way to Atnt park.”

Is this what Gap founder Don Fisher would have wanted?
“Cupid’s Span
Rincon Park, San Francisco, California.
Stainless steel, structural carbon steel, fiber-reinforced plastic, cast epoxy, polyvinyl chloride foam; painted with polyester gelcoat
64 ft. x 143 ft. 9 in. x 17 ft. 3/8 in.
Commissioned by D&DF Foundation, San Francisco
Installed November 2002
Statement by the Artists:
Inspired by San Francisco’s reputation as the home port of Eros, we began our project for a small park on the Embarcadero along San Francisco Bay by trying out the subject of Cupid’s stereotypical bow and arrow. The first sketches were made of the subject with the bowstring drawn back, poised on the feathers of the arrow, which pointed up to the sky.
When Coosje van Bruggen found this position too stiff and literal, she suggested turning the image upside down: the arrow and the central part of the bow could be buried in the ground, and the tail feathers, usually downplayed, would be the focus of attention. That way the image became metamorphic, looking like both a ship and a tightened version of a suspension bridge, which seemed to us the perfect accompaniment to the site. In addition, the object functioned as a frame for the highly scenic situation, enclosing — depending on where one stood — either the massed buildings of the city’s downtown or the wide vista over the water and the Bay Bridge toward the distant mountains.
As a counterpoint to romantic nostalgia, we evoked the mythological account of Eros shooting his arrow into the earth to make it fertile. The sculpture was placed on a hill, where one could imagine the arrow being sunk under the surface of plants and prairie grasses. By slanting the bow’s position, Coosje added a sense of acceleration to the Cupid’s Span. Seen from its “stern,” the bow-as-boat seems to be tacking on its course toward the white tower of the city’s Ferry Building.”
From the peanut gallery:
“This thing is awful. I do not understand putting up a piece of ‘art’ that looks like it should be at Disneyland’s California Adventure, smack-dab in the middle of an already amazing view. Everytime I go by it it pisses me off. Leave the Bay view alone to it’s own devices.”
“This Disneyland crap makes me want to barf. If only Chicken John had been elected mayor, he would have run his pickup truck into this eyesore and San Francisco would have looked like a real city again”
“Ugh. Really? It’s hideous and tacky. It belongs in Cleveland, not San Francisco.”

We all know ALDO, but who was BRANNAN?
As seen on the Embarcadero:

Check it, it’s amazing.
After the murder of church leader Joseph Smith, Jr., in June 1844, the Latter Day Saints decided to relocate their center from Nauvoo,Illinois. Several possible destinations were discussed, including the Mexican territory of Alta California. In February 1846, with the approval of church leaders, Brannan and 245 other Latter Day Saints from New York set sail aboard the ship Brooklyn for upper California via Cape Horn. Brannan had an antiquated printing press and a complete flour mill on board. After a stop in Honolulu, Hawaii, they landed, on July 31, 1846, at the Mexican port town of Yerba Buena, present-day San Francisco, tripling the population of the pueblo. Brannan was appointed as the first mission president of the California LDS Mission.
Anyway, we honor this shyster these days every time we mention Brannan Street.
Hey, how about a name change?

Is this San Francisco’s ugliest large building or what?
But, as usual, the pro-business SPUR orgnaization has a boner for anything have anthing to do with PG&E and/or the San Francisco City Family Establishment:
“Embarcadero Substation. Built in 1973, this monochromatic, cast-concrete building on Folsom Street features slightly exposed aggregate that is not detectible to the human eye from across the wide street. Discoloration from smog helps accentuate its subtle curves and makes the building read as even more massive and brawny.”

Oh, what’s that, PG&E? You’re not the worst large utility in America? Oh yes you are.
Oh, what’s that, PG&E? At least this monolith hasn’t killed eight people through your gross incompetence? Well, I’ll give you that.
Oh, what’s that, PG&E? You want to charge what to the ratepayers instead of your shareholders? Oh, everything?
Well, sure, why not? Let’s give all our money to PG&E else they’ll kill even more people.
Consider it protection money.

Vaillancourt Fountain was a comment on its former neighbor, the Embarcadero Freeway. But the freeway is all gone, so why are we still stuck with the fountain?
Remember when SFGov shut down this fountain back in 2000 to save on operating costs?
Why not let’s do that again?

All the deets of yesterday’s drive-by:
“A specially designed and outfitted armored vehicle with DTS styling and a high-roof fitted to a GM four-wheel drive chassis was used in the second inauguration of U.S. President George W. Bush. While details of the modified vehicle, codenamed Stagecoach, remain classified, previous such vehicles indicate that it would have been upgraded with advanced armor and safety features in order to protect the president from various threats.
“Its successor entered service with President Barack Obama on January 20, 2009. According to GM, the manufacturer, the “2009 Cadillac Presidential Limousine” is the first not to carry a specific model name. The vehicle is a combination of a Cadillac limousine body on the chassis/platform of a GMC Topkick commercial truck and bears styling cues from the CTS and Escalade models as opposed to the DTS.”

POTUS was worried that he’d get too excited about seeing San Francisco’s new and improved, almost-America’s-Cup-ready “World Class Waterfront,” so he decided to take a nap.
Best of all, it’s a Cadillac:
