When Oh When Will San Francisco Be Rid of Vaillancourt Fountain? It Riffs Off a Freeway That’s No Longer There

Tuesday, June 12th, 2012

Vaillancourt Fountain was a comment on its former neighbor, the Embarcadero Freeway. But the freeway is all gone, so why are we still stuck with the fountain?

Remember when SFGov shut down this fountain back in 2000 to save on operating costs?

Why not let’s do that again?

Codename Stagecoach: Barack Obama’s Cadillac Monster Truck Passes By the Ferry Building

Friday, February 17th, 2012

All the deets of yesterday’s drive-by:

A specially designed and outfitted armored vehicle with DTS styling and a high-roof fitted to a GM four-wheel drive chassis was used in the second inauguration of U.S. President George W. Bush. While details of the modified vehicle, codenamed Stagecoach, remain classified, previous such vehicles indicate that it would have been upgraded with advanced armor and safety features in order to protect the president from various threats.

“Its successor entered service with President Barack Obama on January 20, 2009. According to GM, the manufacturer, the “2009 Cadillac Presidential Limousine” is the first not to carry a specific model name. The vehicle is a combination of a Cadillac limousine body on the chassis/platform of a GMC Topkick commercial truck and bears styling cues from the CTS and Escalade models as opposed to the DTS.”

POTUS was worried that he’d get too excited about seeing San Francisco’s new and improved, almost-America’s-Cup-ready “World Class Waterfront,” so he decided to take a nap.

Best of all, it’s a Cadillac:

Good call, Mr. President.

Friday, January 27th, 2012

The P&O* Cruises Aurora was just in town up near Fishermans Wharf at Pier 35 South for part of her 2012 World Cruise.

(Man, it must be tough running a cruise ship, with all the passengers having nothing to do on around-the-world trips except colluding on class-action lawsuits.)

Anyway, Bon Voyage, Aurora!

The Crazy Windmills of Pier 23 Plus Those “Free Leonard” Banners

Friday, January 27th, 2012

What’s this big metal tower thing on the left?

Of course it’s not actually a windmill, but maybe it’s some kind of air exhaust for something underneath the streetcar tracks of the Embarcadero?

Now, the “Free Leonard” tree banner, well, I think it’s this, but I remain baffled by that tower…

Come Take the Dell Ultrabook Challenge Today Near the Ferry Building: Meet the Windows Version of the MacBook Air

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

I guess. Actually they were closed forlunch when I passed by. Today they will be in the Marina in the morning and then at Fishermans Wharf starting at 2 PM.

I don’t know, maybe they’ll have some Dell swag for you as you check out their forthcoming XPS 13, which starts at $1000, which sounds a bit high to me but whatever.

The Great Skating Rink of Justin Herman Plaza is Melting Now – See It Again in November

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

Was Hawaiian Airlines against OccupySF? Or was it Disney? I don’t know.* I’ll try to find out though…

Anyway, the skating is now over for the 2011-2012 season.

Melting! I’m melting!

*Some jackholes at Boston Properties et al. would have you believe that these sponsors were up in arms over OccupySF, but I don’t think that that’s true, for either Hawaiian or Disney.
