You gotta figure the world-famous Market Street Cinema isn’t coming back anytime soon considering its URL has been sold off.

And I worry.

I worry about Mercedes, Porsche, Lexus, and Ferrari, among others.

How will they pay for business school now?

What we found out was, as long as you drop a lot of cash, ANYTHING goes in this place. ANYTHING. Once you’re in the “Members Only Lounge”, it’s a whole new world. Yup, Chris Rock obviously had never been to Market Street Cinema, because…yeah. Even the stripper was real with us, she was like, “You can call this a whorehouse, or a party house, or whatever, but guys come in here and spend thousands of dollars, so, we’re still here.” I doesn’t get more real than that.

OMG, Sting Plays Frisco June 2nd! At the “America’s Cup Pavilion?” Yes – That’s the New Name for Piers 27-29

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

I’ll tell you, I don’t know why former Mayor Gavin Newsom trying to cut a sweetheart deal with Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison in exchange for being made Honorable, Grand Exalted Ambassador at Large for the America’s Cup 2013 isn’t considered a form of bribery, but there you go.

Anyway, the upshot is that Sting will have a place to perform his greatest hits in the 415 on June 2nd, 2013. Ticks go on sale February 22nd. Deets below.

Uh, how many motor yachts are going to putt-putt across the Atlantic and through the Panama canal to see a staged race of overly-large catamarans and how much money will the Eurotrash spend in town while they’re here? Not as many/much as “projected,” that’s for sure. Presenting your wasteful (and yet somehow “sustainable”) America’s Cup 34:

Legislation by Chiu, Wiener, and Herrera takes on security issues at parking garages and lots

Proposed amendment to SF Police Code seeks to improve the safety of patrons of San Francisco’s vibrant entertainment industry and the surrounding neighborhoods

SAN FRANCISCO (Sept. 29, 2011) — Board of Supervisors President David Chiu, Supervisor Scott Wiener, and City Attorney Dennis Herrera today announced a major legislative step to curb late night public nuisance and criminal activities in parking garages and lots, in particular at those garages and lots near entertainment establishments. The proposed ordinance seeks to amend sections of the San Francisco Police Code regarding commercial parking permits and empower the City Attorney’s Office to pursue civil action against those who violate those sections.

“Making parking lots near nightclubs more secure will make it safer for people to patronize our vital entertainment industry,” said Supervisor David Chiu. “I appreciate the opportunity to work with Supervisor Wiener, City Attorney Herrera and the industry to put forward this much-needed legislation.”

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee Loses Famous LovEvolution Event (aka The Love Parade) to Oakland for 2011

Apparently.

Compared to all the other counties out there in America, San Francisco is the highest cost and highest hassle location to do any kind of event. Why is that?

LOVE: YES

As anyone who attended last years event knows, SF LovEvolution is now the largest electronic music event in America. Thanks to all those who have faithfully supported us and to the many new Lovers who attended last year. Because of the growth of LovEvolution, however, and to preserve our ability to parade down Market Street and party right in front of San Francisco City Hall, we’ve had to institute a few changes to this years event.

First, because of escalating city fees and the events growth last year, LovEvolution 2009 will require a large increase in all levels of traffic, police, security and medical personnel. This translates into a very large increase in how much money it costs to pull off this special event. As this is a non-profit event with minimal corporate sponsorship, we will be charging a $10 admission to LovEvolution this year in order to pay for the increased staff and other event expenses. We’ve always asked for a $10 donation but since most people do not give, donations are not sufficient to fund and improve the event. In order to be able to continue the event, we received special permission from the city for a $10 admission plan. This is as close to free as we could make it and at $10 for 250 world class DJs, LovEvolution is still the best bargain for an event of this scale in America. **We pay 100% of the costs back to the city, so without this change, we could not have the event. Please note kids under 12 with their parents are FREE. You can also get in free by volunteering. Of course – the parade is FREE to all and the entire event from 12noon- 8:00pm is still ALL AGES.** (After parties will vary by event).

Second, there will be no glass or outside alcohol allowed in the event. This has always been a condition of our permits, but when the event was smaller we never had to enforce. But the site was littered with broken glass last year that presented a safety hazard, so we now have to enforce this policy. This is for all our safety and is no different than at any concert or gated event, so please don’t bring alcohol or glass, it will be confiscated or you’ll be turned away at the gates.

On the bright side, the $10 admission will allow us to continue having this amazing event as well as to add some special production elements in Civic Center plaza. This year we are premiering the LovEvolution Live stage in front of city hall featuring an all out performance by The Mutaytor, and much more tba. The $10 admission will also allow us to reduce prices at our bars since we are now not as dependent upon alcohol sales to pay for the event. We’ll also be eventually eliminating entry fees fees for the floats so producers can make their floats even better. And YES – there will be ins and out allowed. And YES, kids under 12 with their parents are FREE.

Last but not least, the $10 admission will allow us to increase the amount of our non-profit contributions to other worthy organizations. Non-profits that received funds last year and/or we expect to donate to this year include:

Friends of the Main Library
Next Aid
Aids Housing Alliance
The Center for Sex and Culture
Beat University Scholarship Fund
Black Rock Arts Foundation
Bay Area Young Positives
Burners Without Borders
San Francisco Suicide Prevention/HIV AIDS Nightline
Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity
Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity

Thanks for your support and looking forwarding to a fabulous LovEvolution 2009!!

Dennis Herrera Throws Down: Operators of Troubled Club Suede in Fishermans Wharf Probihited from Reopening

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

I’ll tell you, you can win in criminal court all the live long day, but when the City Attorney of San Francisco wants to shut you down for good reason, like you doing things that are muy pro hi bi da do, that’s it. It’s game over, man, game over.

Now, when I was there at the Club Suede, at various political fundraisers and whatnot, everything was copacetic, but I never experienced it on a weekend night so I don’t know what it was like.

But what I do know is that these operators won’t be operating a nightclub at 383 Bay ever again. Get all the deets, below.

San Francisco’s Happy Warrior…

…wasn’t too pleased with the owners of the Suede nightclub:

Herrera secures injunction to permanently bar ‘Club Suede’ operators from re-opening a place of entertainment

Agreement includes $20,000 payment to the City by owners of Fisherman’s Wharf nightclub that was the site of fatal shooting in February

SAN FRANCISCO (Oct. 20, 2010)— A San Francisco Superior Court judge has approved a settlement and stipulated injunction negotiated by City Attorney Dennis Herrera that will permanently prohibit the owners and management of Club Suede, the notorious nightclub that was the site of a fatal shooting earlier this year, from operating an entertainment venue at the Fisherman’s Wharf property.

The injunction approved by Judge Peter J. Busch this morning bars defendants Hanson Wong, Ken Wong, Sunny Auyeung, Jason Gee, Frank Chan, Li Jiang, and Taliesin Entertainment Group, LLC from opening or seeking permits to operate a place of entertainment at 383 Bay Street, or maintaining the property in a manner that constitutes a public nuisance.  The agreement additionally provides that the property must be maintained at all times in compliance with San Francisco Municipal Codes intended to protect the health and safety of tenants and neighbors.

“This agreement protects the safety of nightclub goers and neighbors, and assures fair treatment to the vast majority of law-abiding entertainment venues that comprise one of San Francisco’s most vibrant economic sectors,” said Herrera.  “I’m grateful that the owners and operators of Club Suede recognized our firm resolve in pursuing this case, and agreed to a fair and reasonable settlement to conclude it.”

Club Suede was the site of a fatal shooting in the early hours of Feb. 7, 2010, and its operators have been reported for a pattern of nuisance and unlawful conduct dating as far back as 2007.  Though Club Suede voluntarily closed its doors some months ago, today’s stipulated injunction permanently prevents the operators from reopening a place of entertainment at the violence-plagued establishment.  The venue had been a frequent site of Police Department service calls for violent incidents, including some involving firearms; neighborhood +-vandalism; and crowd control problems, according to the civil complaint Herrera filed in April.  The club’s long established pattern of illegal and unfair business practices additionally includes operating beyond permitted business hours; permitting consumption of alcohol after 2:00 a.m.; inadequately credentialed security personnel; and multiple violations of state and local codes.

The case is: City and County of San Francisco and People of the State of California v. Hanson Wong et al., S.F. Superior Court case no. 498-677, filed Apr. 15, 2010.  A copy of the court order and additional documentation is available on the City Attorney’s Web site at http://sfcityattorney.org/index.aspx?page=317.

So, “B” it is.
