Uh Oh: “Substantially Lower” Prices for Some Tickets for the Exceedingly Unpopular America’s Cup Yacht Match

Crowd estimates for some days of our so-called “Summer of Racing” have gone down more than two orders of magnitude from just last year.

Yes, that means that the estimates are now at less than 1% of  the 500,000 per day that ineffectual San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee was promising  all the way back in 2012.

Here’s the news:

“We have decided to substantially lower our charter prices to benefit spectators who are seeking a unique and thrilling viewing experience of the races from prime positioning on the perimeter of the America’s Cup race course,” said Captain Stephan Sowash.

Of course most people won’t pay a dime to watch this unpopular “gentlemen’s match” It may or may not be broadcast on free TV for a zero or negative(!) broadcast fee. And some tickets have already been refunded (which didn’t cost the Larry Ellison people  too much because how many people in the world would actually pay, really?)

· Red Bull Youth America’s Cup | September 1st – 4th

Red Bull Youth America’s Cup features young, talented sailors aged 19 to 24 comprised of six sailors on various national teams. This is an opportunity to see the next America’s Cup generation of competitors.

· Super Yacht Regatta | September 9th, 11th and 13th

Participating in their own regatta, these magnificent super yachts will astonish as they race for the very first time in this inaugural event.

· America’s Cup Finals | September 7th – 20th

For the first time since 1851, America’s Cup is being held in picturesque San Francisco and may not be back for years to come. A great match-up between defender Oracle Team USA and the winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup Finals.

ZOMG, the Ziptrek Zipline is Coming Back to San Francisco for the Summer of 2011! Just $29 a Ride

Here’s the news from AkitIt’s ba-aaaack! Its the ZipTrek EcoTours zipline* (or ziplines, as they will have two, side-by-side). Deets are below.

Now, last year, back in 2010, the rides were free, so people were lining up at 3:00 AM. But this year, the cost will be $29, so that will certainly cut down on the riff-raff, and therefore surely shorten the queue.

(And oh, our friends from up in the Great White North just told me that they will be highly disappointed if Edwin Lee, San Francisco’s once (and future?) Mayor chickens out, if he blows off his obligation. Other Mayors have done it and it all worked out fine. See below for one example…)

The deets:

All guests are required to sign an Assumption of Risks and Release of Liability Agreement (coming soon) before zipping. Under 19 requires signature by a parent or guardian.

The ziplines are gravity fed, so guests do not have to worry about controlling their own speed. Guides are stationed at each tower to connect (launch platform) and disconnect (landing platform) each and every guest. Age restrictions apply and guests must weigh more than 65 pounds and no more than a maximum of 275 pounds.

Those melon-farming, estate-holding millionaire NIMBYs and small-time millionaire bidness owners of Cow Hollow and the Marina have slowed things down long enough at our Presidio, don’t you think? So why don’t you get up there this month to help the process along, to help us get past the NIMBY, that balrog betwixt Us and Progress.

And while you’re at it, don’t forget about the moribund Main Post Theatre – it’s been sitting around empty and unused for donkey’s years. (Have San Francisco movie theatre owners paid cash money to NIMBY groups to oppose the reopening of the Main Post Theatre? Yes, San Francisco movie theatre owners have. In that way, they are almost as bad as Harvest & Rowe owner Alison Rowe physically blocking the more popular competition earlier this year. Oh well.)

The Presidio Visitor Experience – A Public Workshop Series

Six workshops held March 22 through May 31.

What makes an experience extraordinary?

The Presidio of San Francisco has the potential to engage the local community and visitors in exciting and innovative ways. What would make the Presidio visitor experience relevant, inspiring, and meaningful? What programs, tools, and activities would help people participate in and connect with this unique urban national park?

The Presidio Trust, the National Park Service, and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy invite you to join us for a series of facilitated workshops to share your ideas about how hiking, biking, bird watching, stewardship, archaeology, architecture, and history can be made more vibrant for our community. You’ll also learn about the parks existing “Centers of Engagement” such as Crissy Field Center and the Stewardship and Sustainability Center, as well as facilities now in the planning stage, including the Visitor Center and Heritage Center.

Workshops will include a mix of discussions with subject experts, brainstorming and public comment.

Graduation Gifts 2010 – Is the Apple iPad “The Best Way to Experience the Web?” No.

I’ll tell you, back in my day, the ideal graduation gift for rich kids was a baby BMW of some sort – you know, with a giant bow atop a convertible roof. But Steve Jobs is trying to upset the Apple cart by getting people to think that an iPad is the best gift for matriculates.

I don’t know, maybe it is. However, this new ad campaign… 

…says the iPad is “The Best Way to Experience the Web.”

First of all, Apple means the best portable way to experience the web, right? And then, what’s this deal about using the word “experience” as a verb? (Is “experiencing the web” a passive event like watching a movie? Are you a creator, at least sometimes, or a merely a consumer of the Web? Mmmm.)

Anywho, the big beef, of course, if the absence of Adobe’s Flash. I know that it, like a strong federal government, might whither away at some point, as Lenin said, but we aint there yet, comrade. In 2010, anyway, You Can’t “Experience” the Web Without Flash.

The smaller beef would be the absence of industry-standard inputs and outputs. I’ll tell you, I wouldn’t trade my aging netbook, which is worth about $100 and was somewhat crippled by one of the many Intel vs. NVIDIA spats, for any kind of iPad. I mean, iPads can’t run Photoshop or nothing, right? (BTW, is there an App for Photoshop? I’d like to see what that would look like. Srsly.) Oh, to run ‘Shop I’d need a MacBook Air (Apple’s name for their expensive netbook with hinges that used to fall apart if you looked at them the wrong way) or a four-figure laptop? Oh, O.K.

Regular Web is to expensive, portable, compromised iPad Web as

Regular bike is to expensive, portable, compromised Dahon Brompton bike.

Brompton folding bikes are nice for the people who use them for commuting. (They’re pretty expensive, and there are a lot of design compromises involved of course.) These things are popular, but are they The Best Way to Experience Cycling? Hells no. 

A regular bike is cheaper AND better for most people of course. 

Just saying.

Is It “Nearly Impossible” to Ride the Justin Herman Plaza Zipline? No, No It’s Not

Per NBCBayArea, our Justin Herman Plaza Zipline is “nearly impossible to ride” owing to its popularity.

And yet, almost 1000 souls enjoy its charms every day. Mmmm. It wasn’t impossible for all those people to ride, right?

Irregardless, NBC’s accounts of when people got into line and when they were able to ride that day (if ever) are enlightening. And, agreed, it’s probably not a good use of time to drive all the way up from San Hoser just to try to go for a 20-second zip.

Will you have the guts to climb this temporary tower (80 feet tall!) down near Embarcadero Station to earn the right to tell your friends you rode the Justin Herman Plaza Zip Line?

The fun starts tomorrow, April 8th around lunchtime and it’ll stay all the way ’til April 18th, 2010.

The zip line will start from a launch tower 80 feet off the ground and will carry users 680 feet to a 30-foot-tall landing tower. The zip-line will be free to the public and open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. through April 18. Thursday’s launch event is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. and will include performances by the Le-La-La Dancers, an aboriginal dance troupe from Vancouver Island.”

Those people in British Columbia, they like to have fun. So, in order to get you to think about taking your next vacay up in the Great White, they’re going to install a 600 680-foot-long zip-line* in Embarcadero Square and run it for eleven days starting April 8th, 2010. And, assuming you meet their physical requirements (it looks like I’ll qualify, but 280-pound Epic Bearded Man Thomas Bruso probably won’t), you’ll be able to harness up and go for a 225-yard ride FOR FREE.

Imagine zooming over the giant white tent they’re constructing for Peter Pan (opening April 27th!) at neighboring Sue Bierman Park. You can fly, Wendy, you can fly.
