Here’s how things look on Geary during our recent rains…
…and here’s a 14 year old San Jose Mercury News report on the same group at the same location:
They’ve become part of the landscape on Geary and Laguna. Every morning they wave and say, “Good morning,” to the San Francisco police officer on duty, Xu said. Every evening, they say, “Good night.” They are so familiar with the postal carrier they know when a substitute is walking the route and greet both warmly.
Across the street, a San Francisco police officer sits in his vehicle, reading a paper. The cops hardly think a dozen old people and mothers with kids in tow are a threat to the People’s Republic of China, but as a matter of policy, the police dispatch an officer whenever there is a demonstration in front of the consulate.
The officer on the scene may change, but one keeps in contact with the protesters and the consulate: officer Jeff Roth, the event coordinator at Northern Station, which handles more than a few consulates because the district straddles the Western Addition, Pacific Heights and the Marina.
“They aren’t happy about it, but they don’t really have a say in the matter,” Roth said of the consulate officials.
Other protests — over Tibet and the like — have brought requests from the consulate in the past for police to stop protesters, Roth said. “We’ve explained, ‘Yes, the consulate is Chinese property, but this is America — the protesters have their First Amendment rights.'”
I’ll tell you, it’s not my habit to repost SJMN articles, but this one appears to have gone missing. If somebody can find an official link, please send it my way, by all means. (I hope it’s archived somewhere – it’s a bit surprising to me how it’s been lost in the sands of time after just 14 years.
In the meantime, this is my best guess as to how this article appeared back at the turn of the century:
Shen Yun, the “Falun Gong Show,” Plays Our Famous Opera House – Who’s Embarrassed? Chinese Consulate, Rose PakFriday, December 27th, 2013
Our world-famous Beaux-Arts War Memorial Opera House will once again host SHEN YUN, aka The Falun Gong Show.
See? January 4-12, 2014:

Our Chinese consulate over in the Japantown area is keeping quiet this go-around, but the people there are nevertheless steamed about this show. As is Chinatown strongman / Chinese consulate “advisor” Rose Pak, oh well.
But things could be worse. Remember this one from a half-decade back? This gal suspended herself from the roof of the consulate on Laguna to protest about Tibet. See?
Source unknown This could be a one-of-a-kind photo
And then people from the consulate went up there and cut her down.
How long a fall to the balcony would you say that was? 15 feet or so? (Note the absence of the flagpoles in this later photo – those poles got nubbed shortly after the rope cutting incident.)
And then the SFFD couldn’t get into the building to rescue her to take her to SFGH because, because, well, the People’s Republic of China.
First it was free and then it cost $1 at newsstands.
But that didn’t work out, obliviously.
So this is the latest tack – a price reduction:

“Most of the paper’s editorial staff are still Chinese, whose English reports are ‘polished’ by a small group of expatriate editors employed on short-term contracts.”
Oh, I see.
Carry on then.
How the Falun Gong Defeated Google – The Shen Yun 2013 “Extravaganza” Plays San Francisco’s Orpheum TheatreThursday, March 21st, 2013
All right, let’s say you’ve heard about the big Shen Yun 2013 show at our Orpheum Theatre and you want to find out a little about it, m’kay?
So you type into Google and this what you get:
What you won’t get is something like this:
Or Yelp reviews neither, like these:
And you certainly won’t find the official Chinese Communist Party (“Socialism, with Chinese Characteristics!”) website on Shen Yun all that easily, oh no:
Cult Studies [Uh, FYI, CCP, your agitprop website looks a little crude, like it’s from your little buddy North Korea, just saying.]
So I guess the lesson to be learned is that if a small group of people wants to game Google so that you’ll buy tickets to this show without knowing, in a general way, what it’s about first, then they can.
Things I now know:
SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE;
THE BOLD ITALIC IS GANNETT COMPANY, INCORPORATED; and
SHEN YUN 2013 IS FALUN GONG
That’s something to consider when you’re getting the hard sell at San Francisco Costco #144, as seen last week on 10th Street:
San Francisco has Neighborhood Courts? News to me.
Anyway, if you go down to Chinatown, I don’t know, maybe around Grant Ave. and Washington, and you start punching the Falun types, well, you just end up in Community Court and then be forced to write insincere apology notes, and to attend Anger Management courses, and to keep away from Grant Ave. and Washington.
So says the house organ for area Falun Gong, the Epoch Times Newspaper.
“Yongyao Wu (right) assaults Falun Gong practitioner Derek Wang in San Francisco’s Chinatown on June 10. Wu was found guilty by a Neighborhood Court on Aug. 13. (Courtesy of anonymous bystander)”

So, I sort of knew about this sitch, but I didn’t know how things turned out.
