The San Francisco Film Society will present a special preview screening of Edward Burns’s new independent feature Nice Guy Johnny and Hollywood 2.0, Burns’s master class on his latest film, emerging technology and trends in independent filmmaking and distribution, ThursdayNovember 4 at the Roxie Theater.

The class will cover all aspects of the independent film value chain, with special emphasis on financing and distribution. Sunil Rajaraman from Scripped.com will facilitate this discussion-style class with Edward Burns (The Brothers McMullen, SFIFF 1995; She’s the OneSidewalks of New York, SFIFF 2001).

The San Francisco Film Society Wants to “Save the Clay Theatre,” For Itself

Well, it turns out that the San Francisco Film Society has a plan to Save the Clay Theatre. And why not?

Back in the day, they tried to take over the moribund Presidio Main Post Theatre (the one in the Presidio and not that other Presidio Theatre), but that didn’t work out. Or rather, it hasn’t yet worked out.

DEAR CLAY THEATER SUPPORTER:

The San Francisco Film Society is one of the top twenty organizations of its kind in the world, one of the top ten in the United States, and oldest, biggest and most widely respected film exhibition organization in Northern California. Since 1957, the Film Society has been enriching the lives of Bay Area residents by presenting the best film and media from around the world, notably via the acclaimed San Francisco International Film Festival. The longest-running festival in the Americas, the International celebrated its golden anniversary in April 2007. During its first half-century, the Film Society has hosted more than 2,000 filmmakers and presented more than 6,500 films from 124 countries to audiences numbering more than two million people. It is beloved by its audiences and the international film industry alike. Its contributions to the cultural life of the Bay Area are immeasurable.

Now, as the Film Society begins its 54th year of operation, it is looking ahead to an even brighter future. In recent years the organization has launched many new activities, resulting in significant increases in membership, attendance, sponsorship and earned income. Its numbers are up across the board, in fact, and it is well on its way to establishing itself as a major cultural institution with a vibrant year-round presence. Central to this mission is the acquisition of a theater that the Film Society can call its home, one in which it can present many types of year-round programming in the areas of film exhibition, education, and filmmaker services.

Since December 2009, the Film Society has been in negotiations with the landlord of the Clay Theater, in an attempt to lease or purchase the building. So far these talks are at  an impasse over terms, but ultimately the Film Society hopes to bring the negotiations to a successful and swift conclusion, resulting in a longterm lease or ownership of the Clay. Once the Film Society has the theater, it intends to significantly upgrade the physical plant, which needs a good number of improvements, and reopen it as a revitalized cultural and community hub for the thriving Upper Fillmore business district.

With a half-century of film-exhibition experience under its belt, there is no doubt that the Film Society can make a success of running the Clay. The organization will program the same eclectic and popular mix of international, independent, and documentary films that have so engaged its diverse audiences. It will also program “Landmark”-type films, meaning first-run arthouse hits, as they become available, and will present a number of mini-festivals devoted to individual filmmakers and national cinemas. In all cases the Film Society will add value to these screenings, with panels, talks, and filmmakers in attendance.

So, we urge you, as someone who attends the Clay Theater, appreciates its role in your cultural life, and wants it to continue showing great films in our neighborhood, to ask the landlord to resume negotiations with the Film Society, to come to terms with the realities of today’s recessionary marketplace and real-estate values, and make it possible for the Film Society to operate and bring renewed energy to our beloved Clay Theater.

53rd Annual San Francisco International Film Festival – Full Lineup Announced Today

This year’s San Francisco International Film Festival will show 177 films from April 22 to May 6, 2010 - it promises variety and substance. Today’s news:

1. “Opening Night begins at 7:00 pm at the historic Castro Theatre, where the curtain rises on Micmacs (France), the latest whimsical creation from the endlessly inventive director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen, Amélie and City of Lost Children). A man who lost his father to a landmine and has a bullet lodged in his own skull seeks revenge against weapons manufacturers, enlisting an eccentric gang of junk dealers into his wacky scheme. After the screening, the Opening Night party kicks off at 9:30 pm in the historic Regency Center, where partygoers can explore two levels of Edwardian splendor while enjoying refreshing cocktails, international culinary delights and to live music.

Mark your calendars now, ’cause Pulitzer Prize­-winning film critic Roger Ebert is coming to town during the 2010 San Francisco International Film Festival (April 22 – May 6). 

Roger will be honored at An Evening with Roger Ebert and Friends on May 1st  at the Castro Theatre.

Get your tickets soon – this one will sell out despite the massiveness of the single-screen Castro.

Pulitzer Prize­-Winning Film Critic to Be Honored at An Evening with Roger Ebert and Friends May 1 at Castro Theatre

San Francisco, CA — Roger Ebert will receive the Mel Novikoff Award at the 53rd San Francisco International Film Festival (April 22 – May 6). The award, named for the pioneering San Francisco art and repertory film exhibitor Mel Novikoff (1922-87), acknowledges an individual or institution whose work has enhanced the filmgoing public’s knowledge and appreciation of world cinema. The Novikoff Award will be presented at An Evening with Roger Ebert and Friends, Saturday, May 1 at 5:30 pm at the Castro Theatre. Confirmed guests to date include directors Jason Reitman and Terry Zwigoff, with others to be announced soon.

Area Billionaire William R. Hearst III Funds Screenwriting Grant

Hey, are you a “mid-career screenwriter“? (That’s an artful term, huh?) Anyway, you simply must apply for the Hearst Screenwriting Grant, a new joint from the San Francisco Film Society and William R. Hearst III, San Francisco’s favorite billionaire.

(You’re thinking maybe you could take a stab at a remake of Citizen Kane, tell it from Charles Foster’s point of view or something. It’d be a lock, but sadly, adaptations aren’t allowed.)

$15,000 Grant Will Be Given to Foster a Screenwriting Career San Francisco, CA

The San Francisco Film Society announced today an exciting new partnership with William R. Hearst III that will launch the second SFFS screenwriting initiative, the newest element of the Film Society’s rapidly expanding Filmmaker Services program. The Hearst Screenwriting Grant of $15,000 will be given to a mid-career screenwriter who has been a practicing writer for at least five years and who has previously written a minimum of one feature screenplay.

The grant is open to writers residing in the United States whose project expresses both a unique personal perspective and an artistic approach to the subject. Priority will be given to writers whose previous short or feature screenplays have been produced as an independent film. This grant is supported by a gift from William R. Hearst III. The letter of inquiry period for the Hearst Screenwriting Grant opens July 22 and closes August 26. For more information: sffs.org/filmmaker-services/grants-and-prizes.

The Djerassi Residency Award/San Francisco Film Society Screenwriting Fellowship, a one month residency for an emerging or established screenwriter at the Djerassi Residents Artist Program, was announced earlier this month.

Other SFFS screenwriting initiatives in the early planning stages include a screenwriters’ colony at SFFS FilmHouse, script readings with local actors and theater companies, script editing consultations and networking events to connect writers with producers. San Francisco Film Society is a nonprofit arts organization dedicated to celebrating film and the moving image in all its glorious forms. SFFS year-round programs and events are concentrated in four core areas: Celebrating Internationalism, Inspiring Bay Area Youth, Showcasing Bay Area Film Culture and Exploring New Digital Media.

Nimbies Save Presidio’s Great Northern Parking Lot – Will Burger King Now Come Back?

Boy, it was touch and go for a few years there, but news comes today that our beloved NIMBYs have managed to preserve the Great Northern Parking Lot of San Francisco.

See it? 700 spaces, free of charge. It’s historic, you know. When the U.S. Army wasn’t out there killing a million or so Filipinos it managed to create the GNPLoSF. Therefore, these parking spaces are sacrosanct:

Now that that pesky modern art has been gotten rid of, a question remains over what to do with the upper end of the Main Post. You know the Burger King corporation had an outlet that served as an Army Mess on the Presidio for so many years, it would be only fitting to give it the right of first refusal to get a chance to replace the famous itty bitty bowling alley that’s up there now.

You see, that old, historic Presidio BK was a place “where a simple guy serving his country could get an inexpensive meal with a stunning view.” Wouldn’t it be nice to honor those memories with the biggest Burger King in the world? Put it right where the museum was supposed to go.

Either that, or a Jollibee. Your choice.

Presidio Update: Two More Open Houses Announced – Public Comment Ends June 1

Your Presidio Trust has just announced another two Open House sessions concerning the Main Post. Make note of the location at Building 105, that Brokedown Palace (but I can assure you that parts of it are excellent). It’s sandwiched between Lincoln (no, not THAT Lincoln), Taylor (no, not THAT Taylor) and Montgomery (no, not THAT Montgomery). Just pop open the Google Map here. See? It’s right near where the Google Maps car got busted (or not, if you believe a certain U.S. Park Police Sargeant, who, really, oughta know).

Just get to the Building 104 Mouse House and then go downhill a skosh. There’s probably not going to be a program or anything – just drop by and yickety yack a bit…

Mercedes-Driving NIMBYs Pack Presidio Trust Transportation Workshop

As promised, the Presidio Trust Main Post Planning Transportation Workshop went off on April 22, 2009. Look here later on to see when and if two more similar meetings will occur in the very merry month of May. (The first should deal with historic resources and the other is slated to be a kind of catch-all open-mike night.) 

122 souls sat through a presentation of answers to a dozen key questions that people have been asking about concerning transportation – signalization, fees for parking, traffic loads, etc. I vowed to leave as soon as the public speakers veered off-topic – that took about ten seconds, so oh well. Regardless, this appeared to be a more-productive-than-average public yammer session. Assemblymember Tom Ammiano sent a representative (the well-informed Noriko Shinzato) as did Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier, so it appears that interest in the plans for the Main Post remains strong.

Fully eleven Mercedes-Benzeses were out front, or in the lot up the hill, or in the overflow lot even further up the hill near the chapel. BMW was also well-repped, and there were a least three Porsches, including two expensive Porsche Cayenne minivans and one hepped-up Neunelfer.A richer group of parking-hungry NIMBYs would be hard to find. One bicycle.

All this Powerpoint stuff should be online in the near future, or maybe it already is.

Presidi-Go is already up to 300,000 trips per year.

Should the NIMBY’s, the people of means, be given more votes on this matter than tourists from Tempe? Only Time Will Tell.

Presidio Update: Main Post Planning Transportation Workshop Set for April 22nd

The Presidio Trust has replaced the cancelled April 16 meeting with a Transportation Workshop at 6:30 PM on April 22, 2009. There will be an overview of the transit issues being analyzed through the Main Post planning process, and staff will be on hand to answer questions about transportation issues.
