Lone Skateboarder Takes on the Financh, Rather Adroitly

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

Man, I’ve seen tons of fixie bike riders run red lights and fall down and whatnot when faced with a traffic light at the bottom of a steep hill.

But skateboarders, well, the good ones just put a foot down (or pop a wheelie) like it ain’t no thang.

ZOMG, It’s BritWeek 2011 in San Francisco! A Fortnight of British-California Events Runs Through May 12th

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Well it’s here, it’s BritWeek in the 415:

BritWeek 2011 will run from April 26th to May 11th in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, and until May 12th in San Francisco. As usual, it will highlight the many British links with California, including art and design, literature, music, film and television, technology, business, sport, food and fashion. The program ranges from star-studded red carpet events, to concerts and exhibits, to conferences and symposiums.”

OK then.

Now it just so happens that the British are having a royal wedding during this Fifth Annual BritWeek. So why don’t you be a sport and head over to 1 Sansome #850 in the Financh and sign the royal wedding book? You can use the elocution what you learned by watching The King’s Speech:

“HRH Prince William of Wales and Miss Catherine Middleton will be married on 29 April 2011, at Westminster Abbey in London. The British Consulate General in San Francisco will be celebrating by engaging the Bay Area community in all of the excitement. The following activities are planned: ~A royal guest book will be available at the Consulate for the public to sign from April 26-28th (9am-4pm)…”

This is exactly what it’ll look like when you’re penning your best wishes:

Why Is It That The Only Set of Gas Pumps in the Financh are INSIDE a McDonalds on Market Street?

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

It’s a mystery.

Mind you, this is inside the store at 575 Market Street. The cash registers are just to the left.

And the woman camera right is noshing on a McDouble or something:

And there’s another McDonalds a stone’s throw away up the street at 609 Market? That’s just 34 away from 575 Market. Kind of close, huh?

It’s another mystery…

[All right, Commenter One sort of has the answer, and it's one that I already sort of knew (although I didn't make a connection with the addresses) but it doesn't tell the whole story. Somebody out there on this Great Blue Marble thought it was a capital idea to do honor a gas station inside a Micky D's, but I don't who, don't know when...]

San Francisco Enjoyed a Day Without Wind Last Saturday, October 24th, 2009

Monday, October 26th, 2009

It’s rare to be able to look up at the American flags atop the 345 California Building in the Financh and see that they’re hanging listlessly. Verily, October 24th, 2009 was San Francisco’s Day Without Wind.

See? Click to expand:

And this held true all the way to the evening hours way up at Twin Peaks, where people could enjoy the view without risk of hypothermia.

But, be warned. The winds will return with a quickness soon.

Oh well.

The Embarcadero Chevys Closed Down Last Week Because Its Lease Expired? Really?

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Well it was quite a mystery last week when, via Eater SF’s The Shutter, we all learned that the Chevy’s Fresh Mex at 2 Embarcadero Center in the Financh would close down forever as of last Friday. Per ABC KGO TV Channel 7, the employees were bummed because they only got three days’ notice of the closure - and as for any severance benefits, well that’s a big fat nada.

Why did this eatery close down without warning? Well, the manager (and management in general) didn’t want to say. But now, we have a statement from Chevy’s. See?

Their “lease expired.” Simple, right?

But that seems a little funny. (Of course, I’m not in the restaurant biz so I don’t know.) You’d think they’d have been able to give the workers more notice if this was just a matter of losing a lease.

(And you know, actually, I’d imagine that Boston Properties (or whomever you talk to when you want to strike a bargain on cheaper rent at Embarcadero Center) would be looking to make a sweet deal, based upon the low level of occupancy they have these days…)

Maybe Chevys’ management figured they’d be closing this store a month or two ago, but they kept this info a secret from the workers?

(When Warren Simmons, Sr. and his son Warren “Scooter” Simmons, Jr. started up the first Chevys (no apostrophe, please) in Alameda back in 1987, did they think that this was they way it was going to be? Oh well.)

Mmmmm……

Best-O-Burger in San Francisco’s Financial District – Meh

Friday, May 30th, 2008

San Francisco’s latest lunchtime hotspot in the Financh is doing land-office business so far, but the reviews are sort of meh.

Per Sue L.:

Burgers – reminiscent of White Castle
Fries – reminiscent of Burger King
Onion Strings – reminiscent of Asqew Grill
Hype – reminiscent of In & Out

It looks like a chain, but it’s not. People line up out the door during lunchtime, but it’s not that long a wait. The burgers, fries and onion ring string things taste good. A little pricey for what you get.

Maybe it’s for you, maybe it’s not.
