I think things were a lot more wholesome at the Pacific Stock Exchange Building when it was the Pacific Stock Exchange. You know, back when Kevin Bacon filmed that Quicksilver bike messenger movie in 1986 before you were born. It went a little like this, with KB acting as a besuited yuppie stock broker at the PSE at Pine and Sansome.

You see, back then, everybody wore clothes and open outcry was the order of the day.

O.K., so skip down below to see the ad from Target / Converse Shoes that caused a stir a while back. You know, over the whole “IF YOU”RE NOT THE MODEL, BE THE PHOTOGRAPHER” thing.

So I was thinking the photographer gal shown might actually have been a photographer who became a model for the first time because somebody took a photo of her OTJ photographing models.

And then I just saw this link here from Erin Williams talking about “the ad that I shot for Converse,” so I thought, yeah, she is a photographer IRL:

“My mom told me about this blog post that someone saw online in regards to the ad that I shot for Converse for Target. The tagline in the ad is “If you can’t be the model, be the photographer”.  I guess not everyone liked the line…  What do you think?”

But then one more click to one of the galleries on her website reveals she’s a model model:

(Because, of course, “the ad that I shot for Converse” can mean different things depending on whether you’re a model or a photographer.)

So, as stated, mystery solved.

Hurray!

Magazines to Advertise the Greatness of Magazines: “The Power of Print” Campaign

Magazines suck these days, right kids? Oh, wait a sec, maybe not. That’s the message coming out of the “4A’s [AAAA, the American Association of Advertising Agencies] Leadership / Media Conference that kicked off yesterday at the San Francisco Hilton Union Square. Check it:

“The leaders of five major magazine companiesCharles H. Townsend, Condé Nast; Cathie Black, Hearst Magazines; Jack Griffin, Meredith Corporation; Ann Moore, Time Inc.; and Jann Wenner, Wenner Media—today jointly announced the launch of one of the largest print advertising campaigns ever created to promote the vitality of magazines as a medium.”

O.K. then. Here’s the campaign logo – how many fonts from different mags do you recognize? Hint: “Es” is from Esquire (but even I knew that. I got the “M” and the “g” right as well, but everything else…)

Y&R NY made a clever graphic, I’ll give you that. But whenever you hear a Betty harshing on a Veronica, you start to think that the Betty is playing a losing game. For example, how bon are these mots?

“We Surf the Internet. We Swim in Magazines.”

“Will the Internet Kill Magazines? Did Instant Coffee Kill Coffee?”

Oh well. Look forward to seeing this ad in a few months:

Midnight Pugilistics at the Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco

This is the scene in Golden Gate Park just outside the lovely Conservatory of Flowers, where a fitness team jumps rope and spars with boxing gloves, just like Rocky Balboa or something.

Are these the people who do sidewalk bowling pushups? Are they training to get into shape enough to consider applying for Hummer-equipped Hit the Hill with Jim Diruscio?
