Formation Flying: 56 Years After The Day The Music Died, Two Beech Bonanzas Buzz SF – Like a G[3]6, Like a G[3]6

Friday, February 20th, 2015

(Your choice – you can play Like a G6 or American Pie* as you look at photos of these Beechcraft Bonanza G36’s.)

This was the scene yesterday over Market Street. I ain’t never seen this:

What’s this, a joyride? Or is somebody making a video? I don’t get it. This is like the General Aviation version of the Blue Angels.

I’ll just say that this is dangerous flying.

Gee, if I could only get an N-number as this formation circles over South of Market, the Twitterloin, the Western Addition, etc. My aging Canon prolly shouldn’t have been set at ISO 25600 and this pair was a little too far away from my 200mm lens as they flew in and out of the fog, oh well:

Oh, I know, how about N301RB for a registration number? Hello Brent Wolfe of Phoenix, Arizona.

Welcome to Frisco.

*Yeah, the $70 million Gulfstream G650 was supposed to be called the G6, hence the song title. But it turned out that the name G6 was only actually applied to a kind of Pontiac, which was a car line, back in the day. Speaking of history, Buddy Holly died in a V-tail** Bonanza back in 1959.

**Yeah, 60 Minutes made a big deal about the differences betwixt the accident rate of V-tailed versus straight-tailed Bonanzas, but most of the deaths had to do with inexperienced pilots flying into known bad weather. Another factor was that v-tailed Bonanzas certainly look bad-ass – they have a strong “ramp appeal,” so they attracted the wrong element, you know, people like Steve Wozniak, people who are successful in the non-flying realm. “Forked Tail Doctor Killer” is the phrase that covers this phenomenon. The next step up in status would be a Piper Saratoga or something, or, Heaven forbid, a twin-engined aircraft, and that’s when you know you’re a baller…

Iconic Sign Design: “BAY AREA BIRD HOSPITAL” on Taraval – Surely a Future Museum Piece

Thursday, December 4th, 2014

A bit of color in the cold, foggy Parkside District:

(They have another sign that shows a giant parrot / parakeet atop the Golden Gate Bridge, but it’s less iconic ‘n stuff.)

I don’t know how old these signs are, but they probably precede the era of escaped pet parrots going feral and flying about The Avenues in huge flocks. Check it, the Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill are now all over the place, like here, in the cold, foggy Sunset District, around Noriega, just a few blocks north of the cold, foggy Parkside:

They might look like hated pigeons from a distance, but their loud squawking gives them away every time. It’s still amazing to me to see these birds flying about the 415:

That would be a Star of David atop a Honda Goldwing, aka the “Japanese Harley-Davidson,” sort of.

Oh No, Our “Local” Gannett Blog, The Bold Italic, STILL Doesn’t Know That the Fake Video It Posted is Fake

Tuesday, February 25th, 2014

Well here we go, some people took the effort to point out to our “local” Gannett Co Inc blog about one of its many mistakes. And it wasn’t just me, you know, right here: Gull-ible! – Gannett Co Inc’s West Coast Blog Gets Around to Posting a Two-Year Old Video – Oh, But It’s Not a Real Video.

So, Gannett, the charge is that your fake video is fake.

The rejoinder:

Was it?

YES IT WAS.

I mean, it very well may have been

WELL, IF THIS IS YOUR POSITION, THEN WHY NOT JUST SAY “FAKE THIEF-SEAGULL STEALS A GOPRO” INSTEAD?

but we just found people speculating that it was,

OH, IT’S UP TO THE GREATER PUBLIC TO PROVE YOU WRONG AS OPPOSED TO THE OPPOSITE? OK FINE.

and GoPro says they had nothing to do with it. (Though, they could be LYING, or seagulls themselves…)

UH-OH, YOU’RE MISSING THE CASE WHERE GOPRO ISN’T LYING AND SOMEBODY _OUTSIDE_ OF GOPRO PRODUCED THIS FAKE VIDEO, RIGHT?

All right, let’s play along. Do you really think a seagull can pick up a video camera with its webbed feet? If so, you’re naive.

And why do the seabirds of the world only pickup GoPro brand cameras and not Canons or Nikons or Sony Action Cams and whathaveyou?

And what French tourist takes an ordinary sunset video with a monitor-free GoPro in a waterproof case? Not that many, I’ll tell you.

And what of Nathalie Rollandin, what business was she in when she posted that video, only one, of course, the only she’s ever posted on YouTube? Let’s take a look:

Marketing strategy and product launch: concept development and product design, pricing and promotional strategies, training, launch and monitoring of results”

The French tourist turned out to be an Italian-American chick from Chicago. She’s now learning even more about viral marketing ‘n stuff at the Kellogg School. Mmmm

All right, here’s my contribution to the marketing intern fake video oeuvre.

Enjoy:

Actually, mine’s twice as good as yours, because mine has two marketing interns faking a video.

Hey Gannett! What’s your burn rate? Why don’t you move back to Virginia and make room for housing at your reclaimed wood clubhouse on Page? How many millions have you lost so far, The Bold italic, you know, since you all came to town?

Here’s the video, which was ID’ed as a fake about 2.6 million views ago:

And here’s the recent post from the money-losing Gannet blog, The Bold Italic.

Do you really want to know how to do better, TBI? Well, don’t post crap like this, for starters.

Blackhawk Up: Special Forces Flying Low Over the 101

Thursday, February 6th, 2014

Man, these things were low and loud over the freeway.

I’m thinking this is something in the Sikorsky MH-60K or L or M part of the alphabet, owing to the refueling probe, but it’s very possible that Wiki isn’t up-to-date on this topic:
