Twitterloin Update: Adieu Big Boy Market – More Uncritical Source Greasing from CW Nevius – La Muerte del Niño GrandeTuesday, March 10th, 2015
Here’s a statement about the northern Twitterloin from CW Nevius in“Tenderloin nonprofits vs. bad apple corner stores:
“He hired a security guard and installed lights and cameras, but he and the people at the neighborhood’s other service agencies know where the real problems originate — the handful of lawless corner stores.
So, the “real problems” of the Tenderloin originate from a handful of lawless corner stores?
The test will be when the handful of corner stores get shut down and then the New Day doesn’t dawn, of course.
(One supposes that Nevius needs to “add drama” in order to justify his high-salary, low-effort gig.)
Now obvs, if SFGov is sufficiently motivated, it can “dramatically” change the character of a high-crime corner or a block pretty much at will. (Like at Jones and Market, the former open-air, stolen iPhone Apple store in front of the check-cashing place. Post an officer not just for one shift, but for all shifts and then people will get the message to move on.) But I’m skeptical of SFGov doing much more than that, of it “bringing a new day” to the TL. I heard the same type of thing when I lived in the area, back before Nevius white-flighted to The Creek in the East Bay, and periodically I keep hearing the same-old-same-old from some of the bad apple service agencies that Nevius is in communication with. (You know, like the one with the chief exec who sometimes threatens to sue and almost always belittles The Neviusese’s employer, for instance.)
Naive newcomer Nevius is far more optimistic than I on this score.
In any event, if SFGov can shut down an individual store and CW Nevius wants to cheerlead from his empty nest condo in SoSoMA, that’s fine. But it’ll be a long wait for a “new day” in the TL.
Background: The Big Boy Market at 180 Golden Gate is no more as of 2014.
And here’s a shot I took, from 2011 – it seemed to piss off the people hanging about. (Everything’s filtered ‘cept for the DRUG-FREE SCHOOL ZONE (or should it have been SCHOOL-FREE DRUG ZONE?) sign:

Hey Nevius, why don’t you spend a Night in the Twitterloin ala this guy? You know, have a hat cam on, or have a drone hovering overhead to record your interactions. Or, just keep on doing the same old, waiting for Randy Shaw to email you with his latest Crusade, that kind of thing. I suppose you get paid the same either way…
Well, it happens a lot ’round here
And if you think peace is a common goal
That goes to show how little you know
Well, I’d rather not get involved
I never talk to my neighbor
I’d rather not get involved
Love, peace and harmony?
Oh, very nice, very nice, very nice, very nice
But maybe in the next world
The sign that you can see in front of the Big Boy Market (aka Niño Grande with the “e” in a different font, showing that it was forgotten about, initially) indicates the former, but my eyes, after witnessing zero schools and mad drug dealers shouting, “Five-oh, five-oh,” well my eyes say the latter.
But why don’t you drop by to say hi and then judge for yourself. After all, this part of the unreconstructed Uptown Tenderloin Crime District is rated a perfect 100 by Walk Score. It’s a Walker’s Paradise, they say. (But IRL, it’s not – you should totally stay out this part of the TL, IMO.)

[UPDATE: Just discovered that Mr. Greg Dewar posted about this very issue yesterday.]
Well of course the 17 photos used for this standard one-minute commercial on YouTube were PhotoShopped – I mean they’re all black-and-white, so most likely they were converted from color using Adobe’s awesome B&W converter, or something similar. Fine, lots of contrast there, so they look good. But what about the sign that says “Constitutional Convention!” that appears at around :27?

Look at Gallagher over there on the right, dude wearing the natty cap. He has two signs? What’s holding up his “Constitutional Convention!” sign? Would you hold two signs like that? Is the higher sign glued to his fingers or something? Why is Our Mayor in focus, along with the sign, but nothing else? Does Gallagher’s left thumb go through the lower sign?
Here’s a close-up view. Like, why is the lower right corner of the higher sign in sharp focus when the lower sign appears to be out of focus?
Now, if the person making this video spot diduse Photoshop and maybe made up a sign to fit the commercial, then s/he would have most likely have used the Horizontal Type Tool. Now isn’t it funny that some of the more recent versions of PhotoShop (like CS2 and CS3) use Myriad (out of scores of options), as the default font and Myriad is the very same font as in the sign?
Rather interesting, non? (And by the way, Dan, that Plastic Planes bit you had a couple years back about the “unsafe” composite Boeing 787 Dreamliner? You’re totally wrong on that one.) Anyway, my PS defaults to Myriad Pro, so this is what you get when you start typing away and then center the result:
I don’t know, maybe it’s a real sign that just happened to be created with Photoshop – that would go a long way to explaining part of the mystery.
But, as always, You Make The Call.
