Here’s why:
Seule Paris est digne de Rome; seule Rome est digne de Paris.
Solo Parigi è degna di Roma; solo Roma è degna di Parigi.
Only Paris is worthy of Rome; only Rome is worthy of Paris.
That means that Paris has been “twinned” with Rome in an exclusive sister-city relationship. It’s an “elaborate cultural partnership,” as they say.
So does that mean that Mayor Ed Lie will be lying once again today?
Yep, pretty much.
But you’ve got to realize that things are more or less on autopilot at City Hall these days, so it’s not really his volition.
(And if Willie Brown could get away with something, then Ed Lee should be able to as well, else it’s racist or something.)
Now, here’s what we really have with the City of Light. We have one of these things:
“Les pactes d’amitié et de coopération signés par la Ville de Paris“
Which in American is “pacts of friendship and cooperation signed by the City of Paris.”
Which, IRL, is rien de bien grave (no biggee). See Below.
IMO, we should be like Dubai, which ID’s itself as a Partner City with Paris.
All right, TTFN. But remember, We’ll Always Never Have Paris.
IRL, Paris, France is friends with just about everybody. The list of partner cities:

And in other news, George P. Shultz was a Nixon and Reagan appointee, not a Carter appointee. (You’d be amazed how many people think (or say) he’s a Carter appointee.)
Anywho, ever more deets, including a visit to Le Twitter HQ in the corrupt Twitterloin:
“From September 25 to 28, the mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë, is visiting San Francisco to strengthen ties and cooperation between the two cities.
The mayor of Paris has a full agenda for his stay in California. After a welcome reception at the Consulate of France in San Francisco, he visited two companies Parisoma and Twitter. 27 in the morning, he will go to Parisoma a common workspace, exchange and support for entrepreneurs. Created by the French Stéphane Distinguin, Parisoma accompanied nearly 300 start-up since its inception in 2007.
Bertrand Delanoë must also discover the new headquarters of Twitter in the SoMa district, the famous social network of micro-blogging, along with its CEO Jack Dorsey. With New York, Paris is the city with the most subscribers to his Twitter account, and this year the City of Light became the first in the world to exhibit his tweets in the public space, the place Châtelet.
Paris delegation has always aimed to encourage more trade with San Francisco, mainly on economic and technological. Several meetings with the mayor of this city, Edwin Lee, are well planned and Bertrand Delanoë is expected to sign a memorandum with him, in line with those of 2006 and 2009 to facilitate cooperation. This will be an opportunity to discuss joint projects twinned towns and to consider connections between the research teams.”

I’ll tell you, when I first saw these ugly flying buttresses holding up St. Dominic’s Church at 2390 Bush, I thought they were remedial, you know, like an add-on to a building in danger of falling down.
Then later on I saw images of other old-school buildings what had flying buttresses as original equipment, so then I thought, no, I was wrong, that’s just how this massive building on Bush was constructed.
But just today, I discovered that the nine concrete buttresses holding up St Dom’s are, in fact, add-ons, from back in the 1990′s, after the Loma Prieta. (Thanks, Wiki. You’re so smart!)
I still think that these things are seriously ugly, oh well.
But check it, the church has a five star average from 44 Yelpers, so this congregation must be doing something right, huh?

Cole Valley’s favorite brunch spot is open for dinner, don’t you know. Let’s take a peek.
On a late Sunday night, you can just walk right in to get a bite. That’s quite different than the crowds you’ll see on a tweekend morning.
Zazie at closing time:

O.K., let’s get rustic. Mussels Marinieres- white wine, garlic, shallots, parsley, cream $11 – this is the half-sized prix-fixe version:

I don’t know, it seems like writer William Langewiesche, currently residing in France, wants to have it both ways with his new book, Fly by Wire: The Geese, the Glide, the Miracle on the Hudson. He wants to rip on Sully, thusly:
“His performance was a work of extraordinary concentration, which the public misread as coolness under fire. Some soldiers will recognize the distinction.”
“Like it or not, [French pilot Bernard Ziegler] reached out across the years and cradled them all the way to the water.”
But then when Langewiesche gets a little blowback, he folds up like a deck chair, talking about how he’s surprised by Sully’s reaction, and how he’s neither pro- nor anti- fly-by-wire, and how he thinks cockpit automation is merely ”a part of the story,” anyway, of Flight 1549. Well, duh, it’s a part of the story.
But that’s Langewiesche’s “Truth About the Miracle on the Hudson” – that’s it, that’s all there is?
Haven’t read Fly by Wire myself. Probably would rather read it more than Sully’s less-techy book (mostly about the his Search for What Really Matters), which I haven’t read either. Oh well.

Obviously, there are pros and cons to Die by Wire. If William Langewiesche is now going around saying that, as he is, then there’s not much of a dispute anymore, we’ll take solace in the certainly that the bruised egos of French Airbus execs (who want Sully to thank Gaia for Airbus every chance he gets) will heal over time.
I don’t know, pretty cheesy (fromagey?) Monsieur William Langewiesche.
Pretty cheesy.

Are you all set for Bastille Day in San Francisco? If not, check out 7×7 Magazine for some hasty planification de dernière minute. And see Joe Eskenazi’s take right here.
Or you can keep it simple and just wander over to the “French Quarter” (of one-percent of) San Francisco around Bush Street betwixt Union Square and the Financial District, on tiny streets like Belden Place (home of Plouf, Cafe Bastille, B-44, and le Best-O-Burger), Mark Lane (home of the Bank of Ireland, aka the Irish Bank), and Claude Lane (home of Cafe Claude).
This is what Belden looked like on July 14th last year. Click to expand:

And this is the Mission from this year. Can you see les drapeaux tricolores? Peter Acworth’s Kink.com famously makes pornography at the old San Francisco National Guard Armory and Arsenal, but they’re never too busy to let a holiday go by without hoisting some huge flags for the occasion:

Here are some more deets:
“This party is back on Belden Place, considered a great out of many of San Francisco’s best street parties, this year will be one of the best for sure. Why? Well, the music, of course!!
Come early to get a seat, some wine, your favorite food, and listen to some of SF’s finest dj’s. Audionista will be playing first, probably the best time slot of the day, so make sure you get there by 4pm.
Also featuring Trevor Simpson of Worldtown-energy 92.7fm
Pheeko Dubfunk of Swank SF
Jared F and Nima G of Connected Grooves”

After 798 reviews on Yelp, Brenda’s French Soul Food is still doing land office business at 652 Polk right next to the H&H Laundromat betwixt Eddy and Turk in the gritty Tenderloin.

Couldn’t get in the place myself, but here’s the menu for you to check out. Click to expand.

Not too pricey, anyway.
Join the crowd, why not?

This was the scene on Haight Street the other day – four urban youths inside of one AMC Pacer. This thing was advertised as the “first wide small car,” and maybe it was. Back in the day, certainly, it was wide enough for the Sandwich King. And these days, a Pacer is good enough to get you into the Nor Cal AMC Club.
Perhaps Google could start using these cars to carry their Street View equipment around? Compared to brand-new, bright red hybrid Priuseses, a fleet of old Pacers might attract less attention from John Law.

They loved it in France, for some reason.

Let’s say au revoir to les hipsters de Haight Street. Pretty soon, everybody will have one.

Headrests are for squares of course. Stay safe in your two-ton fishbowl!
