The Return of Foxes to Golden Gate Park

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

After a period of time of no sightings of foxes in Golden Gate Park, it seems that they might be coming back, especially in the western end. They probably are able to travel back and forth to the Presidio and Land’s End fairly easily.

Send in your reports or post them to Twitter, as Thrusty did.

Foxes certainly don’t mind living in and around cities. Near Lincoln Boulevard in the Inner Sunset. Until we get some new photos, these old ones will have to do. Click to expand:

A Recent Fox Sighting in Golden Gate Park?

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Now back in the mid-oughts (yes that’s what were going to call the first decade of this millenium), say 2003-2005 or so, you’d be able to go into Golden Gate Park and see foxes. Red foxes (Vulpes Vulpes). Some employees at the park would even carry around food (like canned cat food) to give out to these hungry-looking critters.

But then they went away, for some reason. Like poison that was put out for varmints (think rats)? Like car accidents? It’s hard to say.

But last night, I saw something that could have been a fox. Or it could have been something else, like a coyote. (Coyotes also seem to have gone out of style in San Francisco’s park system.)

Keep a look out!
