Outside Lands 2010 was the smallest in the short history of OL - the count is pegged at 70-something thousand or 80,000 if you include the fence jumpers and tunnelers.
And five more makes it 80,000:

Here are all the deets from the organizers:
“A special thanks to our gracious partner who has made Outside Lands a reality for the past 3 years: San Francisco Recreation & Park Department. We’d also like to thank the following for their support: Office of the Mayor, San Francisco Police Department, San Francisco Fire Department, San Francisco Entertainment Commission, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority (Muni and Department of Parking & Traffic), all the artists, staff, volunteers, community members and the whole City and County of San Francisco.
Most importantly we would like to thank you, the fan, for the continued support of Outside Lands since the festival’s inception in 2008 and for cementing it as one of the world’s premier music festivals.

I don’t know, if you look at how many people paid to get in two years ago and compare that with the 70-something thousand claimed for 2010 and then factor in the recent price drop for one-day tickets, you might conclude that Outside Lands took in a little less than half the revenue this year compared with 2008.
Just saying.
But it’s nice to know that San Francisco was guaranteed a million dollars or so for renting out the land.

Maybe 2011′s effort will reverse the trend …

Consarn it, I remember all the way back to aught-eight, back when Outside Lands was rocking, baby. This year, I don’t know if it’s worth the effort of figuring out how to sneak in to see the “lackluster lineup” for 2010. Is it possible that this event is now too well-managed, too organized? Or, maybe not having a headliner hurt?
Jimthecritic is critical, anyway:
“I didnt release how much smaller outside lands was gonna be. fewer stages. one whole less area.”
And when they start saying stuff like this after only two years:
“It may not be the greatest Outside Lands lineup ever…”
Well, it’ll make you pine for the Beck, for the Radiohead, technical issues or no. Oh well.

At least both of the Outside Lands windmills windmill – that’s more than what we can say about the real ones in Golden Gate Park…

[UPDATE: Kids, this is an old post by now. Ya gots to check the update for 2011.]
[UPDATE: Some people are now reporting that sneaking in is "pretty much impossible," or that it's possible but that it carries risks like being jailed and having to come up with bail(!) and/or being attacked by German shepherd(!) dogs. See the comments. For example, did any of these people get jailed? And are there really three perimeter fences? I don't know, I saw scores of people sneaking in with no apparent problems. Wuballin, for one, says he's, "sneaking into outside lands for free, 2nd day in a row, that how we do it in the bay."]
I’ll tell you, that eight-foot cyclone fence surrounding the 2010 Outside Lands music festival looks impressive at first, but already there’s evidence of fans going over the wire, under the wire and through the wire.
Here’s the scene at 11:00AM-something, while the bands were warming up.
The Department of Recreation and Parks loses another five bucks:

Is sneaking in a victimless crime, like punching someone in the dark? Oh well.
Anyway, one of the bands was warming up with Here Comes the Sun. That’s apropopriate but a tad on the optimistic side…

One-third of Outside Lands 2009 is finished and the reviews are universally good, more or less.
But what’s up with the water situation? People need to buy water? Srsly? How about air, is there a fee for breathing?

via minusman
At least they’re not charging $4 for a bottle of water, the way it went at the riotous Woodstock 1999.

Meadows Speedway and Lindley were abuzz yesterday in Golden Gate Park due to preparations for the sure-to-be-delightful Outside Lands 2009, which fires up this afternoon. The thriftiest among us will have to deal with a more robust fencing situation, it would appear. Check it:

You’re looking at perimeter chainlink that’s something like 9 feet high, coupled with crowd control fencing that’s a bit shorter.
Which strategy will win out this year – over, through, or under? Only time will tell…
Also new for this year is a huge signage effort:

Hurrah.
Look for the Critical Mass riders to show up ’round about eight-ish. Guaranteed.
Have a great OL09!
And don’t forget to share your stories with the N Judah Chronicles, in real time. baby. Why not?

The people behind the upcoming Outside Lands Music Festival would like you know that you can head on over to Golden Gate Park starting Wednesday to get your tickets without any fees from TicketMonster or anyone else. That’s nice, huh?
“If you haven’t purchased tickets yet, you can buy them without a service charge starting at 12PM on Wednesday, August 26th at the festival box office located at Speedway Meadow at the intersection of JKF and Transverse.”
As it looked last year:

And if you don’t like Tenacious D, then don’t go, right? I mean, cancer happens, you got to deal with it.
And let’s hope the NIMBYs of San Francisco won’t be too upset by all the activity of the young whippersnappers. Would the neighbors of GGP trade one weekend of Outside Lands a year for free admission for all at Strybing Arboretum for an entire year*?
Signs point to YES.

See you there!

The Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival is coming, coming in a big way baby, August 28-30, 2009. It’s going to be mega. So all you NIMBYs out there should start your yammer now, while you still have a chance to affect this Assault on Your Way of Life.
The problem for you NIMBYs this year is the growing awareness that Outside Lands Makes Money for San Francisco. And if your neighbors start thinking that the money earned from Outside Lands subsidizes free admission at Strybing Arboretum / San Francisco Botanical Garden (and dude, many of them are starting to think exactly this way) then you’re going to need to yammer even harder this go-around.
I mean, just look at these punks raising Hell at last year’s OL. Young people enjoying themselves in YOUR park. Can you imagine?

Anywho, here’s your chance to hear about OL09 in the Richmond District at a rare evening meeting of the monthly Richmond District Police Community Relations Forum. Take care on your way there tonight.
When: May 19, 2009 – Tuesday
7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Where: Richmond Recreation Center, 251 18th Avenue, San Francisco
What: Monthly meeting. Discussion regarding the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival which is scheduled for August 28 and 29th in Golden Gate Park.
In reality, Outsides Lands is a go, whether you like it or not, but if you’d like to understand how the Richmond Station cops on 6th Avenue are plannning on handling this large event and all the side-effects of noise and traffic and yada yada, then this is the place for you.
Oh, and speak of the Devil, “Ranger Dave” of Outside Lands has an announcement about the addition of ten more acts to the bill of fare:
“The bison were straight giddy this morning. On an expedition to a remote region of Golden Gate Park, Ranger Dave made contact with ten more artists that had been previously unclassified to Outside Lands. The proof lies in the documentation below.
Conor Oberst & The Mystic Valley Band
Lucinda Williams
The Avett Brothers
Tea Leaf Green*
Zion I*
Bat For Lashes
Groundation*
Los Campesinos!
Darondo with Nino Moschella*
Big Light*
(*species native to the San Francisco Bay Area)
See you there!
