Photos of Our Humpback Whale Season 2017: The Views that You Can Have from the Golden Gate Bridge

Monday, August 7th, 2017

As preschool season begins, whale season ends, for me anyway. But I’ve heard reports from just a few days ago, so you might still be able to see some.

Sometimes you can be on the bridge and see absolutely nothing, even during the middle of an epic season like 2017. But other times, you could see many whales, perhaps a dozen and a half at one time, on both sides of the bridge.

I’ve never seen them “spyglassing” or breeching, but apparently others have from the GGB. Maybe next year for me.

From the west side sidewalk, South (aka PGE) Tower:

And without the scribbling:

You’d also see them near Alcatraz, Angel Island, Horseshoe Bay, and Crissy Field, in addition to the entire part of the Golden Gate on the west side of the bridge.

But the best view is when you’re looking down on them when they are very close to the towers.

WALDO GRADE: Don’t Tell the Skateboarders of Dolores Park that This is What 101 North Looks Like During a Marathon

Monday, July 31st, 2017

This is Marin County down the hill from the Robin Williams / Rainbow / Waldo Tunnel and up the hill from the Golden Gate Bridge during the 2017 San Francisco Marathon:

And here’s how fast you can go on a small hill.

And if you started on the other side of the tunnel, you’d have a mile of downhill skating (before you killed yourself).

Anyway, it’s rare to see such an empty, hilly stretch of freeway in the daytime…

Disobedient WIFE

Tuesday, July 18th, 2017

You see, ’cause you gotta have a bike to go on this side, no jogging allowed, but it’s much easier to jog with the bikes than all the other joggers and tourists clogging up the East Side

Enforcement is lax on the West Side, so bring it on with your skateboards, large dogs and whathaveyou – it’s sort of the honor system here.

And, like I said before, I am surprised that this is allowed as a daily thing (weather permitting):

Fire Boat vs. Humpback: SFFD Slows and Stops to Avoid Striking a Whale Beneath the Golden Gate Bridge

Monday, July 17th, 2017

This was yesterday:

With the whale down again, the San Francisco Fire Department boat then puttered away.

We’ve had a lot of documented whale strikes lately, but this is the most care I’ve seen displayed by a boating crew.

It’s Inevitable that People Will Crash Into Whales on Kite Boards, Sail Boards and Boats – There’s No Whale Vision Zero

Thursday, July 13th, 2017

As seen from the Golden Gate Bridge:

So here’s the deal – you’ve got sail boarders going back and forth from Crissy Field to Horseshoe Cove at the same time you have humpback whales going up and down getting sardines.

This person knows that whales are in this area these days. If you see a whale going down, you can guess that it will pop up again in about the same area in about two minutes.

7J7C6147 copy

So if there’s a collision, this isn’t necessarily running into whales on purpose, which seems to what’s worrying some in Frisco these days.

7J7C6254 copy

Same thing for kite boarders

This here is from Fort Point on a foggy evening:

These sail boaters are more or less hanging out with the whales, going back and forth in a small area between Alcatraz and the GGB:

They’re on their own whale watching tour:

But I didn’t see any whale strikes on this day.

Now, back up to the bridge, this was the last time I was up there. This 40 foot sailboat had just tacked going upwind and then up comes a whale. The boat hit the whale but it was more of a glancing blow. The boaters weren’t aiming for the whale as they couldn’t even see it until after they hit it – it’s just something that happens.

VisionZero is a governmental promise that nobody will ever get injured / killed in transportation accidents in San Francisco from 2024 to eternity. IMO it’s shameful to promote the idea that there’s any kind of chance of this actually occurring IRL – somehow the politics of the situation has people doing this, oh well.

But what about whales? If you want to live in a world without whales getting hit by watercraft, you’d need to ban watercraft from transiting the Golden Gate when the whales are around. That would be Vision Zer whale strikes, I don’t think that’s practical.

The whale above did fine. It floated about for a while and then went back to fishing.

So I don’t know. Let’s be careful out there, but these types of incidents are inevitable when you have so many whales about in the summertime…

How Tourists Get Their Rental Bikes Back to Frisco from Sausalito – Some Might Consider This Cheating – Saving $48 in Ferry Fare

Wednesday, July 12th, 2017

Once you’ve made it to Sausalito, getting back to Fishermans Wharf to return your rental bike can be a chore with all the uphill, right?

And the heavily-subsidized ferry system for some reason would collect a whopping $48 to take this foursome to the Ferry Building, and don’t forget about the long wait sometimes (and I suppose some get turned away at the end of a day).

But if a taxi driver could somehow carry four (4) bikes and four people up the hill and over the bridge, well that would be great. Thusly:

7J7C6308 copy

And there was another taxi doing the same thing just ahead, so I guess this is a thing, I just didn’t think this was possible.

As long as the driver got you to the Toll Plaza of the Golden Gate Bridge, well that would work out great.

Surprising that Flying Under the Golden Gate Bridge is Allowed by the FAA, in This Day and Age

This is how it goes, every day, weather permitting, under our Golden Gate Bridge:

You know, like this:

Or if there’s too much fog up high, I guess they’ll go under from west to east, thusly:

It’s hard to tell, but the pilot is staying in the clear and just under a lot of fog

And then off to wherever:

To repeat, it’s Surprising that Flying Under the Golden Gate Bridge is Allowed by the FAA, in This Day and Age.

You know, safety and whatnot.

It’s Happening Already: NUMEROUS Ford Motor Company GOBIKE Bicycle Rentals Being Ridden to MARIN COUNTY, and Back

Friday, July 7th, 2017

This was the fear of local bike rental companies when they heard that Michigan-based Ford Motor Company and New Yawk-based Motivate International were teaming up with SFGov to spend mid-eight figures(!) to market “FORD” around Frisco.

And then somebody(ies) pulled this switcheroo what would’ve turned the “last mile” 30-minute maximum service of Bay Area Bike Share (BABS) into a three hour tour. A three hour tour, sponsored by FoMoCo.

But then things got reversed and so our tourists still need to fret about checking in within 30 minutes, or they face a financial penalty, a pretty severe one, actually, costing some tourists hundreds of dollars (even after getting the 50% discount what they’ll offer you if you complain enough, from Singapore, Bremen, Timbuktu, after seeing an unexpected charge on their Visa bill.)

No matter – here are some of the brand-new FORD bikes returning from Marin County…

7J7C5919 copy

…heading towards Marin County…

IMG_6025 copy

…and heading towards the Golden Gate Bridge or Fort Point or who knows, but even this dude is straying far away from the intended use zone, non?

IMG_5558 copy

Anyway, I’ve got more shots iffin you want me to dig them up. But I haven’t seen anyone pushing them uphill, which would almost be mandatory for most tourists if they wanted to actually try to make it back to town without relying on a ferry boat.

And of course, this Comes At A Time when our local SFMTA just paid some dude $75 an hour (TCOE) to pen this FU letter to anyone else who would dare compete with our local SFGov-approved Ford Motor Company / Motivate short-term bike rental monopoly.

Do these tourists know how much they’re spending, or are they just confused? IDK.

Frisco Boats vs. Frisco Whales – How Close is Too Close? – “iSailboat” Bears Down on Diving Humpback

Thursday, July 6th, 2017

IDK the answer to this question.

This is prolly the closest I saw the past week or so. A large Beneteau 40 sailboat (named iSailboat, worth what, a couple hundred thou?) east of the Golden Gate Bridge was just seconds away from having its hull or keel hitting this humpback:

7J7C5584 copy

You know, IMO.

Other recent examples:

7J7C5551 copy

Not real sailing here, just puttering around with the whales for a while.

7J7C5558 copy

Anyway, just saying.
