Double Seven: Yesterday’s Blue Angels Show had Twin #7 Jets Performing – Photos from the Toll Plaza Area

Saturday, October 7th, 2017

Being atop an old gun battery just west of the Golden Gate Bridge Toll Plaza isn’t the best place to see the Fleet Week airshow, and it’s not exactly easy to get to, owing to jammed traffic, but it’s where I ended up. Here are some photos from Friday practice day.

Two of things are not like the others/ Two of these thing just don’t belong. Can you see?

That’s right, there are two two-seaters in there. Like this:

And this. There’s no flying required back there, so why not just put your arms out.

7J7C1419 copy

Most are single-seaters:

I’m thinking Aquatic Park or the Marina Green would be better places to be.

Burn: Locally-Owned Blazing Saddles Bike Rental vs. The New Yawk-Based Competition: “$32 per Day vs. $150 per Day”

Wednesday, September 6th, 2017

Here it is:

Of course, Ford Motor Company paid to have these old BABS rides replaced with Ford-branded rolling advertisements, so this hit piece is outdated now. But the Ford / Motivate International people DID try to sneak in a three-hour rental scheme just recently. So yes, these rental bikes are all competitors in a way.

Tourists get confused by terms like “DayPass” and try to ride these hefty bikes all day for “just $10.”

Anyway, it’s hard to make it across the GGB without encountering “bikeshare” rental bikes competing with legacy rental bike businesses

I think legacy bike rental businesses will still be around in 2025, but I don’t know what will happen with “bike share” after the Ford Motor Company contract runs out…

For Some Reason, About 10% of the USAF’s Remaining KC-10 EXTENDER Aerial Refueling Tankers Flew Over the Golden Gate Bridge Yesterday

Monday, August 28th, 2017

One after the other.

Here’s one coming:

And another one over the Golden Gate, this one, #60031:

And another one leaving, passing over the Presidio, last seen heading east:

I saw five myself.

The KC-10 has worked out all right considering the record of its civilian counterparts in the DC-10 / MD-11 family.

The Air Force considered retiring its fleet of KC-10 tankers in response to sequestration budget cuts as part of the service’s FY 2015 budget. A “vertical chop” to divest all KC-10s was suggested because there are fewer KC-10s than KC-135s, having three different tanker models in service (after the introduction of the KC-46) would be costly, and a “horizontal cut” across the refueling fleets would achieve small efficiencies.[20] Some believed retiring the KC-10 would not benefit the Air Force, given that it is equipped with both boom and hose-and-drogue refueling systems and the fleet’s relatively young age.[21] At first, officials claimed that the initial focus on retiring the KC-10 in September 2013 was a “trial balloon” to call attention to Air Force operating cost issues; as of early 2013, the KC-10 had a per hour flying cost of $21,170 and a mission capable rate of 87 percent.[22] A FY 2015 budget plan did not include cuts to the KC-10.[23]

Anyway, I’ve never seen anything like this.

MANSPLAINER: How Tourists Should Get Their Rental Bikes Over The Bridge to Sausalito on Saturday, August 26th, 2017

Thursday, August 24th, 2017

[Mansplaining means giving advice without being asked, is one definition. Apologies.]

Attention Frisco Tourists / Visitors, I’m talking at hundreds and hundreds of you:

You are about to have a big headache, as a great bulk of our Presidio will be closed on Saturday, August 26th. Both of these zones will be bike-free areas.

Captureukhkuh

So here’s what you do. Instead of renting up at Fisherman’s Wharf, rent your ride near the Ferry Building and go down Market, take the Wiggle route to the Panhandle to JFK Drive. Then hang a right at the Rose Garden (feel free to walk your bike north to Fulton or take the unpaved bike route to the right (east) of the garden, then take 14th Ave or whateever, then take a long uphill through that damn golf course, then take Washington to Lincoln Boulevard (not that other Lincoln) and then a left on Merchant and then you are all set up for crossing the Golden Gate Bridge.

Or, go your own way. Ferry Building to Rose Garden to Sausalito. (Oddly enough, Google Maps now recommends the superior McAllister Street route over the vaunted Wiggle, but since the Wiggle is mostly for amateurs anyway, feel free.)

Capturedsddddfghghgt

Or you can take the Geary #38 bus with your bikes placed on the rack on the front of the bus all the way out to 25th Avenue and then bike the rest of the way.

Or you can rely on real-time Google Maps, which very possibly might be live-updated with the no-go zones.

Or you can go to the Ferry Building to take the ferry TO Sausalito. (This could very well be the better option on any day, as there are a lot of tourists who get back to SF this way.) Then you’ll have a laborious ride to climb out of Sausalito on your way back, but once you hit Frisco, it’ll be mostly downhill. I mean, really, you are starting and ending up at sea level, so the amount of effort is about the same.

Or you rent your ride at the Fish Wharf, follow the route to the Marina Green, discover that you are screwed and then maybe look left up that massive hill and start pushing. Divisidero is one option. Then get into the non-closed part of the Presidio to get to the Golden Gate Bridge.

It’ll look like this:

Capturehdfgdfg

Baby, that’s steep, even for Frisco. Some blocks on other streets on this hill have stair steps cut into the sidewalk. And of course, you and your bike should stay off of the Lyon Street Steps, the direct route around the Presidio from the (Old) Mason Street Entrance to the Presidio at Lyon.

Once again, apologies, Gentle Tourists.

Photos of Our Humpback Whale Season 2017: The Views that You Can Have from the Golden Gate Bridge

Monday, August 7th, 2017

As preschool season begins, whale season ends, for me anyway. But I’ve heard reports from just a few days ago, so you might still be able to see some.

Sometimes you can be on the bridge and see absolutely nothing, even during the middle of an epic season like 2017. But other times, you could see many whales, perhaps a dozen and a half at one time, on both sides of the bridge.

I’ve never seen them “spyglassing” or breeching, but apparently others have from the GGB. Maybe next year for me.

From the west side sidewalk, South (aka PGE) Tower:

And without the scribbling:

IMG_5280 copy

You’d also see them near Alcatraz, Angel Island, Horseshoe Bay, and Crissy Field, in addition to the entire part of the Golden Gate on the west side of the bridge.

But the best view is when you’re looking down on them when they are very close to the towers.

WALDO GRADE: Don’t Tell the Skateboarders of Dolores Park that This is What 101 North Looks Like During a Marathon

Monday, July 31st, 2017

This is Marin County down the hill from the Robin Williams / Rainbow / Waldo Tunnel and up the hill from the Golden Gate Bridge during the 2017 San Francisco Marathon:

7J7C6901 copy

And here’s how fast you can go on a small hill.

And if you started on the other side of the tunnel, you’d have a mile of downhill skating (before you killed yourself).

Anyway, it’s rare to see such an empty, hilly stretch of freeway in the daytime…
