PAPER DRIVERS: If You Actually Pay Bridge Tolls Every Day in the Bay Area, You’re a Big Sucker – Presenting FasTrak UBER / Lyft-Style

Wednesday, March 14th, 2018

Gentle Reader, is these UBERs and Lyft cars new?

7J7C0329 copy

No, they is not.

7J7C0383 copy

And that means that they should have real license plates by now, right?

7J7C0391 copy

I think I saw all these cars on the Streets of San Francisco over the course of a few hours. There were more I came across, I’m sure.

But with great plates come great responsibility, meaning that with real metal plates you’ll get busted for not paying bridge tolls, due to license plate scanners.

Now I understand that paper driver is already a phrase, meaning something else, but to me, a paper driver is one who drives across as many local bridges per day as possible over the next year or two afore there’s a chance of actual enforcement starting.

We might get some penalty starting in 2019, but IDK how effective it will be.

Oh well.

Enjoy paying your bridge tolls, suckers, while the UBERs and Lyfts ahead and behind you cross over the bay for free…

ENVY ME! – Oh My, Who has a Better Parking Situation than Our Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District’s EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH?

Wednesday, February 28th, 2018

Whoa, now this is a nice free parking space – it couldn’t possibly be closer to the start of your work day:

7J7C8282 copy

Can’t recall the last time I saw such an old-school RESERVED FOR EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH parking space such as this. I can remember them back in the long long ago, but this is the age of basic Econ 101-style THE HIGH COST OF FREE PARKING, non?  (And I’ll bet at least one part of our GGBTD is very familiar with the concepts underlying that particular book, but obvs, at least one other part of the GGB Family isn’t.)

The Life Aquatic with Bell Shimada – Our Feds Working in SF to Listen to Fish, Quietly – Apparently, “Boaty McBoatface” IS NOT the Winner in Some Vessel Naming Contests

Our NOAAS Bell M. Shimada (R 227) goes under the Golden Gate Bridge yet again:

The Crowded Skies Over the Golden Gate Bridge – Lots of Joyriders Up There – One Of These Days…

Wednesday, February 7th, 2018

The float plane on the left is always up there, like multiple times a day, but the other plane, which is at the same altitude and has the same heading, had to turn away shortly before:

7J7C7837 copy

I guess the last problem we had over / under the bridge aviation-wise was when a chopper lost power and had to inflate its pontoon balloons and auto-rotate onto the waters of the Gate, and then get tow from a Coast Guard boat.

Anyway, we’re a magnet for joyriders is what I’m saying…

Regatta de Blanc: White People + Annual THREE BRIDGE FIASCO = ??? (Also, MOTHERBOY is a Real Thing)

Thursday, February 1st, 2018

(Not to be confused with Reggatta de Blanc, back when Sting did “White Reggae,” and that was the way we liked it!)

No, this was the annual Singlehanded Sailing Society’s Three Bridge Fiasco, which certainly lived up to its name in 2018.

Of course, things started out OK last Sunday. (Can you see the building on the highest point of South East Farallon?)

7J7C7005 copy

But then, look at this:

7J7C6936 copy

It was a total FIRE SALE what needed attention from the Coasties:

7J7C6920 copy

And then I was like, “Please don’t let this be white people, please don’t let this be white people,” and well, you know:

7J7C6951 copy

So you had vessels going backwards under the bridge, going out with the tide. NTTAWWT, but I’m sure our local Bar Pilots aboard massive container ships Straight Outta Pusan didn’t appreciate all this foofarah.

Now look, it’s a tow, from MATER, get it? It’s Sir Tow Mater, KBE?

Aint never seen this –  a sailboat towing a sailboat:

Now this guy got all upset after I started giving him the business with my DJI Mavic Pro Quadcopter Plus II, you know, for like five minutes – geez what a sore loser!

7J7C6934 copy

No no, actually, the shot above is yet another one from the Golden Gate Bridge sidewalk and actually, dude looked totally competent, why not.

And these ppl too, they did fine – I guess they just got caught up with the TBF:

But here’s how things ended, for some:

Oh well.

Anyway, here at the racing results for 2018, with just a 1% completion rate.

Oh, and fans of Arrested Development will be gratified to learn that MOTHERBOY is a real thing, at least it is at the St. Francis Yacht Club. See?

(I came across this when I was trying to find out about the recent fiasco. You’re welcome.)

In closing, you beat me to the punch, yes, it was a “fiasco.” But I am therefore disarmed, if this affair was basically what was intended. And, unlike the America’s Cup, it didn’t cost John and Joan Q Taxpayer eight(!) figures in subsidy. So carry on, Fiascoers, but let’s be careful out there…

Does This Existing Bike Rental Business on City Land Compete with This Other Bike Rental Business Also on City Land?

Tuesday, December 19th, 2017

I think the Ford people (with the new blue FordGoBike rentals in the background) would say no and the legacy mom & pops (with regular blue rental bikes in the foreground) would say yes yes yes:

7J7C3891 copy

Now, you’d think that if legacy bike rental outfits had cared about this, they would have gotten noncompete agreements in their contracts – you know within a certain number of feet, SFGov wouldn’t rent out to competing bike rental businesses. Oh that’s right, they did get noncompete agreements.

And yet, look at the photo above. So all this kind of stuff plus the recent rise of new-school dockless “bikeshare” has led to legal conflicts, burbling ‘neath the surface even right now.

And this comes after local authoritahs have spent EIGHT FIGURES on establishing (now) old-school docked “bikeshare.”

Oh well.

So look forward to reports of at least a partial resolution of these disputes in 2018. (Of course, everybody would admit that there’s at least some overlap in these business models, the question is how much.)

And in the meantime, the Ford people push onward, trying to go nearer to the Fish Wharf (which is a totally obvious place for a bike rental biz to be) and inside the Heart of the Mission (betwixt Hipster Mission and SFGH) and westward, ever westward, maybe even past Masonic – of course doing all these things by now was already baked into the cake. but you know, for the Ford people, mo $ = mo problems, in 2017 anyway.

And speaking of whom, maybe some of them, those making just $16.13 an hour, barely above minimum, will get a raise in 2018. (This is considered “living wages” by some (some people living outside of Frisco,  of course) so that’s what the Ford PR ppl crow about, but actually, $16.13 aint a living wage in SF, and also actually, this would be considered a living wage by those out-of-state pencil pushers only for certain people, those without dependents, for example.)

Anyway, that’s the update. I’ll tell you, this Gen X’er was surprised to see these govt-sanctioned bike rental outfits cattywampus across the street from each other the other day, hence this post.

Double Seven: Yesterday’s Blue Angels Show had Twin #7 Jets Performing – Photos from the Toll Plaza Area

Saturday, October 7th, 2017

Being atop an old gun battery just west of the Golden Gate Bridge Toll Plaza isn’t the best place to see the Fleet Week airshow, and it’s not exactly easy to get to, owing to jammed traffic, but it’s where I ended up. Here are some photos from Friday practice day.

Two of things are not like the others/ Two of these thing just don’t belong. Can you see?

That’s right, there are two two-seaters in there. Like this:

And this. There’s no flying required back there, so why not just put your arms out.

Most are single-seaters:
