GOJIRA Plays the Warfield

Tuesday, October 4th, 2016

And I thought he’d never make it out of Japan…

Gojira (ゴジラ?) is a portmanteau of the Japanese words: gorira (ゴリラ?, “gorilla“), and kujira (鯨 (クジラ)?, “whale“), which is fitting because in one planning stage, Godzilla was described as “a cross between a gorilla and a whale”,[20] alluding to its size, power and aquatic origin. One popular story is that “Gojira” was actually the nickname of a corpulent stagehand at Toho Studio.[21] Kimi Honda, the widow of the director, dismissed this in a 1998 BBC documentary devoted to Godzilla, “The backstage boys at Toho loved to joke around with tall stories”.[22] Godzilla’s name was written in ateji as Gojira (呉爾羅?), where the kanji are used for phonetic value and not for meaning. The Japanese pronunciation of the name is [ɡodʑiɽa]; the Anglicized form is /ɡɒdˈzɪlə/, with the first syllable pronounced like the word “god”, and the rest rhyming with “gorilla”. In the Hepburn romanization system, Godzilla’s name is rendered as “Gojira”, whereas in the Kunrei romanization system it is rendered as “Gozira.”

(You don’t see this kind of scene too often in the Mid-Market, despite what you might think after watching this video from Tawain what makes fun of San Francisco corruption and corporate welfare.)

Mayor Edwin Lee kowtows to Biz Stone:

Moving on…

The gals in the much shorter V.I.P. line were not exactly enamored with this loud, loud, loud two-man death-metal band…

…but Warfield staff didn’t seem to mind:

And, even though part of the SoMA’s on fire, Yet Another Kesha Bus made it through the smoke and into the Twitterloin, safe and sound:

Bob Dylan at the Warfield – Novel Way of Ticket-Selling – Scalpers and TicketMaster Pwned?

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Bluoz has the deets about all the commotion in the Mid-Market today due to Bob Dylan coming to the Warfield tonight.

“To do away with crazy surcharges and credit card fees and to avoid the threat of scalpers, the venue will only sell $60 general admission tickets the day of the show for cash only. Concertgoers can’t begin to line up until noon, doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the show goes on 8 p.m.,at which time everyone must enter. While having that much cash on hand could be an issue, along with the toll it’s bound to take on security, as one source told Pollstar, this is the event “people will be looking at” to see if the model can apply elsewhere.”

O.K. then. Let’s hope somebody can bring some water to the sweating masses

See you there!

Goldenvoice Vice President of Booking, David Lefkowitz said, “Given the state of touring and how fees have escalated, it was a real breath of fresh air to do something very consumer oriented by eliminating all ticketing charges, its almost a throwback to another time. It’s been almost twenty years since Bob Dylan played The Warfield and in my opinion, he is an Artist that needs no big promotions or hoopla.  He comes, he plays, and it’s an incredible experience.”
