Editor Jon Brooks of News Fix, “KQED’s bay area news blog,” has this today:

Try it yourself – type ”Oscar Grant” into Google Maps:
Oscar Grant Plaza, of course, is the name that the Occupy Wall Street people have given to their tent city location.
KQED has made a call down to Mountain View saying, “Hey Google, what’s the deal?”
We’ll see.
(I’m sure no one intended any dis for Frank H Ogawa.)

[UPDATE: Get more details right here. "NAParish" took steps to change the name back to Frank Ogawa Plaza at 8:44 AM this morning but that action is still pending. (It's like a Wikipedia editing war. Remember those, back in the aughts? Just like with that tiresome "Violet Blue" woman - I guess you can do the same thing on Google Maps. See below.)
[UPDATE II: Oh no, now, per Google Maps, Frank Ogawa Plaza has two names. See?
I imagine that "Oscar Grant Plaza" won't be on Google Maps at all in the very near future.]
[UPDATE III: And now it's back to normal, back to plain old Frank H Ogawa Plaza. "Google Reviewer Sanjeevi" has, once again, put the big DENIED stamp on the idea of any political name-changing. Google's "Local Names" feature is being abused no longer. Case Closed.]

There are two problems with this edit. One is that Google doesn’t seem to allow this type of political commentary by “renaming” an official feature. The name that some Occupy Oakland protesters are using doesn’t fit into any of the categories Google allows (Local is for the name in the local language, like using La Tour Eiffel as the “local” name for what speakers of English commonly call the Eiffel Tower). See http://goo.gl/gCf78 for the types of names that are allowed. The other problem is that the official name is Frank H. Ogawa Plaza, not just Frank Ogawa Plaza — and the official name should not have been removed a few edits back.”

Oh, here are the rules for cycling on sidewalks:
- GO SLOW – This is the chief of all rules for riding on the sidewalk. All the other rules fall under this one. You should never ride faster than a relaxed jog. The sidewalk is built for pedestrians, so you should not be going faster than them. Pedaling fast down the sidewalk is a perfect way to get hurt, hurt someone else or get pulled over by a cop.
- Yield to pedestrians – If you come up behind people walking, be very polite and wait for a good time to ask them to let you pass. Never come up behind them yelling, ringing a bell or anything else that could startle or scare them. You are trespassing on their terrain so be courteous.
- Check every cross street and driveway – This is the dangerous part! Drivers are used to pulling all the way up to the road before coming to a stop and turning onto the street you’re following. Make sure when coming up to a driveway or cross street that you slow down and check to make sure a car isn’t coming. They aren’t looking for fast moving vehicles to be coming off the sidewalk, so you have to be watching for them!
- Only cross the street at crosswalks – A good way to get hit by a car is to come darting off the sidewalk into the street randomly. Again, remember that drivers aren’t looking for people to jump off the sidewalks into traffic randomly. If you need to cross the street, wait until you get to a cross walk and do it there.
- Be willing to walk your bike – If you regularly ride on the sidewalk, there are going to be lots of times where the best decision is to get off your bike and walk for a bit. This is usually due to congestion. When there is just to many people around that you risk hitting one of them, it’s time to walk. Constantly keep it in your mind that you can get off your bike and walk if things seem “iffy”.

I’m thinking that people still expect too much from the new free Google Maps beta called Bike There. Of course, lots of folks asked Google for it, so, as of this month, we have it.
But, Bike There is not enough for at least one Berkeley resident at the tersely-named Berkeley Blog. And believe it or not, Sylvia Paull‘s recent tale of woe got a mention in the New York Timeseses’ The Bay Area. Seems that, after consulting her PC and starting a journey on her $5000* custom-made, carbon/titanium/unobtainium Ben Serrota ride:
“‘Ms. Paul found herself pushing her bike up ‘Everest’ hills. ‘If Google bicycle maps had told me the truth,’ she said, ‘I think I would have missed the party or found a ride with friends.’”
She should ask for a full refund from Google or something, huh? Or, alternatively, she could invest $5 or so in a bike map that shows hills.
Over here in the West Si-iiide of the Bay, people use the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition‘s SF Bike Map and Walking Guide to see how hilly the streets are. On the East si-iiide, you all have a wealth of free online sources plus the East Bay Bicycle Coalition‘s East of the Hills Map. It looks a bit like this:
Easy peasy, right?
Of course, some people like Get There more than others, but oh well.
*Mas o menos, those things cost muy dinero, especially the ones that are “much easier” to carry on BART than a laptop PC.

Google Maps just added real estate listings as an optional search. This comes on the heels of the very useful Google Transit. It seems our Friends at the Googleplex seem to think we want more everything:
Google Maps is evolving from a driving directions and business search tool, to a comprehensive representation of all the world’s information, on a map.” That’s why Google Maps started to integrate different layers of information when you search for an address and it added a new “More” button to enable layers for photos and Wikipedia articles.
Don’t count on this new service to show you a complete picture of the Bay Area real estate scene (there’s no listing shown for Red Rock Island for example), but it’s a great start. You can even refine your search by number of bathroooms, etc. Get started by simply clicking on “Show search options.”
Pretty soon, we won’t need real estate agents or brokers for anything, right?
