Crayfish: It’s What’s for Dinner in Golden Gate Park – Everybody’s Eating These Tiny Lobsters

Here’s what I saw the other day:

I’m supposing it’s crayfish from the bottom of Stow Lake.

Now let’s review

Sometimes crayfish look very red, like a lobster, sometimes not?

Great blue herons throw them up in the air and then catch ’em with a big thwack. THWACK:

There’s mudbug juice everywhere.

But pied-billed grebes are neater

Procambarus clarkii is a freshwater crayfish species, native to the Southeastern United States, but found also on other continents, where it is often an invasive pest. It is known variously as the red swamp crawfish, red swamp crayfish,Louisiana crawfish, Louisiana crayfish or mudbug.

This took a while so I’m not sure these photos show the same crawfish. The baby would keep dropping it and the mother would keep diving to retrieve.

Dramatic Grebe! It’s Time, Once Again, For Adorable Pied-Bill Grebe Season at Stow Lake in Golden Gate Park

Of course, everybody’s favorite artificial lake in Golden Gate Park is Stow. (Stow Lake is famous for cute animals and pointless lawsuits involving the Boathouse – my mind’s eye can see the judge’s clerk rooting around the courthouse for biggest DENIED (or NOPE!) stamp available,* oh well.)

Anywho, those cute diving ducks, those pied-bill grebes should be getting more active soon – see how dramatic they can be? As dramatic as any chipmunk or prairie dog, anyway.
