Fireworks Over Golden Gate Park a Huge Success – Go Giants! – Soft Thuds Heard for Miles – Ended Before 10 PM

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

[UPDATE: Oh yes, the birds, too – I forgot about them.]

Get up to speed right here on tonight’s surprise fireworks show in the Music Concourse for the benefit of the San Francisco Giants and Major League Baseball.

Per the SFGiants:

“If you’re in The City and you hear fireworks in a minute, don’t be alarmed, it’s just the #SFGiants private World Series Gala at GG Park.”

But, uh oh:

“Seeing complaints from people in SF about the Tuesday night Fireworks. Giants better win the World Series for the city after this one!”

Und:

“Oh apparently it’s some fireworks show for the Giants over GG park? Effing stupid. I’ve never seen a city so obsessed with a sports team.”*

Here’s the video.

Can you hear the chants of, “Let’s go, Giants?”

And here’s the mise en scene with Sutro Tower in the background.

This show was scheduled to end at 10:25 PM but concern over area NIMBYs pushed things up a half-hour or so.

Go Giants!

The White Fallow Deer of Point Reyes – Originally from SF Zoo in 1948 – “NPS Genocide” and “The Bambi Effect”

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

This is the closest I’ve ever been to The White Deer of 4.5 star Yelp-rated Point Reyes National Seashore. It was the view I had from Pierce Point Road.

Now, back in the day, the National Park Service was hiring snipers to hunt down the non-native Fallow and Axis Deer so that Tule Elk and other native species would have an easier life. Well, as detailed by Zachary Zoblig, the Bambi Effect” kicked in like you wouldn’t believe. Thusly:

“They’re just beautiful — they’re like unicorns when they come bounding out of the mist.”

After all the commotion, the NPS gave up on the hunting idea. The new approach is a massive contraceptive program that will eliminate these critters by 2025 or so.

The Friends of the White Deer and Save the Point Reyes Deer are just going to have to live with that…

Good luck, Bambi.

Jerry Brown Takes Down: “Operation Knockout” Arrests 94 Norteños and Sureños in Salinas

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

California Attorney General Jerry Brown can’t abide gang wars in Steinbeck Country. So today he’s telling us about the people in his Gang Suppression Enforcement Program, along with a whole bunch of other California and federal peace officers, arresting 94 suspected Montery-area Norteños and Sureños.

And to keep things going, Jerry just announced a local, Salinas-area gang task force.

Anyway, there was a big press conference today – look at who all was there.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, U.S. Attorney Joseph P. Russoniello (Northern District of CA), Monterey County District Attorney Dean Flippo, Salinas Chief of Police Louis Fetherolf, Salinas Mayor Dennis Donohue and a host of others down in Salinas :

Check it:

“Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr. today discussed “Operation Knockout,” in which agents from Brown’s Gang Suppression Enforcement Program (GSEP) of the California Department of Justice’s Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement arrested gang members after an eight-month, wide-ranging investigation and sweep targeting the most powerful gang leaders in the Salinas area.”

Brown Announces Major Gang Takedown in Salinas

SALINAS – Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr. announced that more than 200 agents from his Gang Suppression Enforcement Program and other law enforcement agencies today arrested 37 members of two vicious gangs responsible for a rampage of violence — including more than three dozen murders and 200 shootings — that terrorized the citizens of Salinas and nearby areas.

Today’s mass arrests culminated an eight-month operation, code-named “Operation Knockout,” aimed at apprehending members of the Norteños and Sureños gangs that turned Salinas into a hub of murder, robbery and drug dealing.

The operation targeted the most dangerous gang leaders in the Salinas area. In addition to the arrests made today, agents seized 40 pounds of cocaine, 14 pounds of marijuana, nine ounces of methamphetamine, $34,000 in cash, and 12 guns. An additional 57 arrests were made before today’s sweep.

“Operation Knockout was designed to restore safety to the streets of Salinas,” said Brown. “Citizens in John Steinbeck’s hometown deserve better than having to endure a violent crime rate that’s three times the national average. We owed it to the people of Salinas to arrest these out-of-control gang members and ensure a heightened sense of personal security throughout the city.”

Gang vs. Gang in the NOPA – Cops, Guns, Arrests Tonight on Hayes Street

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Can’t really say what happened tonight on Hayes Street between Baker and Broderick Streets, but the word on the street is that the SFPD hauled two suspected gang members and their guns off to the hoosegow. I’d say a ton of cops were there, but if you weighed them all up it would probably be more than that – a huge response.

Just some of the motorcycle cops preparing to exit the scene:
