Mr. Gary Oldman Graces San Francisco for “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” – British Consulate’s Sneak Peek – “Cool Britannia”

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Well here it is:

“The British Consul General, Ms Priya Guha, requests the pleasure of your company at a reception prior to a screening of “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” November 16, 6:00-7:15pm”

O.K. then. And that’s not at all a typical kind of thing for San Francisco’s consular community, really, but our British Consulate-General is out there in the Bay Area promoting the heck out of Britain. (Cool Britannia they used to call it.) And actually that’s not a hard job when you have Kate Middleton’s Royal Wedding this year (and her recent California visit, dropping by just to say “hi”) and the upcoming 2012 Summer Olympics and whathaveyou.

Add to that list the start of a movie series that could rival James Bond and Harry Potter, who knows. It’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (that’s a nice trailer, huh?) featuring Mr. Gary Oldman (H.P.’s godfather!) and, already, it has an obscenely-high 97% positive rating at Rotten Tomatoes. Check it:

“Based on the classic novel of the same name, the international thriller is set at the height of the Cold War years of the mid-20th Century. George Smiley (Gary Oldman), a disgraced British spy, is rehired in secret by his government – which fears that the British Secret Intelligence Service, a.k.a. MI-6, has been compromised by a double agent working for the Soviets.”

So last night, San Francisco’s first female British Consul General, Ms. Priya Guha, introduced this film at the Century 9 in Westfield’s San Francisco Centre. She pointed out that Britain is quite big in the movie biz, having over 100 film studios and 2500 post-production companies.

And then it was on with the show.

And then, who popped up as the curtain dropped but Gary Oldman and Director Tomas Alfredson. (Or so I’m told.) This very same crew was up in San Rafael two days ago and who knows where they’ll be tonight:

“OH MY GOD, Gary Oldman is coming to the Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy screening tonight?!!”

Anway, I don’t have a shot for you, so:

INSERT PHOTO OF MSSRS. OLDMAN AND ALFREDSON WITH CONSUL GENERAL HERE

But I do have shots from last night of people who may or may not have wanted their photos taken, so I’ll leave them caption-free. (I’ll note that CBS Channel 5 was def. in the house with famous Liam Mayclem and Beth Spotswood (she’s earned a page on Wiki now? Wow) on hand.)

So, Enter the Circus yourself, why not, starting December 9th, 2011.

See you there!

John Avalos Tweets: “I Have Kids and Read Harry Potter – David Chiu is Peter Pettigrew and Willie Brown is Voldemort”

Friday, November 11th, 2011

Of course the best deleted Tweets in the world were posted at the (now-defunct) @FakeRosePak and (still-active@sdwiener accounts, but let’s see if we can’t add to the canon.

Here’s what was posted at @AvalosSF this AM for just two shakes of a lamb’s tale:

“I have kids and read Harry potter. Chiu is Peter Pettigrew and W B voldemort.”

Oh snap!

I interpret that to read, “David Chiu is Peter Pettigrew and Willie Brown is Lord Voldemort.”*

Correct me if I’m wrong on that.

Artist’s conception of Board President David Chiu as devious and unloyal Peter Pettigrew and He Who Shant Be Named as Lord Voldemort:

Anyway, that evanescent Tweet is gone now, down the Memory Hole.

So leave us forget all about it.

*But who is Harry Potter in this metaphor?

The World’s Most-Stolen Chopsticks Can Be Found at Bushi-Tei on Post in Japantown – Plus, Handmade Pocky!

Monday, August 29th, 2011

Oh dear, I guess Carolyn Alburger already posted a photo of those famous Bushi-Tei chopsticks, you know, the ones so unique that high-end diners swipe them. So, I’m not really adding anything here:

(Honestly, I missed the photo that she posted. Don’t know how that happened…)

Darn, this means that I’m just another free-loading internet wantrepreneur, another aggregator.

So, I guess alls that left to do is send out a misleading, hyped-up, SEO-optimized, Huffington Post-style Tweet and then I’ll watch the $$$ roll in…

No, I can’t do it! I gots to add value before this post is done.

Let’s see here, Bushi Tei’s chopsticks look like Harry Potter wands, like mini-Elderwands. (There, I’ve started the rise from mere internet wantrepreneur, mere aggregator, up to the lofty perch of blogger, of content creator. Hurray! Whew, that was close.)

But wait, there’s more.

OMG, handmade Pocky!

“Chocolate Pot de Creme – Blackberry and Elderflower: Handmade Pocky” by Pastry Chef Yuko Fujii:

These Pockies are the cutest things I’ve seen since those mini choco burgers that Spork gives you to ease the pain right at the time you realize you dropped $80-something at a revamped KFC. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that. And, last I heard, their Original Recipe Pull Apart Rolls with whipped honey butter and sea salt are still free, price on the menu is listed as $0.00. Hurray! Oh yes, please don’t steal Spork’s hefty, metal, straight-outta-Pusan sporks neither.)

I was going to save these Pockies for another post, but I sure don’t want anybody to call me the “A-word.”

Anyway, bushi tei is swinging for the fences up there on Post Street – I mean, they had a Michelin star(!) for a while, right? (And let me tell you, you won’t find too many of those in District 5, let me tell you.)

And now, bushi-tei has a new chef, I understand, so who knows what the future will bring.

Obsolete Bookstores Have a Good Cry Over “Pottermore,” Author JK Rowling’s New Harry Potter Joint

Friday, June 24th, 2011

Remember those Harry Potter midnight bookstore parties back in the day? I don’t, personally, but I understand that a good time was had by all.

But the book series is over, so it’s time to move on. Move on to Pottermore, where you can get more Potter.

Now what’s that, do I hear the After All I’ve Done For You card being played? Yes I do:

We’re… disappointed that, having been a key factor in the growth of the Harry Potter phenomenon since the first book was published, the book trade is effectively banned from selling the long-awaited e-book editions,” he said.

But Life Goes On.

Oh well.
