Letting Hayes Valley NIMBYs Plan Out Horrible Octavia Might Have Been Correct Politically, But Not In Real Life

Another death on the World’s Shortest Boulevard and another film crew to video the intersection for the evening news

I’m not saying that the monumentally-flawed process that  begat this mess is responsible for all of the traffic deaths in the area, just some of them.

So like why is it that drivers going to Hayes Valley get more time to turn left onto Octavia each signal cycle than all the peds and cyclists on Market outbound? Peds get only four seconds to proceed west each 90-second light cycle, right?

For instance.

Why not say no more left turns at this intersection – why not that?

What else can be done to fix horrible horrible Octavia Boulevard?

Fulton Street was Never Like This Before Octavia Boulevard – The Unintended Effects of the SFMTA’s Octavia Boulevard

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013

You know what the architect of excessively-wide Octavia Boulevard says about it now? She says we built it too wide.

Anyway, at the time, former District Five Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi warned about the unintended effects of this brainchild of property-owning Hayes Valley millionaires.

One of the effects of gridlock on and around Octavia Boulevard is that it now makes sense for drivers to avoid Oak in the AM.

Thusly:

Is this a good thing?

I think not.

Poorly-Designed Octavia “Boulevard” Proves Too Much for Mercedes-Driving Mom – Plows into NIMBY Green

Monday, December 31st, 2012

To the right of this accident scene is Octavia Boulevard.

And to the left, a block away, is Octavia Street.

And in the middle, you’ll see NIMBY Green with a newish Mercedes Benz CLS sitting on top.

Via ciprofloxacin – click to expand

You see, Octavia used to be a regular old street until Redevelopment (a bad idea from the 20th century) and the failed Octavia “Boulevard” experiment (a bad idea from the 21st century) came along.

Anyway. this is what results when “activists” are valued more than traffic engineers

Cat Burglar and Cat Woman Steal a Bubenreuth Cello from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music? Photos

Tuesday, September 18th, 2012

The Reddit Community is going crazy over this one.

Is this what it would look like if Anne Hathaway / Parker Posey (on the left) and Bobby Flay (on the right) conspired to steal a little violone from San Francisco’s world-famous Conservatory of Music in Civic Center / Hayes Valley?

From yesterday:

“Hey Reddit, my son’s very expensive cello was stolen from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music yesterday. Here are the surveillance pics from security that show a young couple making-off with my son’s primary instrument. FWIW, this instrument is one of the most expensive things I have ever owned. It was stolen around 4:05 PM on Sunday, September 16th, 2012. These people are nonchalantly making-off with a full-size cello that was purchased when my son graduated from a smaller cello when he was 12. We’ve owned it for 11 years. He’s in the collegiate division at the San Francisco Conservatory and it is not only the vehicle for his ability to obtain a classical music degree, but is also his sole source of income, as he uses it in performances and recordings. We’ll be doing a media blitz tomorrow with local stations and the SFPD, but I’m hoping the community can help. Any leads are incredibly appreciated.”

All the photos.

Do you have enough Clues? Who will solve this mystery?

(Is it Mrs. Peacock in the Conservatory with a Revolver?)

Sunday was Girly Photography Day in San Francisco – But Can You Tell Who’s the Model and Who’s the Photographer?

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

I couldn’t.

Hey, remember this?

IF YOU”RE NOT THE MODEL, BE THE PHOTOGRAPHER

I do.

Anyway, these days I suppose you can be both a model and photographer, why not?

The first one in Golden Gate Park here is easier:

But this one, spotted just two minutes later, I still haven’t figured out:

Good Times: Throwing Pieces of Structural Iron Off the Third Floor of John Swett Alternative Elementary School

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

Do people actually get paid to huck heavy pieces of metal off of the top of John Swett Alternative Elementary School on McAllister at sunrise?

People do.

Heck, if they called me up, I’d do it for free, watching them triangles accelerate at 9.8 meters per second until the satisfying crash landing. Boooooonk!

This activity sounds like a pile driver. It’s enough to wake the entire neighborhood on a Saturday morning.

What do these things weigh, 20 pounds? Fire in the hole!

Here’s Why London Breed Will Be Appointed District Five Supervisor Within a Week

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

This is just my WAG.*

Oh, Meet London Breed, courtesy of the Western Edition.

And Meet London Breed, through her own words, courtesy of the Twitter.

Now, let’s let Lee Hubbard of the Oakland Post Online take over:

“Among those reportedly interested in the District 5 seat are Julian Davis, president of the board of Booker T. Washington Community Service Center; Gabriel Haaland, political director of SEIU Local 1021; Phil Ginsburg, Recreation and Park Department Director; and Michael O’Connor, the co-owner of the Independent Music Hall. Breed, who directs the African American Cultural Center on Fulton Street, has expressed interest in the position.  She has a large segment of the Black activist community behind her, pushing Mayor Lee to appoint her as supervisor. “London is a woman who is definitely qualified to sit in that seat,” said Bridgette LeBlanc, with Black Women Organized for Political Action (BWOPA).  ’She is a native San Franciscan who was raised and works in the community. She is a leader who is electable, and she can build bridges.’”

OMG, it’s LB with the POTUS!

Here are the reasons:

1. She is the choice of Willie Brown.

2. She is the choice of Willie Brown. Yeah, I know what you’re thinking, but why should Chinatown power broker Rose Pak have any say in D5, which, historically, anyway, is/was, along with D10, an “African-American district?”

3. She is the choice of Willie Brown and she has waaaaaaaaay less baggage than recent mayoral appointee Mohammed Nuru. I mean, how could she have as many closet skeletons as he? So, he makes the cut and she doesn’t – would that make sense?

4. She is the choice of Willie Brown and as a matter of fact, about four years ago, Willie the Sorting Hat actually tried to place London into the Assembly(!), or into the Tri-Wizard Tournament or somewhere. That seemed a stretch at the time, but appointing LB as Supe doesn’t seem a stretch at all right here and right now.

5. She is a 2008 “graduate” of Emerge California, which encourages women to run for elective office. And when I say “encourages,” I mean pressures. (Signing up for Emerge** is kind of like saying that you plan on running for office (or higher office) sooner rather than later.) Anyway, the questions Mayor Ed Lee’s people would have for London concern her commitment for becoming and maintaining her position as Supervisor, right? So, London, if not now, when?

6. She is the Worst Case Scenario for San Francisco’s progressives, IMO. She would be a train wreck for them, actually. So as far as Ed Lee’s political faction is concerned, picking anybody else would be an unnecessary risk.

7. She is the choice of the Internet, más o menos.

Those are the reasons – the strongest are #1 and #6.

So, if I know my Ed Lee, London Breed will be the appointee.

Bank on it.

As that Omar Khalif guy recently said:

Ed Lee is going to pull a G. Newsom n D5 appointment. Keep yo eye on my sister.”

*Which means I’ve figured this out on my own, unlike say, a year and a half ago when I got a phone call telling me the game plan about how Mark Farrell was going to win in District 2, which he did.

**And pay your money, but, srsly, it’s a pretty sweet deal, if you’re a woman planning on running for office soon, and if you’re not a Repub or a Green, and if you’re fortunate enough to get picked.
