“Melinda Gates Bans Apple Products From The Gates Household” But is That Really So Bad? No iPads, No iPods, Just Zunes

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Don’t ever try to smuggle an Apple product into the house of Melinda Gates, cause she’s just not having it.

Now, Melinda, what if one of your children says, “Mom, I have to have an iPod?The reply:

“I have gotten that argument — ‘You may have a Zune.’”

What she means is a Zune HD, which is Microsoft’s version of an iPod Touch. Let’s learn about it, after a quick photo shoot that happened when Seattle turned aqua blue, for some reason.

MG in the lab, for some reason:

And we’re back.

Now, I myself have a Zune HD – they were going for $140-something just a few days ago but just this moment they’re a big higher at the Amazon. The primary reason I got it was to avoid any iTunes conflicts with my iPod Classic, one that’s been happily chugging along since ought-four. Anyway, compared with an iPod Touch, the Zune HD is cheaper, smaller, faster, smarter what with its OLED screen and NVIDIA chip and whatnot. And it’ll easily fit into the secret pocket of the right front pocket of your blue jeans, so that’s a bonus. I’m at a loss as to why it doesn’t have rocker buttons on the side for volume, but oh well.

Your takeaway is that Apple lowered prices of the iPod Touch line solely due to the arrival of the Zune HD, so you benefit from this piece of machinery regardless.

Anyway, if you’re reading this, Melinda, and you’re still in a you may have a Zune mood, I’ll gladly take a 64GB with the AV Dock, just have your people email me.

And, I’ll thank you sincerely – I won’t feel like I’m being deprived or nothing.

Zune HD rULeZ!

Is Famous Cole Hardware a Local Store, a Chain Store, or Something In Between?

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

I don’t really get why San Francisco doesn’t have a Home Depot or a Lowes or what  have you. We’ll probably get one next year of course, but part of the reason why we haven’t had one up to now is opposition from beloved Cole Hardware.

As seen in Cole Valley. What do you see?

IMG_0400

What’s the relationship betwixt Cole Hardware and the national Ace Hardware Co-op with billions dollars in sales? Don’t know. When you buy a hammer at Cole Hardware, does that get included in Ace’s claimed $3 billion in annual sales? Don’t know.

Ace can afford to hire spokespeople like former Oaklander John Madden, so that allows for a national brand and that has allowed Ace to become the “Savior of Main Street“? Really?

(Ace was famous for dropping Suzanne Somers as a spokesmodel back in the day because a goofy photo of her surfaced and then was used for a waterski company’s ad. Here’s the PG-13 version (oddly Photoshopped, for some purpose) and the here’s the R-rated Full Monty, though it looks more like something from an especially joyful mammogram, which she probably could have used at the time as she’s now a breast cancer survivor. Speaking of which, don’t “have a discussion with your doctor” when you turn 40 ladies, just demand your mommygram, that’s it, no discussion needed, to Hell with any federal task force. Speaking of local, poor Suzanne was kicked out of USF (nee Lone Mountain College for Women) for getting preggers back in ’64. What a different world it was back then. But I digress…)

How many Cole Hardware stores would have to open before it would be considered just another despised chain store? Don’t know.

And I don’t know what’s up with the 12 felony counts in that alleged procurement scam.

So, I’m not seeing a black-and-white issue here. I’m seeing charcoal grey and ash grey and medium grey and honestly, I’m not seeing a whole bunch of diff between Cole’s and Lowe’s.

Just saying, get your hammers and mouse traps wherever you wish, of course. I don’t care.

Premiering Tonight on KQED-TV – Robert Redford’s Saving the Bay: The Story of San Francisco Bay

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Saving the Bay: The Story of San Francisco Bay debuts tonight at 8:00 PM on KQED 9HD.

It looks to be awesome. Check it out, why don’t you?

image001

Narrated by Robert Redford, this lively and timely series is about one of America’s greatest natural resources – San Francisco Bay. Shot in high definition, it consists of four episodes focusing on the geological, cultural, and developmental history of San Francisco Bay and the larger northern California watershed, from the Sierra Nevada mountains to the Farallon Islands in the Pacific Ocean.
From the Gold Rush to the Golden Gate Bridge, and through World’s Fairs and World Wars, San Francisco Bay has been central to the identity of one of the world’s leading economic, academic, recreational, and cultural regions. This series explores its evolution, how we almost lost and then saved the Bay, and how we are planning for the future, including wetland restoration, increased public access, and balancing the often competing needs of a fragile ecosystem that is the centerpiece of a major urban area.

Can the Scrappy Little Zune HD Take on the iPod Touch and the Borg that is Apple?

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Here it is, the Apple Borg Store at Market and Stockton in Union Square. It’s packed these days with people checking out the new iPod Touch.

See? The greeters at the door sometimes say, “We are Borg. You will be assimilated.” They know they’re not supposed to say that, but sometimes they’ll forget and say it anyway.

But what’s this? Straight out of Seattle (by way of China) comes the new Zune HD!

Its message? “Hello from Seattle.” That’s what it says right on the left edge of this tiny little thing. See?

First read up on “From OLED to Tegra: Five Myths of the Zune HD“ from the Apple fan-boys (you know, to get up to speed ‘n stuff) and then tune in to this blog later on to get the first impressions (like digital radio – how does that work in hilly San Francisco) of the new mp3 player from the kids at Microsoft.

It’ll be fun.
