Know Your Jerk Helicopter Pilots of San Francisco: Flying Under the Golden Gate Bridge for Fun

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

I don’t know, the FAA doesn’t seem to mind this kind of hot dogging so who am I to complain:

Here’s what it looks like from inside.

Sometimes these birds land in the water due to engine trouble and then the Coast Guard tows them to shore.

It’s a living, I s’pose…

Dirty Harry 1970′s Time Capsule: Groove on KGO’s Orange Chopper and KPIX 5′s Robin’s Egg Blue Van

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

Well, Dirty Harry debuted 40 years ago so let’s use his movie series to see what the 415 looked like back in the 1970′s.

From The Enforcer, here’s KGO Radio’s groovy orange Bell 47J Ranger, looking not that much different from the choppers they used on M*A*S*H*.

Above the old Embarcadero Freeway and close to the build site for Embarcadero 4 (our youngest Embarcadero, it turns out) and Embarcadero 5,  the crazy Hyatt Regency Embarcadero Hotel:

And back then, the Equinox revolving restaurant actually revolved. See it atop the Hyatt?

“The Hyatt Regency San Francisco is a large, imposing exposed concrete structure. It was built in 1972, designed by notorious architect John Portman. He is known for his outlandish designs. The Hyatt Regency here is no exception. It’s hard to describe, but I’ll try. It was built as a modern concrete structure around an atrium with extensive use of odd angles…presumably to take advantage of the odd, triangular-shaped property and beautiful bay/city views. From some angles it looks like a normal building, others like a pyramid, and from yet others like spires shooting up to the sky. It’s extremely unique and enjoyable to look at by us architecture and engineering dweebs. To everyone else, it’s a big gaudy hotel that is seriously starting to look dated architecturally.”

Now here’s Harry leaving City Hall back in the mid-1970′s – can you imagine an uglier color than this blue?

I can’t.

Anyway, stay groovy…

Oh, So That’s What a Stealth Helicopter Looks Like: REUTERS Shows What Got Left Behind at Osama’s Compound

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

Reuters has this shot from OBL’s compound showing the tail of a stealth helicopter. And there are some more shots here.

I guess not all of the military’s stealth chopper programs got cancelled.

Anyway, news to me…

The Buzzing Dolphin Helicopters of San Francisco County – Why is the Coast Guard Flying Over Us These Days?

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

We’ve had some extra low-and-loud chopper traffic over the 415 recently, not sure why.

Are our U.S. Coast Guard HH-65 Dauphin helicopters taking a new short cut from the east side to the west side, buzzing the NoPA and Nob Hill, when they’re on search and rescue missions nowadays? Could be.

As seen over the Western Addition (yes, there are tiled roofs on the DivCo).

As it noisily flew over my vast real estate holdings I started thinking about how a trend like this could affect property values, so I started yelling and waving my arms and chanting “U.S.* out of NoPA!” But I remembered I’m not a God Damn Landed Gentry NoPA NIMBY Millionaire and then everything was fine once again. Crisis averted.

Semper Paratus.

BlackHawk Up: Watching Them Military Choppers Fly By While Atop the PG&E Tower of the Golden Gate Bridge

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Good times.

See them fellers on the bridge? That could be you, someday:

Don’t think this was on an airshow day. It’s just every military pilot’s dream to buzz the GGB on the taxpayer’s dime, so this kind of thing happens all the time. They generally don’t try to fly ‘neath the bridge anymore.*

*Former Presidential candidate John Kerry tried doing just this back in ’67, but he “chickened” out. Oh well.

Potero Hill NIMBYs Kill SFGH Medical Helipad Without Firing a Shot

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Heather Smith of Mission Local has the update (renderporn included) on the massive San Francisco General Hospital project.

Looks like you can just forget about a helipad for now:

First, rumors need to be dispelled: ‘I just want to settle one thing right now,” says Jeff Critchfield, Chief of Staff. “Will this project include a helipad? There is no plan for a helipad. I’ve heard it mentioned a few times this evening. There was a prior application for a permit. It expired. There is no plan for a helipad.”

“Another hand goes up. ‘Does No helipad mean “No applying for a helipad permit in the future?”

The helipad is not part of project,” says SFGH CEO Susan Currin.

So, there you have it.

The NIMBYs’ goal of trying to kill accident victims has been attained, and there are no signs of any changes on the horizon.

Here’s their Plan B – giant soldiers with General Dynamics FIM-43 Redeye missiles:

Make no mistake, these NIMBYs are trying to kill you. Maybe they’ll succeed, when your luck runs out…

Take your pick StopHelipad.org or StopHelipad.com - there are plenty of lies in both.

It’s your choice as to which selfish group’s website has the greater number of false statements.

Oh well.

“They’re trying to kill me,” Yossarian told him calmly.

“No one’s trying to kill you,” Clevinger cried.

“Then why are they stopping the helipad?” Yossarian asked.

“They’re stopping the helipad for everyone,” Clevinger answered. “They’re trying to kill everybody.”

“What difference does that make?”
