Freeway vs. Highway Explained – “Our Street is Not a Highway!” – But, Oh Yes, It Is – San Mateo Update

Monday, September 15th, 2014

Apparently, some millionaire land-owning burgers down in  San Mateo, specifically San Carlos, specifically east San Carlos, right next to the 101 are/were mad about taking one for the team, about losing the parking spaces in front of their hou$e$ for the Greater Good.

I know that because I saw all these signs. You see, it’s OUR PARKING SPACES vs. THE CONCERNS OF EVERYBODY ELSE IN THE WORLD.

Or, as they put it, it’s CARS vs. KIDS:

The problem with this is that all roads in California are highways, pretty much.

So, in fact, HOLLY STREET IS A HIGHWAY.

And actually it has it’s own freeway offramp – some people might think that’s a good thing, IDK

Know Your San Francisco Jaywalker, Great Highway Edition: What Motivates This Jay? How Can He Be Trained?

Monday, September 1st, 2014

I don’t know, every street on Great Highway has a timed traffic signal, but that’s not enough for this dude, so his routine is to cross in the middle of the block.

Oh well.

What’s that, the term “jaywalking” should be in quote marks because the only reason it’s agin the law is because of some conspiracy from 80 years ago? All right, well, gee, I’ve only heard that one about 150 times now, Gentle “Urbanist,” but what do you want, you want to make jaywalking legal? All right, but then more peds will die – is that what you want? OK fine.

Somebody’s going to have to update Wiki…

My love is in league with the freeway
It’s passion will ride, as the cities fly by
And the tail-lights dissolve, in the coming of night
And the questions in thousands take flight
My love is the miles and the waiting
The eyes that just stare, and a glance at the clock
And the secret that burns, and the pain that won’t stop
And it’s fuel is the years
Leading me on
Leading me down the road
Driving me on, driving me down the road

OMG, It’s Dolphin Season Near the Golden Gate Bridge – Check Out This Recent Video – Babies Too

Here’s a shot from Land’s End from a few years back:

A bit mottled – that’s the way they are sometimes – click to expand

Now let’s hear from Redd Rivett, who recorded some of these critters just the other day:

“These bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) were on the East side of the Golden Gate Bridge, next to Fort Point, in the cove. We get to see them in the summer and fall, when they come in to Ft Point cove for a while maybe twice a week or so. They live mostly along the outer coast to the south of us, all the way to Monterey Bay. Thanks Bill Keener of Golden Gate Cetacean Research for the info.”

Google Maps Changes the Name of Van Ness Avenue to El Camino Real – But You Can’t Object, It’s Perfectly Legal

Wednesday, August 8th, 2012

Oh, c’mon, man, is this why tourists ask me where El Camino Real is?

Are you seriously, Google?

They are seriously and it’s all legal. Check it:

California Streets and Highways Code Section 635(b): State highway routes embracing portions of Routes 280, 82, 238, 101, 5, 72, 12, 37, 121, 87, 162, 185, 92, and 123 and connecting city streets and county roads thereto, and extending in a continuous route from Sonoma southerly to the international border and near the route historically known as El Camino Real shall be known and designated as “El Camino Real.”

So basically, everything that could possibly considered ECR is ECR – that’s what the solons of Sacramento have determined.

News to me.

You’ve won this one, Google.

Google the Devil but I Feel Lucky.

Crazy Hand Signals: Tell Other Motorcycle Riders a Speed Trap is Behind You by Tapping Your Head

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

See how that works? You want to warn your fellow riders that there are cops handing out speeding tickets on Highway 37 (aka Sears Point Road) up there in the Great White North, so all you have to do is to tap your head in an exaggerated fashion when you see others going the opposite way.

Thusly:

Anyway, that’s one of the codes you can transmit when you’re a cowboy, on a steel horse you ride.
