Just Try to Read This Official Car Towaway Notice From the City of San Francisco

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Come on, you can do it. Take a gander at the dollar amount of the fine for abandoning your car on the streets of San Francisco. Let’s agree that dollar amount has two digits, but it is $75? $85? $88? $98? $80? $90?

This is no mere triviality - if you don’t get the proper notice then you might not have to pay the fine. As to whether San Francisco can legally tow away your ride with the way the local laws are written these days, well, that’s up in the air.

Can I explain why the owner was given only three days to move in light of the last year’s policy change allowing seven days? No, no I cannot. Click to expand.

Are San Francisco drivers gonna get a massive refund the way it just went down South San Francisco Way with the red light cameras? [KRON's Eve Taft- why isn't she in every romcom Hollywood can produce?] No se.

I’m the first one to rain on the parade of plaintiff’s attorneys with ridiculous notions of what constitutes a decent lawsuit, but this one, this one looks good.

The mise-en-scene atop Buena Vista Heights at the end of Masonic, where it’s so hilly you might need an exemption to drive your SUV around.

This aging, now-woodless Willys Jeep Wagon ur-SUV needs no exemption for excessive weight as it’s not close to the weight limit. (I ought to call it in to Pimp My Ride or something.) Wonder where it is now, wonder if it got towed. [Dude, where's my car? What happened to my woody?]

Anyway, we’ll just have to bide our time to see what occurs with this not-yet-certified class action lawsuit. Writer Joe Eskenazi will keep us posted, I’m sure.

The Bagels of Lincoln Park: Do They Come From New York via the Lincoln Highway?

Friday, November 13th, 2009

Not sure who’s behind this bagel ritual at the plaza of San Francsico’s Lincoln Park, right near the Palace of the Legion of Honor.

Saw this type of scene a few times before. Maybe some raccoon or pigeon lover with a regular supply of old bagels is trying to a feeding using the railing of the overlook?

Dozens of bagels, ritually arrayed. What does it mean?

I like to think that Lincoln Highway enthusiasts buy bagels at Times Square at the start of their trips and then deposit the bagels in San Francisco as a gift of love.

Grapes of Wrath Redux – Hard Times in Napa Valley Wine Country

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Napa’s in the Bay Area, right? It’s super close to San Francisco. So let’s take a look and see how the Great Recession of 2007-???? (aka the “late-2000s recession“) is affecting our Neighbor to the North.

Let’s start with the view from the St. Helena Highway, aka Route 29, aka Main Street. (It’s the main drag for the whole entire valley, you know.) Here’s the old Radio Flyer on the train tracks motif:

IMG_9080 copy

What happens if you can’t afford the rent and a car? What happens if you, as many in Napa and Sonoma counties have done before you, get a DUI or two and you lose your license to drive? How do you get to work or the store without a car? Let’s take a look:

napa copy

Napa can’t afford sidewalks? Apparently. Of course, if you’re on a bicycle (not recommended) you would pedal along on the shoulder/breakdown lane, but if you’re on your feet, well, remember all the drunk drivers? I mean, DWI is a Way of Life up there.

I mean, bacon-rich Cincinnati has its local Hog Report so shouldn’t lush-rich Napa have a local DUI Report? Oh wait, it does

By the way, be sure to “Avoid the 9″ policing agencies that will bust you:

“Napa County Sheriff’s Office, the Napa Police Department, the California Highway Patrol, St. Helena Police Department, Calistoga Police Department, the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, Napa Valley College, American Canyon Police Department and Napa County Probation.”

OMG, can you believe that bucolic Napa has (or had) 2400(!!!!) outstanding DUI arrest warrants? Mercy!

Anywho, walking in Napa is no picnic. Perhaps it makes the most sense to just amble on the old train tracks (which, of course, are the newish home of the despised (and belovedNapa Valley Wine Train.)

But what about the wineries, how are they doing? Well, the Disneyesque Robert Mondavi Winery had no waiting for their famous 75-minute Signature Tour and Tasting on a recent balmy October Sunday. (Of course, back in the day, the place was packed to the gills, reservations required.)

And how about Francis Ford Coppola’s Rubicon Estate, where they have mandatory valet service and a red carpet and where they don’t let you in without a $25 cover?

Well here it is, during Sunday primetime, it was totally wide open. A handful of cars in the lot, no valets, no $25 charge, it’s just y’all come down.

IMG_9045 copy

Now let’s head up to St. Helena proper, where the millionaires live and you can buy Rolexeses and high end choco all you want? Let’s check out David’s Jewelers, Since 1976:

IMG_9067 copy

Dave has sweet window displays (man, that Rolex fish, that’s art ready to hang, baby)…

IMG_9064 copy

…but no goods to sell. Uh oh.

IMG_9066 copy

There are Halloween decorations but that’s it. It’s closed down, apparently. Oh well.

And let’s not even think about heading Further North to the St. Helena Premium Outlets place. Cue tumbleweeds.

So, what’s worse:

Busy, crowded Napa Valley; or

Ghost town* Napa Valley?

That’s a tough choice for some people. Oh well.

But now’s your chance to get on up there and see what it was like back in the day, before Napa became a major tourist destination. COPIA: The American Center for Wine, Food and the Arts isn’t around anymore, but all the other places will be staffed with folks happy to see you, I’m sure.

I almost wanted to buy something, but then I remembered about the Buy Local Movement. I’m not a local, really, so I probably shouldn’t spend my hard-earned up there.

But you, you’re welcome to visit, especially before things pick up again in the Spring of 2010.

See you there!

*Be aware that the Great Recession has seemed to pass by the popular eateries, such as Mustards Grill (man, it’s tough to get in there), Taylor’s Automatic Refresher (busy, busy, but the wait isn’t too long) and Yountville’s bestarred (c’mon, it’s a word) The French Laundry (forget about it).

Dog is My Co-Pilot on the Streets of San Francisco

Friday, July 24th, 2009

You know, when you’re coming through San Francisco keeping busy applying makeup holding a cell phone eating a Pocky chocolate-coated breadstick with one hand and holding the remaining Pockies with the other, it pays to have another set of eyes keeping a lookout on the road ahead.

As seen in the Middle Sunset District heading toward the Golden Gate Bridge on 19th Avenue, aka the Senator Leland Yee Double Fine Zone:

Feel free to eat delicious Pocky treats whenever and wherever you wish – that whole sodium cyanide thing involving the Monster with 21 Faces sorted itself out more than a quarter century ago. (Wow, Wiki, you certainly are well-informed.)

More Pedestrian Countdown Signals Come to Geary Boulevard in the Richmond – Hurray!

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Can you spot one of the the new pedestrian countdown timers being installed in the Middle Richmond District last week? It arrived all wrapped up.

Plus new road signs too, probably they’ll be more legible or something. But that’s a small thing compared with the installation of new signals.

IMG_9862 copy

Maybe fewer people will die on the mean streets of the Richmond District after we get all this new equipment. (How many peds got mowed over by cars in the Richmond District last year? More than you might think.)

Anyway, the new lights can’t hoit.

Hurray!

More Pedestrian Signals Coming to 19th Avenue in the Sunset

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Nowadays, it seems that every intersection on the 19th Avenue double fine zone in the Sunset District has either:

1. a dedicated pedestrian signal (with a countdown timer thrown in as a bonus), like this one on Ortega : or

2. evidence of recent work indicating that a pedestrian signal is a coming soon, like this one on Santiago.

Hurray!

Your grandfather’s traffic signal. Click to expand:

At Long Last, Pedestrian Signals Installed on 19th Avenue in the Sunset

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Don’t get out much to this part of the Westside Fog Belt, so this is the first I’ve seen of pedestrian signals at some intersections of 19th Avenue, aka State Highway One.

Of course, this improvement comes a little late for some

IMG_7164 copy

Look for them, tirelessly counting down 24/7, on Park Presidio and the Sunset District part of 19th Avenue.

Hurray, I suppose.

Larger Than Life Globetrotter Andrzej Sochacki Visits San Francisco

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Raconteur Andrzej Sochacki really gets around, but it just so happens he’s staying  in our little burg tonight. Judging by the way he’s been hauling up the coast from Acapulco, Mexico on El 15D and more recently on The One and The 101 in his 15-year-old Land Cruiser, he’ll be in Oregon soon.

(Do you think this 1.5 decade-old Toyota is ready for the ash heap? It has more life in it than a brand new Chevrolet Trailblazer, believe it or not.)

He’s going the distance. What drives him so? Why does he journey around the world, around the world?

Bay Bridge Enforcement Action – CHP Busts Drivers in “Bus Only” Lane

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

The California Highway Patrol (they’re hiring!) takes a dim view of you trying to save 5, 10, 20 minutes by using this “bus only” flyover westbound to get past the Bay Bridge toll plaza. So much so, they’ll even hang out near the thing on Mother’s Day in order to hand out $271 citations.

Personally, I’ve looked at the signs and I can’t really figure out if 3+ person carpools are allowed on this empty flyover all the time or just during primetime M-F. But oh well.

Now if you’re The Feds, with a tiresome, predictable blacked-out SUV, then you’re in luck. Please drive through. Click to expand:

But if YOU drive past these CHP officers, then you’ll be met by some more on the other side.

Ka ching. That’s how they get you…

CalTrans and the First Amendment – Full Speed Ahead with Adopt-A-Highway

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

It looks like the California Department of Transportation is giving the green light to the San Diego Minutemen group to continue participation in the Adopt-A-Highway program. So, get used to seeing signs like this down Mexico / Fun Diego way. Per KGO-TV:

“The new regulations will allow all groups, even controversial ones, to clean up the trash as long as their cause isn’t criminal or violent in nature.”

O.K. then.

This one is similar to signs with the names of other potentially controversial groups, such as the Democratic Party, the National Orgainzation for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (N.O.R.M.L.) your gays and lesbians, and the LUV Boutique chain of adult-entertainment stores.

And, of course, the Klan. Leave us never forget the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK):

This sign used to be on seen by those on the Rosa Parks Highway in Missouri.

Would the Klan be elgible for a sign in California under CalTrans’ rules? That’s unclear.

Oh well.
