The Rear Entrance of the Hippie Hill McDonalds at Stanyan and Haight Emptied of Hippies + A Security Guard

Thursday, November 28th, 2013

There I was, taking Heckle and Jeckle out for a walk when I noticed that the rear patio of world-famous McDonalds 3566 was entirely bereft of loiters AND I noticed a private security guard walking by.

I’ve never noticed either of these two things before.

Just saying.

Stay hungry, my friends.

It Takes a Village (of Cops) to Bust a Hippie – The Sad State Justice Stephen Breyer’s Old High School, Lowell

Friday, July 13th, 2012

Here’s your Lowell High School timeline:

  • 1913 – School moved to new, larger campus on Hayes Street between Masonic Avenue and Ashbury
  • 1962 – School moved to current campus to make room for future expansion and add a library, gymnasium and larger auditorium

So this is where Supreme Court Associate Justice Stephen Breyer actually went to high school, on the #21 Hayes line, back in the 50′s. Now it’s the John Adams Campus of troubled City College of San Francisco.

There are fewer drug dealers hanging about these days, but they’ve been replaced by bike thieves…

Speaking of which, I think this ride has been abandoned for months now. Oh well:

Oh, here’s what Lowell High School looked like in 1917:

And here’s the same place today:

See if you can match up the bricks with the shot at the top.

(Not much difference excepting for the Toyotas out front and the bright white racing stripe up high. That’s an ADA-complaint elevator shaft hanging off the side these days, one would think. Probably should have been standing about ten feet to the left – that telephone pole in front of the main entrance on Hayes probably is in the same place today as 1917 so it’d be a good tool for alignment. A tilt-shift lens and/or Photoshop would produce an almost identical image as the 1917 shot.)

Campus Information

Built in 1911 as Lowell High School, the John Adams building consists of 64 classrooms and labs, an auditorium, a state-of-the-art child care center, and offices for counseling and administrative services.  At this campus, we offer a variety of credit and noncredit courses and programs.  John Adams Campus also houses the Dean’s Office of the  School of Health and Physical Education.  Our mission here is to assist students in accomplishing their educational goal and to ensure student success.

Justin Ryan Beck is Back! OccupySF = Hippie, Cop, Nervous Pup, Hipster, Black Power Salute, MUNI 1057 (Cincinnati, 1948)

Monday, October 31st, 2011

Famous San Francisco street photographer Justin Beck has bounced back from losing his camera on the mean Streets of San Francisco, looks like.  He’s got another Nikon to work with so that’s nice.

Check it, a canary yellow streetcar.

Is this an album cover?

If a Tree Falls in Golden Gate Park, What are the Odds It Will Land on Some Pot-Smoking Hippies’ Van?

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Well, maybe not a tree, but how about a big old branch of a eucalyptus [See Comments] cypress(?) tree what’s stood in the Golden Gate Park for a century or so?

The branch comes down and hits this van, straight outta Indiana. So out pop two hippies, who just happened to be inside smoking weed.

The clear-headed one is all, “We gotta get out of here, man,” but the other one just couldn’t understand the urgency, he didn’t appreciate the danger.

See?

So they worked together to move the branch as much as they could and then sped away with a quickness. The SFPD showed up five minutes later to fix things so that the branch no longer blocked a lane of Fell during the evening drive.

(Later on, another nondescript white van took over the same space, which, as you can see, is just behind yet another nondescript white van. It’s like people from all over the country just decide to Go West, and then they end up in the 415…)

Actually, something in the Golden Gate Park Panhandle is probably falling next to some pot-smoking hippie pretty much all the time.

So let’s be careful out there.

And now, let’s remember the time when Gaia struck back at a forester, a Subaru Forester:

Ben Davis-wearing members of Laborer’s local 261 + giant Swedish buzz saws = problem quickly solved.

Excepting for Caroline’s Subie, that is.

The City crew failed to leave a note, but I think the driver will figure things out for herself after seeing the flat tires and all the sawdust.

Just another foggy day in Paradise…

It Takes a Village (or the SFPD) to Bust a Man Who Parks His Love Seat-Equipped Minivan on Fell

Friday, August 19th, 2011

An entire hippie drum circle was riveted on this scene in the Golden Gate park Panhandle a while back.

Note love seat on the roof of the minivan – it was there for about a week.

Note bowling ball imprint on windshield.

Note how many cops it took to get this man and his friend on their way:

Appeared to be a lot of drama going on.

Anyway, there’s a lot of material here, so just make up your own story…

OMG, the McDonalds “Dollar Menu” Has Returned to Haight Ashbury – McDoubles for All, Hurray!

Monday, June 6th, 2011

Remember back in the day, back last year in 2010 when the Hippie Hill McDonalds at the West End of Haight Ashbury on Stanyan got rid of its Dollar Menu, per Will “Big Daddy” Kane and Eric Thomas of KGO-TV?*

Well, the Tea Partiers nationwide had a field day with that one. And the “homeless veterans” and runaway teens, well they didn’t appreciate that price increase one bit.

But it’s all different now.

I first noticed when I was acting as a lookout for my friends who were shoplifting at the new Whole Foods Upper Haight – I could see a sign on the Micky D’s across the street that’s all “4 MEALS UNDER $3.**” See?

And I thought, well, that’s sounds like a pretty good deal, wonder if they brought back the Dollar Menu. Well, check it:

So, as of June 2011 anyway, you can enjoy the Great Recession Dollar Menu at McDonalds.

That means that they’ll add a patty to your $1.09 Cheeseburger and then lower the price to boot – that’s the Miracle of the McDouble.

Hurray!

Let’s hope they’ll still have the Dollar Menu running at the next Haight Ashbury Street Fair:

Sunday, June 12, 2011, from 11 am until 5:30 pm

*Per KGO, this store is located at Haight and “Canyon.”

**Apparently, that sign has been up there for the duration, since last year at least, To me, a $2.99 meal deal and the Dollar Menu go hand-in-hand, but I guess I was mistaken about that. (Your McDonald’s manager/ownerfeels that s/he should get about $7 per customer on average so can you imagine how offensive your order for three McDoubles to go is? It’s highly, highly offensive…)

The Gayly-Colored “Hippie Express” Arrives Above San Francisco – A Swiss International Airbus A340 Over Twin Peaks

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

My first sighting of the Hippy Express, coming in direct from Zurich.

(Look at them skinny, thirsty, old-school “high” bypass engines. What a mistake the A340 was for Airbus. Oh well.)

Groovy New Swiss International Air Lines Jumbo Starts Non-Stop SFO-Zurich Flights

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Now, I already told you about the plans for SWISS to start “direct” non-stop flights back and forth to sister-city* Zurich six days a week, so I won’t have to remind you about the thirsty, thirsty, unlucky and unloved Airbus A340** jumbo or McKinsey and Company’s Hunter (aka Jägermeister) Strategy, the very same eggheaded strategery that finished off the predecessor of SWISS. Anyway, everything has gone as planned – that’s the news of the day.

Switzerland’s new flag carrier has followed through and put new non-stop flights on its sked as of this week. And here’s something I didn’t know – they have this San Francisco-themed livery that’s far out and groovy. Basically, this special new paint sticker job tells the story of an epic voyage from the land of dairy cows to the land of fruits and nuts, complete with a reference to the Kraken and squid-infested waters of the North Atlantic. Some are dissappointed with the Summer of Love theme but oh well.

Check it:

*San Francisco has lots and lots of sister cities. It ain’t no big thang, actually.

**The A340 is basically an A330 twinjet that’s been stretched and that’s had another couple of engines tacked on. (The wings had to be strengthened more than once to handle the extra engines – engineers were repeatedly surprised with how wobbly things got during testing.) A340s have had more than their fair share of freak accidents and hull losses, but they haven’t killed any of their passengers, so that’s good. Now, does Airbus wish it had done a Giant Twin instead, you know, something like the wildly successful Boeing 777? Oh hell yes. An A777 would have been awesome for Airbus. Oh well. You, as a passenger, don’t have to worry about all that, you just have to kick in a bit more to help pay for the extra avgas required for the extra engines. Oh well, enjoy your stretched-out Flying Pencil.

All the deets. (The CEO’s name is Harry Hohmeister(!), for real. Means “river master” or something, surprisingly enough)
