Locals Go HONK HONK as General Motors Tests Its “Cruise” Robot Cars Specifically In and Around Construction Zones, These Days, on the Streets of San Francisco

Monday, March 5th, 2018

Here we go – southbound Masonic at Anza. The left turn pocket lane that this robot might have been expecting is now gone, due to the endless construction projects in and around the 3000 feet of Masonic betwixt Fell and Geary, so Mr Roboto patiently waits, doing nothing. There’s a short left turn arrow at the beginning of the cycle at this unusual intersection, but somehow this self-driving car (or its human driver IDK) missed that chance to turn so it had to wait like 30 seconds blocking southbound Masonic’s “fast” lane:

Not that that’s agin the rules or anything, but blocked drivers honk-honked nevertheless.

Man, look at all the ppl riding around in these cars these days:

And actually, if I did miss the left arrow phase, which I wouldn’t have, I wouldn’t then wait so far back for my second chance at making a left as my light went amber – no no, I’d firmly get into the intersection to show my intentions of going left, for one thing.

I’d agree that It Aint Easy To Drive In Frisco and I’ll note that it seems that GM’s finishing school for robot cars appears to have a tough curriculum, what with all the Cruises I see cruising by / stopping at construction sites these days. But…

Why Can’t Cruisey Drive?

The Quiet Chaos Resulting from a CCSF Campus Not Opening Its Parking Lot for an Hour – Endless Double Parking and Blocked Buses

Tuesday, November 14th, 2017

IDK, I’ve never seen this, in all my years – people double parking near the CCSF John Adams Campus for up to an hour, ’cause somebody forgot to open the gate:

And this is around the corner – it took this #21 Hayes driver a couple minutes of beeping / waiting to buck up the courage to pass traffic what seemed way too far to the left:

But everybody else waited patiently, as if there were no other place in the world to park. Then at 7-oh something AM, the gate opened and Life went back to normal:

How wedded CCSF is to the automobile.

Too bad MUNI sucks…

Toyota Prius Driver Basically Drives Backwards on Fell in order to Make a Left on Masonic

Wednesday, October 12th, 2016

IDK, man, you can get away with this at around 10:00 PM or so, but the proper way to handle things during rush hour is to exit the Chevron on Masonic. Otherwise you end up blocking traffic for a minute or so, and you have all the concomitant honking ‘n stuff. JMO

Let’s hope this Prius driver sees the mistake here…

Perpendicular Parallel Parking: Sure, “Believe in Yourself,” But Not This Much – When “Leaning In” Goes Too Far

Tuesday, May 31st, 2016

I guess you’re driving north on Van Ness and then you start to turn east on Golden Gate but then you see a sweet sweet empty parking space in front of Yet Another Abandoned McDonalds In Frisco, well, this is what it looked like:

And then after all the resultant honking, we ended up with this:

And then I had to turn away – it was just too embarrassing to watch, so I don’t know the conclusion of this vignette.

But c’mon people! You’re allowed to block one lane of traffic whilst parallel parking, but not three.

You’re just not that special…

Drivers Still Haven’t Gotten Used to the Unique Left-Turn Setup at Fell and Masonic

Wednesday, May 20th, 2015

And I don’t think they ever will.

In this case, the driver of the blue Toyota SUV was trying to turn left to southbound Masonic from Fell. The problem was that this lane is straight-only, so the driver of the larger white SUV laid on the horn for more than ten seconds:

Then the green arrow for the left turn lane came on, so the green Ford pickup made the lega turn and the offending driver followed, illegally from the wrong lane:

Perhaps the offending driver thought s/he was in the right, IDK.

This isn’t how I’d set things up here, but anyway…

Pious Prious Prius: Of Course, Most Toyota Prius Drivers are Perfectly All Right – But This Guy Fulfills the Stereotype

Thursday, October 17th, 2013

So Dude here was all pouty on Fulton because the driver ahead of him waited for somebody else to park.

Most drivers in SF would simply go around the obstacle. And the rest would wait patiently.

But not Dude. He just sits there and honks his horn.

Then he guns his engine, yes there’s a tiny four-banger in there, to get to the corner a couple of seconds after the light turns red.

And then a jack rabbit start, shown here.

Prius drivers, you’re not special.

Prius drivers, you’re not Part Of The Solution.

Prius drivers, why don’t you straighten up and fly right?

San Francisco’s Latino Yes on Prop 8 Truck Parade

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Most of the vehicles were trucks of one sort or another, many of them were work vehicles, and most of the passengers appeared to be Latino. What was it?

It was an evanescent parade of honking vehicles surrounding San Francisco’s City Hall for a brief period yesterday.
