Is Rec & Parks Spraying Herbicides on Twin Peaks this Month? You Bet

Monday, November 16th, 2009

This is what a Notice of Pesticide* Application looks like – it’s from our oddly-named San Francisco Recreation and Park Department. They’re spraying herbicides, like Roundup ProDry from Monsanto and Garlon 4 Ultra from Dow, on 15 hilly acres up there, right above the Midtown Terrace. That’s what Rec and Park is doing this month.

Why? Well, why not?

Targeted for extermination are Cotoneaster, Pittosporum, and Arctotheca calendula. See?

Maybe it’s that stimulus money they’re spending.

Now, while the impoverished R&P is doing that, they’re also sprucing up, wait for it, the HQ building for the R&P.

See?

Oh well.

*Or “herbicide” –  sometimes people call herbicides “herbicides” instead of pesticides. Sometimes.

Well-Wishers Bring Too Many Balloons to Obama Headquarters

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

This was the scene at 939 Market the other day when well-wishers sent so many celebratory balloons to Obama Biden HQ that there was trouble getting them all inside.

Such are the troubles of a front runner.

Ron Dudum’s Campaign for San Francisco District 4 Supervisor Kicks Off

Friday, August 1st, 2008

This was the scene at Ron Dudum’s campaign headquarters on 2239 Taraval between 32nd & 33rd Avenue at his recent open house. Campaign Manager Tuan Nguyen is saying some of their recent events have attracted over 100 supporters.

Per Tuan:

“The Ron Dudum for Supervisor Campaign  will push forward and continue to gain new voters with the strong neighborhood support of locals.  This campaign is not about race or ethnic identification.  This is an opportunity for Ron Dudum,  a Sunset native, and District 4 to bring our experience, enthusiasm, and uniquely Sunset concerns to City Hall.”

It’s August so things are hotting up in this foggy district. Read about Supervisor Carmen Chu’s “big money” race against Ron here.

The Empire Strikes Back – Senator Carole Migden’s Campaign Kickoff

Monday, April 21st, 2008

Oh my. Hundreds of volunteers came through the huge San Francisco Headquarters of Senator Carole Migden this past weekend. On hand to cheer her on were former Senate President John Burton and future Senate Pesident Darrell Steinberg.

A couple of termed-out Assemblymen are ganging up on her to turn her out of office. Read on:

It’s a wide-open race involving the incumbent senator, Carole Migden, and her two challengers, Assemblyman Mark Leno and former North Bay Assemblyman Joe Nation. Each has a decent shot at winning the primary that is tantamount to victory in the overwhelming Democratic Third Senate District.

As much as this race is about anything, it’s about a struggle between the Democratic members of the (ironically-named) upper and lower houses of the Legislature in Sacramento. Senate leadership appears to be making a stand on behalf of Carole.

She’s got seven figures to burn through and lots of enthusiastic volunteers, so things should get interesting pretty soon. The Battle for Minis Tirith will look like a cakewalk compared to this election season.

This shot shows about half of the largest room at HQ – the Great Hall of Ninth Street.
