The San Francisco Business Times Hosts Prayer Breakfast at the Hilton this AM – Praying for Ed Lee’s 49% Approval Rating

Friday, September 14th, 2012

(You know, praying that that percentage doesn’t drop too much further.)

Well, read the news and turn the pages. Here’s an recent ouchy from the HuffPo’s Aaron Sankin:

Ed Lee Approval Rating Drops: San Francisco Mayor’s Popularity Dips Below 50 Percent.

Whoops, how could that be?

Now let’s hear from Ron Russell of the Bay Area Observer. Just yesterday he pointed us to a couple things:

1. “Visa moving headquarters from San Francisco to Foster City

“…marks the departure of one of the best-known companies, with a global brand, from the city where it was born…”

2. “Gap moving workers to Pleasanton

“Social media companies and other tech companies are competing for space in San Francisco,” said Edward Del Beccaro, managing director with Transwestern Real Estate. “So other companies have to consider whether to renew their leases in San Francisco or look for other locations.”

Oh, and look at who else is leaving town. That’s right it’s the San Francisco 49ers:

Justin Herman Plaza, September 12th, 2012 - enjoy your weekend and then check out Homecoming 2012 this Sunday at 5:20 PM - this is a game you won’t want to miss – Detroit Lions. (I think I prefer the older uniforms, actually. Moving on…)

So, I’m struggling to understand how the City Family’s all-knowing, all-seeing Dear Leader Ed Lee, whose primary qualification for getting appointed appears to have been pleasing Willie Brown whether Willie Brown was doing something good or Willie Brown was doing something bad, is so obviously steering us in the right direction.

Will Twitter (the so-called “Mid-Market phenomenon”) ever employ 6000 souls in San Francisco? Hells no. So why do we base our planning around that prediction?

That’s the kind of thing I think about these days.

All right, enjoy your brekky at the Hilton, everybody, while I wonder who writes stuff like this:

“Cranes are in the air, office and residential towers are rising and San Francisco’s real estate market is red hot!”

“Join us for your tour of San Francisco’s future!”

Ooh, I have one too. It goes like:

“Let’s take the Golden State Warriors away from pathetic Oakland – It’s like stealing candy from a baby!”

Oh, and this:

“Let’s not talk about the failed America’s Cup anymore! At least not today.”

All right, back to “reality.” Here’s the invite. Enjoy:

You Don’t Like Bikes on Sidewalks? Well, “Then Put a Flippin Bike Lane on Divisadero!”

Monday, October 10th, 2011

[UPDATE: Oops. Speaking of which, there are a lot of different possibilities for Oak betwixt Baker and Scott. Taking out the parking lane on the south side of Oak is an idea. In the meantime, take the lane. Or head up Baker to Fulton to Divis to McAllister and then roll all the way down to Mid Market and beyond - that way you avoid the horrible part of Octavia and SFPD bike enforcement actions, etc...]

Appears as if Carly Schwartz, Founding editor of Huffington Post San Francisco, has a beef with the Livable Cities / Livable Streets movement, at least as far as Divisadero is concerned:

Then put a flippin bike lane on Divisadero! Thankshttp://bit.ly/nwO7u9

Now that’s interesting because the City, instead of just taking out the useless median on Divisadero, well, the Powers That Be, the City Family, actually went in there a few years back and made the median wider so now there’s less room for bike riders.

See?

Does it look like, as some say, there’s “excess roadway space” here? Not at all, IRL.

And the sidewalks are like ten feet wide.

So sure, ride your bike on the wide sidewalks of Divis. I mean, I seriously doubt you’ll ever get a ticket.

Or “take the lane,” it’s your choice. (But I don’t advise taking the lane on Divisadero, uphill or down, personally.)

So, how do we fix the horrible thing our City Family and the Livable City movement just inflicted on the Commonweal?

Well, how about narrowing the fast lane to make the slow lane wider?

Or, how about narrowing the median to the width you’ll find north of Geary and then taking out the useless vegetation?

Or, how about just taking out the whole damn useless median? What’s that, it would cost $$$ to move the light standards? Well, get some money from the Feds. Didn’t they just pay money to fuck up Divisadero just a few years back? I think so. So maybe they’d pay to take the light standards out of the middle of the street and put them in the comparatively wide sidewalks of Divis. You know, shovel ready, jobs jobs jobs! What’s that, local businesses and area NIMBYs and real estate interests prefer the trees in the useless median and other aesthetic stuff? Well, who put them in charge?

(Or, maybe we could narrow the wide sidewalks, but that would cost even more.)

So maybe Divis doesn’t deserve a bike lane, but how about just giving back the space that was taken for useless trees?

Wouldn’t that be a start?

WTH: Huffington Post “Bay Area Street Safety” Blogger is Fronting for a Plaintiff’s Law Firm?

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

All right, work with me here. There’s a new blogger on the HuffPoSF. Check it:

“Ben Buchwalter lives in San Francisco’s Mission District and writes a blog on Bay Area street safety.”

But then you click over to the so-called “Bay Area street safety” blog only to see that, en realidad, it’s an “Accident Attorney’s Blog” for an oddly-named law firm.

R.I.P. Lionel

Now, that blog has some curious entries complete with curious phrases, like “clear safety dilemma” used twice in three paragraphs.

Mmmmm…

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

[Oh, here it is - they've just gone live.]

Boy, the amount of anti-Huffington Post chatter in Bay Area media circles seems to have increased lately, you noticed that?

Mmmm, perhaps it’s due to the imminent launch of the well-financed Huffington Post San Francisco website?

Could be.

Let’s meet the crew at ground control down in the FiDi/Union Square area.

Blog Editor Clare Richardson:

OMG, OMG, “Huffington Post San Francisco” is Almost Here! That’s Right, HuffPo SF Launches July 2011

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

[UPDATE: Appears as if it will launch July 13th, 2011.]

You know, the debut of Huffington Post San Francisco could have happened all the way back in aught-eight, but it didn’t.

No matter, it’s coming soon, as you can see on the Twitter:

Let’s plan for it to go live on July 10th or so.

If you want to get a sneak peek of what it will look like, substitute San Francisco for Chicago here and then you won’t be too far off.

(Will the Bay Area Media Worker’s Guild approve? Likely not. Oh well.)

This is going to be a big deal - the HPSF website is going to get monster traffic.

This launch is going to be an 8.0 on the Bay Area Website Richter scale.

You’ve been warned…

Anyway, Bon courage, HuffPo SF!

The Huffington Post Reports 100% of Obama Workers are “Optimistic and Fully Committed to the Campaign!”

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

The Huffington Post’s Off The Bus project has a webpage that describes the “current mood” of 792 Barack Obama workers.

Turns out that, even last year, all 792 were “Optimistic and Fully Committed to the Campaign!”

Wow. Wonder how they feel these days. Some of them might be livid  but you just can’t tell.

Sadly, Hillary Clinton workers appear to not have their own webpage. You’ll just have to guess to see how they are feeling.
