Tuesday, April 29th, 2014

Hey look at this silly goose on Hippie Hill in Golden Gate Park:

So you notice the new gopher holes and you figure there might be some action so you pass the assembled hippies talking about philosophy or drugs or whatever.

Oh, much closer now:

I’ll spare you the shot of this boid waiting above the gopher to give you the lunge:

Poor little feller:

And now, down the hatch…

The Presidio Gets Into Geocaching: A New Wildlife-Themed, Outdoor Treasure Hunt – You Know, For Kids!

Friday, August 12th, 2011

Grab your GPS device and head on over to the Presidio to get in on the Geocaching craze.

All the deets, below.

HIGH TECH HIDE-AND-SEEK” IN THE PRESIDIO

GEOCACHING TAKES FAMILIES, ADVENTURERS OFF THE BEATEN TRAIL

Presidio of San Francisco (August 11, 2011) — “I found it!” exclaimed Alex, his face beaming with pride and the excitement only a 7-year old can muster. With a little help from his mom’s smartphone and a lot of perseverance, Alex had located his first geocache, discreetly hidden near a trail in the Presidio’s Lobos Creek Valley.

The Trust, in conjunction with the National Wildlife Federation, has brought Ranger Rick’s Geocache Trails—a new wildlife-themed, outdoor treasure hunt—to the Presidio.

Sometimes referred to as a game of “high-tech hide and seek,” geocaching is relatively new to national parks, but the phenomenon has been around for more than a decade. Using a smartphone or handheld GPS device, people hunt for “caches” (typically small boxes) hidden in public places around the world.

“Geocaching in the Presidio combines the excitement of a treasure hunt with the reward of discovering lesser known parts of the park,” says Damien Raffa, education and volunteer program manager for the Presidio Trust. “Offering this kind of adventure helps us bring new people into the park and expose them to some of the Presidio’s hidden gems.”

The Presidio offers two ways to play. Visitors can go to www.presidio.gov/kids/trails/ and download GPS co-ordinates, while those without a GPS device can download a map for a self-guided experience. Then simply follow the co-ordinates to uncover the geocache. The cache will never be buried but could be tucked inside a log or tree stump, under a bush or behind a wall. Inside the cache, searchers will find a logbook to sign and a unique stamp depicting a member of the Presidio’s wildlife community.

Ever more deets, after the jump.

The White Fallow Deer of Point Reyes – Originally from SF Zoo in 1948 – “NPS Genocide” and “The Bambi Effect”

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

This is the closest I’ve ever been to The White Deer of 4.5 star Yelp-rated Point Reyes National Seashore. It was the view I had from Pierce Point Road.

Now, back in the day, the National Park Service was hiring snipers to hunt down the non-native Fallow and Axis Deer so that Tule Elk and other native species would have an easier life. Well, as detailed by Zachary Zoblig, the Bambi Effect” kicked in like you wouldn’t believe. Thusly:

“They’re just beautiful — they’re like unicorns when they come bounding out of the mist.”

After all the commotion, the NPS gave up on the hunting idea. The new approach is a massive contraceptive program that will eliminate these critters by 2025 or so.

The Friends of the White Deer and Save the Point Reyes Deer are just going to have to live with that…

Good luck, Bambi.

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

That Longshot Magazine (formerly 48 Hour Magazine, or something that raised the ire of CBS lawyers) is promoting their weekend in L.A. by giving away $750 today.

They just did it, the treasure has been found, at around 5:40 PM.

Collecting the booty on Palo Alto (“high tree,” the namesake tree is still there, in the background) near Sutro Tower:

“Clue Number One: Look among the smelly invaders and colorful edibles.

Clue Number Two: Beginning Advanced Spanish

Clue Number Three: Approximate elevation 228 meters

Clue Number Four: A Map by Wendy MacNaughton”

Along that vein it went…

Longshot writer Alexis Madrigal points out the hidey-hole after the $750 was found:

How will they top this?

“We’ll unveil a theme and you’ll have 24 hours to produce and submit your work. We’ll take the next 24 to select, edit, design and lay everything out. The end results will be a beautiful glossy paper magazine, delivered right to your old-fashioned mailbox. Don’t like paper? Word. We’re also going to roll out a Website and iPad version over the same weekend. Oh! And we’ll keep the cameras rolling the entire time. There may even be a radio program. We promise it will be insane.”
