Why Has California’s Handicapped Placard System Turned Into a Free Parking Subsidy for the One Percent?

Tuesday, December 4th, 2012

Two luxury cars, two handicapped placards, yet again:

Why is it that most Mercedes Benzeses you see parked on the street in the Financial District, you know, the 94111 and the 94104, have handicap placards hanging from the rear view?

Could it be that California’s handicapped placard system is being abused by wealthy bay area drivers who feel that parking should be cheaper and easier for them?

Yep.

Are you kind of a sucker for NOT having a handicapped placard considering that you could easily ask your doctor to sign the form for the DMV?

Yep.

What Giant American Flags Mean at Car Dealerships Today, and What They Meant Two Decades Ago

Wednesday, July 18th, 2012

I’ll start with the easy one. Way back in the 1990′s, 1991 specifically, giant U.S. flags started popping up at American car dealerships all over the country.

They were designed to remind you to Buy American. (Although even at the time, many “American vehicles” were made in Canada, or from overseas.)

It didn’t really work so hot, so most of those flags, in front of your Oldsmobile,* Plymouth,* and Saturn* dealerships for example, went away.

And these days? Well, I don’t know, really.

As seen on Van Ness, formerly known as Auto Row:

Maybe this giant flag means that an American car dealership used to be here.

I think it was a Ford store with lots and lots of Added Dealer Markup…

Oh well.

*A kind of car, back in the old days.

Well, It Looks Like San Francisco’s Famous “Van Ness Auto Row” Isn’t Dead After All – Nissan and Infiniti Move In Today

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

Well it appears as if “A Survey of Automobile-Related Buildings along the Van Ness Avenue Corridorwill need a new chapter ’cause Nissan has just moved into the old Ellis Brook Chevrolet building.

Get your deets below on the big news for our old Auto Row.

Buh-bye, Ellis Brooks Chevrolet. Make way for Nissan:

“Nissan & Infiniti Open New Dealerships In Downtown San Francisco - Unique Dealerships Owned and Operated by Penske Automotive Group

SAN FRANCISCO, May 1, 2012  – Expanding into a key sales market that is known for a strong interest in leading-edge technology and environmentally smart products, Nissan and Infiniti have appointed a new Nissan dealer and a new Infiniti dealer in the heart of downtown San Francisco.

The new dealerships are located on Van Ness Ave., one of the Bay Area’s most famous and well-traveled automotive retail corridors. Both dealerships are owned and operated by one of the largest automotive retailers in the world – Penske Automotive Group (NYSE: PAG).

“Infiniti and Nissan products and brands directly align with San Francisco’s unique customer profile, making this effort a strategic element of our plan to grow sales volume in the U.S.,” said Brian Carolin, senior vice present of Sales and Marketing for Nissan North America, Inc. “The 100-percent electric Nissan LEAF has already surpassed 11,000 sales in the U.S. alone. Along with the forthcoming Infiniti LE all-electric luxury sedan, we will make a defining statement in a region known for innovation and technology leadership. We are excited to be represented in such a dramatic way by a leading retailer like Penske Automotive Group in this pivotal market.”

The opening of the new dealerships will help contribute further to Nissan and Infiniti’s sales and market share gains in the U.S. market. In 2011, the Nissan Division posted its best-ever U.S. sales year – up 17.3 percent over the previous year – and Infiniti continues to gain ground. Nissan North America, Inc reported its March 2012 sales of 136,317 units versus 121,141 units a year earlier, an increase of 12.5 percent, and a record for any month in the company’s history.

“I’m very pleased to offer the Nissan and Infiniti brands in world-class, state-of-the-art dealerships in San Francisco,” said Penske Automotive Group Chairman Roger Penske. “Our new facilities are unrivaled within the city offering an array of automotive services, including sales, service, parts, vehicle preparation and delivery areas all under one roof.”

Nissan of San Francisco and Infiniti of San Francisco are located in the Ellis Brooks Building – which opened for vehicle sales in 1935. The 8-story, 200,000-square-foot complex is unparalleled by any other dealership in the San Francisco marketplace and is one of the largest automobile retailing locations in the United States. The building was completely renovated to provide distinct representation for each brand, and features multiple levels of indoor new and pre-owned vehicle display, service, maintenance and retail parts area, separately branded showrooms, front entrances and signage.

Cirque du Soleil’s TOTEM is Totally Awesome – The Top Five Acts in Photos – But It Leaves AT&T Park Dec. 18th

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

Well, the reviews are in for five star Yelp-rated Totem down at Le Grand Chapiteau tent in the parking lot of AT&T Park.

Nobody doesn’t want you to see this show:

Robert Hurwitt:‘Totem’ review: Whimsical vision shapes sweet show

Karen D’Souza: Review: ‘Totem,’ playing in San Francisco, one of Cirque du Soleil’s most magical productions

Leslie Katz: “High drama at Cirque du Soleil’s ‘Totem’

Chad Jones: Thrilling return to form in trippy Totem”

Cindy Warner: Totem in SF shows Cirque’s evolution into higher art form, totally dazzling

Practicalities:

Join the CirqueClub, why not?

They used to have 15% and 20% discounts but I don’t know how those links are working now. Costco San Francisco will sell you a pair of Category 1 (good seats, but not the best) for like $157, I think.

Even the cheapest Category 3 seats for $50-something aren’t all that bad, actually. How happy you’ll be depends on the particular act and your particular seat, I s’pose. You won’t be far from the stage at all but you will be off to the side.

Parking is $20 but you can always park for free in the evenings on Channel one block to the west, just south and west of the 4th Street Bridge.

All right, on with the show.

Roller Skates:

OMG, this one‘s off the hook. Is she going to hit her head on the platform? And just how many RPMs is she spinning now? Check out Massimiliano Medini and Denise Garcia-Sorta from a documentary here and don’t miss the start of their IRL romance at 2:30. This is the best act by far, IMO.

Fixed Trapeze Duo:

OMG, it’s Rosalie Ducharme and Louis-David Simoneau on the trapeze. Per Leslie Katz, “A trapeze duo cleverly plays out figurative as well as literal ups and downs of romance in a delightfully attitude-filled act.” Yep, pretty much.

Perches:

Amazing. Aluminum poles, very bendy.

Russian Bars:

This is your “Aztec Astronaut stuff

Unicycles and Bowls:

So, you can figure out the rules of the game pretty quickly and then you can sit back and grade them on how they do. Very impressive. (What this has to do with evolution I have no idea, but anyway.)

Those are your top five acts in Totem.

All right, see you there!

Opening
Parallel bar and trampoline
Hoop dance
Rings trio
Clown act
Chinese unicycle and bowls
Foot juggling
Perches

Intermission

Devil sticks
Fixed trapeze duo
Cone juggling

Remember Gurbaksh “G” Chahal, San Francisco’s Own “Secret Millionaire?” Well, Now He’s Crying Over His Busted Ferrari

Friday, July 29th, 2011

Remember Gurbaksh “G” Chahal and all his troubles? Well, if you don’t, watch one-minute of this video from the NBC. Good times.

(Remember when he proudly pointed out his flat-panel TV (“BAM!”) and “great mirror?” And the zebra pelt on the kitchen floor?*)

But now, there’s sadness in his life owing to his slightly older-model Ferrari getting cracked up while in the custody of his Ferrari dealership. Of course, the dealership has offered to fix it up and/or offered to let him buy a newer, unused Ferrari at a higher price, but that’s not good enough for G.

Read all about it via Ryan Tate of Gawker.

Also via Ryan, an excerpt from the FB:

See that “why does this crap always happen to me?”

Does this make “G” the “definition of a douchelord?”

At the Adam Carolla / Danny Bonaduce bachelor party, Key Club L.A. Photo via Anthony Citrano - Click to expand.

Chin up, G!

*Apparently, the people behind the Secret Millionaire show wanted to show a big delta between the lifestyle of his real-life SoMA pad vs. the Tenderloin hovel that he shacked-up in during the filming of the show. Well, some people got carried away with the made-for-TV furnishings. So that’s where the zebra pelt and chandelier came in. Ironically, you might prefer to live in that hovel on Larkin Street – it’s not that bad, right across the street from Homeland Security. Typical Americans watching had no idea that the rent on that supposedly unlivable apartment in the Tenderloin was more than their flyover country mortgage payments…
