Is This the Marissa Mayer / Zack Bogue Cast-Iron Bison Paddock Sign that has “Taken a Beating?”

Wednesday, December 24th, 2014

Here you go:

Marissa Mayer And David Sacks Are Backing San Francisco’s Bison

Bradshaw tells us he later saw the sign a bit worse for wear, having “taken a beating.” Weird. Who dislikes bison?”

And here’s the sign in question, I think. It’s on the east end of the paddock, on JFK in GGP. And it’s cast iron, I think. Pretty indestructible, IMO. It’s the color of iron oxide:

It’s a little bit lighter in color on the left side, but otherwise it looks A-OK to me, condition-wise.

Anyway, I don’t know what “taken a beating” means.

Good Times: Throwing Pieces of Structural Iron Off the Third Floor of John Swett Alternative Elementary School

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

Do people actually get paid to huck heavy pieces of metal off of the top of John Swett Alternative Elementary School on McAllister at sunrise?

People do.

Heck, if they called me up, I’d do it for free, watching them triangles accelerate at 9.8 meters per second until the satisfying crash landing. Boooooonk!

This activity sounds like a pile driver. It’s enough to wake the entire neighborhood on a Saturday morning.

What do these things weigh, 20 pounds? Fire in the hole!

This Fell Street Manhole Cover Has Seen It All Since the 1960s – How Long Will It Last?

Monday, May 17th, 2010

There aren’t many things from the 1960’s that work as well as they day they were made.

When will this person-hole cover near Divisidero wear out?

Born: October 2, 1969. See that, no fudging of the birthdate, it’s right there, for All to see. How refreshing! (The fact is that if you we’re born in 1970 or thereabouts, you’re middle-aged – welcome to the club.)

(It says PG&E on it. Shhhh…..)

How old is San Francisco’s oldest manhole cover? No one knows…
