But yes, they would fly them jets ‘neath the towers of the Golden Gate Bridge.

OMG, Ride the E-Line “Twin Torpedos” for Free This Weekend! Volunteer to be a Temporary Streetcar Docent

Monday, October 1st, 2012

How would you like to volunteer as a docent helping out with the new-school / old-school E-line on October 6-7, 2012?

First, some background about how busy the 415 will be this weekend:

“Looking at what’s scheduled for that weekend, there might not be room in the city for many more people, much less cars. First, there’s the free Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in Golden Gate Park, a three-day event that drew about 800,000 people last year. That Sunday afternoon, the 49ers play the Buffalo Bills at Candlestick Park, while the Giants are hoping for weekend playoff games at AT&T Park, all guaranteed sellouts. About 60,000 people typically attend the Castro Street Fair, scheduled for that Sunday, while thousands more will jam North Beach for the annual Italian Heritage Parade at 12:30 on the same day. A different crowd will probably be at the Burning Man Decompression street fair, also that Sunday afternoon. To add to the fun, two mega cruise ships are expected to dock at Pier 35 over the weekend, disgorging thousands more tourists. Then, of course, there’s Fleet Week, which brings thousands of sailors and as many as a million visitors to the waterfront for the weekend.”

So you’ll be needed to help out all the visitors moving around on the Twin Torpedos, streetcars 1006 and 1008:

“We need several more docents to work the stops along the E-line on October 6 and 7, helping riders find the right platform and providing information about the service. We have docent books prepared by Paul Lucas, so it’s easy to learn what to do. If you’re interested, send us an email and we’ll get back to you.”

Maybe this is the Patriots Jet Team. Maybe this had something to do with San Francisco’s failed and corrupt America’s Cup “World Series.”

Fireworks Over Golden Gate Park a Huge Success – Go Giants! – Soft Thuds Heard for Miles – Ended Before 10 PM

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

[UPDATE: Oh yes, the birds, too - I forgot about them.]

Get up to speed right here on tonight’s surprise fireworks show in the Music Concourse for the benefit of the San Francisco Giants and Major League Baseball.

Per the SFGiants:

“If you’re in The City and you hear fireworks in a minute, don’t be alarmed, it’s just the #SFGiants private World Series Gala at GG Park.”

But, uh oh:

“Seeing complaints from people in SF about the Tuesday night Fireworks. Giants better win the World Series for the city after this one!”

Und:

“Oh apparently it’s some fireworks show for the Giants over GG park? Effing stupid. I’ve never seen a city so obsessed with a sports team.”*

Here’s the video.

Can you hear the chants of, “Let’s go, Giants?”

This show was scheduled to end at 10:25 PM but concern over area NIMBYs pushed things up a half-hour or so.

Refreshing RocketBoat Adds Some Needed Color to San Francisco Bay – 2010 Season is On

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Of course, some people* don’t like you, RocketBoat, but I do. You add color to the bay. You complete me, RB. Thanks for coming back in 2010.

Get all the deets on the Rocket Boat here from sailboat-hating Ken Garcia.  And take a look at the action on YouTube. RocketBoat just might rock your world. Check it:

Came back for a 2nd round and this time we had a party of 7 go on the Rocketboat. That boat kicks ass. It goes about 45 mph and the driver loves to spin donuts.”

Verily.

Now, we’ve all heard the expression “let’s get busy.” Well, this is a boat who gets “biz-zay!” Consistently and thoroughly. Look at RB totally pwning a local yachtsman just the other day:

Even “smart chicks” love the RocketBoat. You will too.

Get all the deets after the jump.

*Local sailboat people disapprove of motor vessels in general, and RocktBoat in particular. RocketBoat, RocketBoat/ It’s not your fault.

San Francisco Enjoys a Lunchtime Skydiving Demonstration, Courtesy of T-Mobile

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

As promised, our corporate overlords at T-Mobile put on a spectacle over Justin Herman Plaza yesterday afternoon. See some photos here and here.

How will Radio Shack (aka “The Shack”) top this today? The Summer NetTogether starts today in Justin Herman, and New York, apparently. Let’s hope local ad firm Butler Shine and Stern doesn’t alienate people with their new campaign. (Remember the one they had before?)

Anyway, T Mobile promised a show and they delivered.

Our Corporate Overlords are Set to Launch 100 Parachutists Today at Noon

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Birth, School, Work, Death – that’s what Life is about, can you dig, man. But our corporate overlords don’t want you to figure that out, so they’re always offering “free” fun events to distract you from the Truth, man. As today, when the T-Mobile phone company, the one with Catherine Zeta-Jones (once again) is providing a lunchtime spectacle over San Francisco that will keep you distracted and on the edge of your seat, so long as you are seated near Justin Herman Plaza, Marina Green Park, Pier 39, or the Moscone Recreation Center:

“Along with fly-by jets and skywriting, 100 skydivers dressed as “unique personalities” will parachute in synchronized formations over San Francisco as a promotion for T-Mobile. The 100 skydivers will land at four locations around The City.”

Here’s a look at preparations near the Ferry Building in Justin Herman Plaza. Everything’s going to be big big big:

….a bunch of small monitors stacked on top of each other. What rip, man!

It’s the TR2010E TechnoRainbow indoor / outdoor monitor system from Toshiba. It’s mesmerizing. So clever, so tricksy.

Enjoy the show, starting at 11:15 AM, but really getting going just after noon.

And maybe you can get a free MyTouch 3G phone from them today, somehow. It will keep you distracted for months and years, or a lifetime, really.

See you there!

Been turned around till I’m upside down
Been all at sea until I’ve drowned
And I’ve felt torture, I’ve felt pain
Just like that film with Michael Caine
I’ve been abused and I’ve been confused
And I’ve kissed Margaret Thatcher’s shoes
And I been high and I been low
And I don’t know where to go
