Street Chess in the Mid-Market: It’s Back, Baby! After a Few Lean Years, Market Street is Back Up to Ten Tables Sometimes

Wednesday, June 12th, 2013

Frisco street chess hasn’t been this vibrant in years.

Things hadn’t been so hot since the Great Street Chess War of 2010, when the traditional location at Fifth and Market got eliminated. Get the deets here from Chris Roberts of the SF Weekly.

And even last year, you wouldn’t necessarily see that much activity.

But we’re in a more active era now, with a noticeable increase just the past few months.

It Takes a Village (of SFPD Cops) to Arrest a Union Square Felon During Christmastime

Monday, December 17th, 2012

Man, the cops are all over the place in and around Union Square these days, the better to protect the all-important holiday shopper.

So that means SFPD vehicles parked all over, as a show of force for newly-arrived felons, including your Mobile Command Centers One, Two, and/or Three, and beat cops just standing around the corner of Fifth and Market answering tourists’ requests about which direction is the Metreon, that kind of thing.

And if you’re a drug dealer, the SFPD will literally tell you to conduct your business a few blocks up Market near Turk, you know, in the Twitterloin containment / enterprise zone, where you belong.

A half-dozen cops, one felon, Market Street betwixt Fifth and Sixth:

Today on KQED-FM at 10:00AM: “Critical Mass, 20 Years Later” – Michael Krasny – Commute Clot Anniv.

Monday, September 24th, 2012

Well, today’s the start of San Francisco Critical Mass Week 2012.

Michael Krasny of KQED Forum will kick things off with a one-hour show on the history of Critical Mass.

And then festivities will end, of course, this Friday with the big 20th Anniversary Ride the evening of September 28th, 2012. (Not that you’d know it from the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition website’s ”Chain of Events” section, where all info about CM* is now censored.)

Suddenly surrounded by bicycles:

All the deets:

“It started with a bike ride in San Francisco on Sept. 25, 1992. About 50 people cycled in a pack along Market Street, hoping to earn some respect from drivers who sometimes ignored them or edged them off the road. They called it the “Commute Clot.” Today it’s known as Critical Mass, a movement that’s spread worldwide. Supporters say it promotes cycling and the rights of bicyclists. But critics say it is illegal, clogs traffic and antagonizes drivers. We talk about Critical Mass’ 20th anniversary, and its effects on the city.

Host: Michael Krasny

Guests:

Chris Carlsson, co-founder of Critical Mass who was part of the first ride on Sept. 25, 1992, and has since participated in Critical Mass rides in Milan, Vancouver and Porto Alegre, Brazil

Hugh D’Andrade, founder of SFCriticalMass.org

Rob Anderson, blogger on transportation issues and author of the blog District 5 Diary

*The SFBC raises money through fees but it also gets mucho dinero directly from SFGov. So that’s why it endorsed Ed Lee for Mayor even though SFBC’s members generally did not and still do not like Ed Lee. Similarly, Chrstina Olague, Mayor Ed Lee’s hand-picked recruit for District 5 Supervisor, gets endorsed over Julian Davis even though SFBC members actually favor JD. The SFBC is basically a quasi-government agency now, so it’s very afraid of seeming to say something negative about certain members of the City Family. It’s also afraid of hurting the chances of its officers someday getting jobs / health care directly with SFGov / SFMTA. Anyway, that’s why the SFBC is basically a SFGov kiss-ass these days. It will lobby San Francisco government, certainly, but that’s about as far as it wants to go. (Think about it – who would the SFMTA endorse for Mayor?)

Brace Yourselves: “GLOBAL FREE PUSSY RIOT DAY” is Coming Friday – Protest at Russian Consulate

Thursday, August 16th, 2012

It’s come to this.

The specific whites of Pacific Heights and Cow Hollow aren’t going to like tomorrow’s international protest one bit.

Not one bit!

“GLOBAL FREE PUSSY RIOT DAY - FRIDAY AUGUST 17th – FreePussyRiot.org

The ‘Free Pussy Riot’ protest is a worldwide response to Russian authorities detaining three young women for performing an anti-Putin song in a cathedral in Moscow in February. Maria Alekhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, and Ekaterina Samucevich are the three women and members of Pussy Riot, a feminist collective punk band known for impromptu performances with a political agenda to promote basic rights, gender equality and the lack of justice involving the powers that be.

The global pussy riot campaign is going to be held in major cities around the world this Friday to urge Putin and Russian authorities for a fair hearing for the girls’ sentencing. With support from celebrities such as Madonna and Pete Townshend, and of Amnesty International the pussy riot has become a movement to show support for these three women and more importantly to show Russian authorities their decision will not go unnoticed.

In San Francisco their are two events being held:

At 3:00 PM on Friday supporters will be meeting at the Russian Consulate 2790 Green Street.
https://www.facebook.com/events/424888970880304/?ref=ts

At 6:30 PM they will be meeting at Justin Herman Plaza.

“As a musician who has spoken out against political figures, I am deeply troubled that the Russian government is punishing its citizens for voicing their opinions through music. Music is an essential tool for voicing opinions about everything from gender to oppression. To outlaw the free expression of these ideas is to embrace tyranny. Letting artists speak is the hallmark of a free society.”

When Oh When Will San Francisco Be Rid of Vaillancourt Fountain? It Riffs Off a Freeway That’s No Longer There

Tuesday, June 12th, 2012

Vaillancourt Fountain was a comment on its former neighbor, the Embarcadero Freeway. But the freeway is all gone, so why are we still stuck with the fountain?

Remember when SFGov shut down this fountain back in 2000 to save on operating costs?

Why not let’s do that again?

San Francisco Forced to Import Republicans for the Great Tea Party of April 14th, 2012 – A Few Hundred All Told

Monday, April 16th, 2012

This is what a crowd of a couple hundred-something people looks like at a tea party in Justin Herman Plaza.

Most of them are from out of town:

Do they kick things off with a prayer and a round from some fifers?

Yes. Yes they do.

Justin Herman Plaza Update: 2011 Had OccupySF, Opposing Bank of America, But 2012 Has “Bank of America Sunday Streets”

2011:

And this was yesterday during the kick-off of “Bank of America Sunday Streets* 2012″

You see, back in 2011, we opposed Bank of America, but now everything’s A-OK, it would seem.

2011 was bad for BofA, but spending a few thousand dollars on Sunday Streets makes up for that, the thinking goes.

“Financial partners include… PG&E, Lennar, Park Merced…”

Oh well.

*Kind of lackluster, actually. People don’t seem to care as much about this event as much anymore. It’s become more kind of a private-public, corporatist, corporate sell-out these days. Anyway, you can see some of its tents on the left and a few cyclists going past the Ferry Building, if you look hard enough.

Come Take the Dell Ultrabook Challenge Today Near the Ferry Building: Meet the Windows Version of the MacBook Air

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

I guess. Actually they were closed forlunch when I passed by. Today they will be in the Marina in the morning and then at Fishermans Wharf starting at 2 PM.

I don’t know, maybe they’ll have some Dell swag for you as you check out their forthcoming XPS 13, which starts at $1000, which sounds a bit high to me but whatever.

It’s On! West Coast Rally for Reproductive Rights Coming January 21st – Justin Herman Plaza, 11 AM – Plus, Those Banners

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Oh, I guess this is why Walk for Life West Coast 2012 isn’t going to happen in or around Justin Herman Plaza this year. It’s because the West Coast Rally for Reproductive Rights will be there instead.

See?

“Activists Respond to Attacks on Women’s Reproductive Rights with January 21st Rally and Banners on Market Street
West Coast Rally for Reproductive Rights Commemorates Roe v. Wade and Celebrates San Francisco Truth-in-Advertising Legislation
  • The 9th Annual Rally for Reproductive Justice takes place January 21st, 2012 at 11 am in Justin Herman Plaza
  • The Rally commemorates Roe v. Wade, raises awareness about abortion access and celebrates San Francisco’s recent truth-in-advertising legislation for clinics
  • Pro-choice banners are flying high on Market Street for the first time in San Francisco’s History
  • The Rally features speakers, live music and will be family friendly, with facepainting and balloon artists, to welcome all who support women”

All the deets are below.

All the deets:

“San Francisco, January 10, 2012— San Francisco gears up for the West Coast Rally for Reproductive Justice, commemorating the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. The rally will be held on January 21, 2012 at 11 am in  Justin Herman Plaza, San Francisco. As banners celebrating a woman’s right to choose fly high on Market Street, the rally will feature speakers from leading women’s rights organizations, like the Silver Ribbon Campaign, NOW, World Can’t Wait, Radical Women, Change.org, The Business of Being Born filmmakers and Slutwalk.  Featured political speakers include State Senator Mark Leno and SF Board President David Chiu. The rally will have music by The Raging Grannies and Ziva Hadar.  Women’s reproductive rights remain under attack, despite the strength of the Democrats in the Senate and under the Obama Administration’s leadership; Bay Area activists and women’s rights supporters are taking a stand. The rally will be held in the space where in years past, members of the pro-life organization Walk for Life  gathered to protest a woman’s right to choose.  This year, BACORR hosts an independent rally, free from interaction with the Walk for Life group.

The controversy surrounding the accessibility of Plan B, the morning after pill, is just the latest in a string of attacks on women’s rights.  The FDA determined that the Teva Pharmaceutical Industries drug Plan B is safe to be sold without a prescription to women of all ages; however, in an unprecedented move, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius overturned the FDA’s decision and blocked over-the-counter access to Plan B  for girls under 17 years old.  Secretary Sebelius’ decision was based on her concern that 11 year old girls will not understand how to use the drug. The limitations on this drug effectively leaves adolescents, victims of incest and  rape in the lurch – subject to the whim of a precarious home environment.  A victim is unable to independently carry out reproductive decisions because of a strictly political, not science-based, decision.

San Francisco is a leader in progressive legislation exemplified by a victory this past October. The Pregnancy Information Disclosure and Protection Ordinance requires accurate advertising from crisis pregnancy centers and was passed by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in a 10-1 vote.

“We are gathering to celebrate our city’s progressive legislation, and the freedoms women have gained since Roe v. Wade,” says MonaLisa Wallace, President, San Francisco NOW. “But the recent attacks on Planned Parenthood and Plan B, as well as the state by state restrictions on abortion ignore science and the well being of women everywhere.”

“We are at a time in our history where women’s reproductive rights are coming under attack on every level, where the church, state, elected officials, and even our own doctors are having a say in what should be a woman’s control and autonomy over her reproductive life.” says MaryAnn Thomas, organizer, World Can’t Wait. “We stand in solidarity with women across the country who have seen their access to safe, respectful abortioncare disappear along with their access to affordable birth control.”

“BACORR partnered with Trust Women to put up pro-choice banners on Market Street,” said Somer Loen, organizer, BACORR. “I am proud to live in a city that supports women, and the banners are an urgent reminder for San Franciscans that reproductive freedom is an essential human right, currently under assault. Opponents of reproductive rights are creating a public health crisis with legislation like H.R. 358 that allows hospitals to refuse life-saving abortions to women. It’s time to stand together to respect women.”

The rally is being organized by the Bay Area Coalition for Our Reproductive Rights (BACORR) and the California chapter of National Organization for Women (NOW).  BACORR initially partnered in 2004 with Planned Parenthood to stand strong in defense of reproductive rights when Walk for Life first came to San Francisco. There was a broad-based response to their anti-woman presence in our city. In years past, the coalition has effectively countered their rally and march.  It also evolved in its scope, tying together the demands of women nationally and internationally.   BACORR stands firm in the belief that we must expand, not limit, access to healthcare and abortion care if women are to actualize their full potential. This is in conjunction with the United Nations determination that legal abortion is a human right and that lack of access to it is a violation of international human rights.

About BACORR
BACORR first formed in the late 1980s to defend Bay Area clinics from Operation Rescue, who were seeking to block clinic access to patrons and workers. BACORR was a rapid response team that protected the clinics from anti-abortion protesters and participated in clinic escorting and clinic defense.  BACORR regrouped in 2004 to counter the Walk for Life and to stand strong in defense of reproductive justice. This year, BACORR supported efforts to pass the Pregnancy Information Disclosure and Protection Ordinance, protested fundraisers for personhood amendment advocates and provided clinic defense to local clinics.

About CA NOW
California NOW was formed to take action to bring women into full participation in every aspect of American political, social and economic life and institutions. California NOW embodies and uses an intersectional analysis that enables each of us to recognize the fact that perceived group membership can make people vulnerable to various forms of bias and because we are simultaneously members of many groups our complex identities can shape the specific way we each experience that bias.”
