Assignment Desk: Call Up AAA Flag & Banner at 431-2950 and Ask About Them Making Both Pro and Anti Abortion Banners

Thursday, January 16th, 2014

Here’s how things look on Market Street these days.

And here’s how things looked a couple years back:

“Milo is masterful but corrupt, parlaying his position as mess officer (in charge of the dining hall) into personal direction of M & M Enterprises, controlling all sorts of goods and services, from fresh eggs to prostitutes. Before long, his business is international; planes arrive daily from such markets as Liberia, London, and Karachi. He deals with everyone except the Russians, eschewing their trade because they are Communists. Nonetheless, he has no problem doing business with America’s primary European enemy, Nazi Germany. Milo even profits from specific battles. When the Allies plan to bomb a highway bridge at Orvieto, Milo arranges to conduct the attack for them. But he also agrees with the Germans to defend the same bridge with antiaircraft fire, bargaining for cost plus six percent from each side, plus a “merit bonus” of $1,000 from the Germans for each plane shot down. Having arranged all the details, Milo has no trouble convincing both sides to furnish their own men and equipment. He thus makes a nice profit by signing his name twice.”

San Francisco Is Being Trolled by the Anti-Abortion People and Here’s the Proof – Plus, What the Banners Look Like

Thursday, January 16th, 2014

All right, let’s pay off on that headline:

Eva Muntean, co-chair of the Walk for Life West Coast said “We are delighted with the publicity our banners have already generated. We urge all people of good will to join us on January 25 …

You see, they want you to call these banners a “hate crime.”

And here’s a banner:

Street Chess in the Mid-Market: It’s Back, Baby! After a Few Lean Years, Market Street is Back Up to Ten Tables Sometimes

Wednesday, June 12th, 2013

Frisco street chess hasn’t been this vibrant in years.

Things hadn’t been so hot since the Great Street Chess War of 2010, when the traditional location at Fifth and Market got eliminated. Get the deets here from Chris Roberts of the SF Weekly.

And even last year, you wouldn’t necessarily see that much activity.

But we’re in a more active era now, with a noticeable increase just the past few months.

It Takes a Village (of SFPD Cops) to Arrest a Union Square Felon During Christmastime

Monday, December 17th, 2012

Man, the cops are all over the place in and around Union Square these days, the better to protect the all-important holiday shopper.

So that means SFPD vehicles parked all over, as a show of force for newly-arrived felons, including your Mobile Command Centers One, Two, and/or Three, and beat cops just standing around the corner of Fifth and Market answering tourists’ requests about which direction is the Metreon, that kind of thing.

And if you’re a drug dealer, the SFPD will literally tell you to conduct your business a few blocks up Market near Turk, you know, in the Twitterloin containment / enterprise zone, where you belong.

A half-dozen cops, one felon, Market Street betwixt Fifth and Sixth:

Don’t click to expand, in fact, shrink it down if you want, but, just saying, there’s always a reason when I post a messed-up filtered photo…

Look for things to get back to normal starting the morning of January 1, 2013…

Today on KQED-FM at 10:00AM: “Critical Mass, 20 Years Later” – Michael Krasny – Commute Clot Anniv.

Monday, September 24th, 2012

Well, today’s the start of San Francisco Critical Mass Week 2012.

Michael Krasny of KQED Forum will kick things off with a one-hour show on the history of Critical Mass.

And then festivities will end, of course, this Friday with the big 20th Anniversary Ride the evening of September 28th, 2012. (Not that you’d know it from the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition website’s ”Chain of Events” section, where all info about CM* is now censored.)

Suddenly surrounded by bicycles:

All the deets:

“It started with a bike ride in San Francisco on Sept. 25, 1992. About 50 people cycled in a pack along Market Street, hoping to earn some respect from drivers who sometimes ignored them or edged them off the road. They called it the “Commute Clot.” Today it’s known as Critical Mass, a movement that’s spread worldwide. Supporters say it promotes cycling and the rights of bicyclists. But critics say it is illegal, clogs traffic and antagonizes drivers. We talk about Critical Mass’ 20th anniversary, and its effects on the city.

Host: Michael Krasny

Guests:

Chris Carlsson, co-founder of Critical Mass who was part of the first ride on Sept. 25, 1992, and has since participated in Critical Mass rides in Milan, Vancouver and Porto Alegre, Brazil

Hugh D’Andrade, founder of SFCriticalMass.org

Rob Anderson, blogger on transportation issues and author of the blog District 5 Diary

*The SFBC raises money through fees but it also gets mucho dinero directly from SFGov. So that’s why it endorsed Ed Lee for Mayor even though SFBC’s members generally did not and still do not like Ed Lee. Similarly, Chrstina Olague, Mayor Ed Lee’s hand-picked recruit for District 5 Supervisor, gets endorsed over Julian Davis even though SFBC members actually favor JD. The SFBC is basically a quasi-government agency now, so it’s very afraid of seeming to say something negative about certain members of the City Family. It’s also afraid of hurting the chances of its officers someday getting jobs / health care directly with SFGov / SFMTA. Anyway, that’s why the SFBC is basically a SFGov kiss-ass these days. It will lobby San Francisco government, certainly, but that’s about as far as it wants to go. (Think about it – who would the SFMTA endorse for Mayor?)

Brace Yourselves: “GLOBAL FREE PUSSY RIOT DAY” is Coming Friday – Protest at Russian Consulate

Thursday, August 16th, 2012

It’s come to this.

The specific whites of Pacific Heights and Cow Hollow aren’t going to like tomorrow’s international protest one bit.

Not one bit!

“GLOBAL FREE PUSSY RIOT DAY - FRIDAY AUGUST 17th – FreePussyRiot.org

The ‘Free Pussy Riot’ protest is a worldwide response to Russian authorities detaining three young women for performing an anti-Putin song in a cathedral in Moscow in February. Maria Alekhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, and Ekaterina Samucevich are the three women and members of Pussy Riot, a feminist collective punk band known for impromptu performances with a political agenda to promote basic rights, gender equality and the lack of justice involving the powers that be.

The global pussy riot campaign is going to be held in major cities around the world this Friday to urge Putin and Russian authorities for a fair hearing for the girls’ sentencing. With support from celebrities such as Madonna and Pete Townshend, and of Amnesty International the pussy riot has become a movement to show support for these three women and more importantly to show Russian authorities their decision will not go unnoticed.

In San Francisco their are two events being held:

At 3:00 PM on Friday supporters will be meeting at the Russian Consulate 2790 Green Street.

At 6:30 PM they will be meeting at Justin Herman Plaza.

“As a musician who has spoken out against political figures, I am deeply troubled that the Russian government is punishing its citizens for voicing their opinions through music. Music is an essential tool for voicing opinions about everything from gender to oppression. To outlaw the free expression of these ideas is to embrace tyranny. Letting artists speak is the hallmark of a free society.”

When Oh When Will San Francisco Be Rid of Vaillancourt Fountain? It Riffs Off a Freeway That’s No Longer There

Tuesday, June 12th, 2012

Vaillancourt Fountain was a comment on its former neighbor, the Embarcadero Freeway. But the freeway is all gone, so why are we still stuck with the fountain?

Remember when SFGov shut down this fountain back in 2000 to save on operating costs?

Why not let’s do that again?

San Francisco Forced to Import Republicans for the Great Tea Party of April 14th, 2012 – A Few Hundred All Told

Monday, April 16th, 2012

This is what a crowd of a couple hundred-something people looks like at a tea party in Justin Herman Plaza.

Most of them are from out of town:

Do they kick things off with a prayer and a round from some fifers?

Yes. Yes they do.

Justin Herman Plaza Update: 2011 Had OccupySF, Opposing Bank of America, But 2012 Has “Bank of America Sunday Streets”

Monday, March 12th, 2012

2011:

And this was yesterday during the kick-off of “Bank of America Sunday Streets* 2012″

You see, back in 2011, we opposed Bank of America, but now everything’s A-OK, it would seem.

2011 was bad for BofA, but spending a few thousand dollars on Sunday Streets makes up for that, the thinking goes.

“Financial partners include… PG&E, Lennar, Park Merced…”

Oh well.

*Kind of lackluster, actually. People don’t seem to care as much about this event as much anymore. It’s become more kind of a private-public, corporatist, corporate sell-out these days. Anyway, you can see some of its tents on the left and a few cyclists going past the Ferry Building, if you look hard enough.
