San Francisco Restaurant Community Comes Together to Help Crime Victim – Benefit at Ragazza January 24th

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

Haighteration has the story this AM about how the San Francisco restaurant community is coming together to help one of its own, someone who is still reeling from a crime committed late last year:

“In late November, a beloved member of the Ragazza staff, and broader San Francisco restaurant community, was the victim of a terrible crime. To help this individual get back on their feet, Ragazza, along with several other establishments, are hosting a fundraiser. All proceeds will benefit the crime victim. Funds will be raised through several sources.”

And check out all the local businesspeople who are contributing, below.

“1. On Monday, January 24, Ragazza will donate 100% of sales proceeds to this cause. For this evening, Ragazza will hold an intimate benefit dinner, with a special menu designed by Chef Sharon Ardiana.  The meal will be served family style, with antipasti, salad, pizza, entree and dessert.  Seatings are at 5:00 pm, 7:00 pm or 9:00 pm.  The cost is $35/person, including wine, excluding gratuity and tax.  As of 1/13/11, the 7pm seating is sold out.  To make a reservation or to be put on the 7pm waiting list, please email Laurie at laurie@aocsf.com.

2. A variety of items will be auctioned off on eBay, between Friday, January 21st and Monday, January 31st. Auction items include special meals at notable San Francisco restaurants, cooking lessons, private meals prepared by Bay Area chefs, art, photography, wine and other items. To see all items up for auction or to bid on an item, please visit this link.

3. You may send a cash donation to benefit the victims of this crime. To do so, please send a check made out to our fiscal sponsor, La Cocina, Inc. Please write Ragazza Fundraiser in the memo line so that your contribution goes directly to our cause. Donations may also be made on the evening of January 24 at the restaurant. For your donation to be tax deductible, it will need to be made via check payable to La Cocina, Inc. Donations may be sent to:

La Cocina

2948 Folsom Street

San Francisco, CA 94110-4028

Note that all auction items and donations made via check to La Cocina, Inc. are tax deductible over the fair market value of the item (in the case of auction items). La Cocina is a registered 501c3 organization.

Full details coming soon, along with links to the eBay bid pages once the auction is live (anticipated to be on Friday, January 21).  Here’s a preview of some of the items we will have available for bid…..

15th Annual Ghirardelli Square Chocolate Festival a Huge Success Under the Pouring Sun

Monday, September 13th, 2010

If you’re into chocolate and free swag, then the 15th Annual Ghirardelli Square Chocolate Festival would have been for you.

The line for a Kara’s Cupcakes mini-cupcake from their iconic truck was just insane on both days. Kara’s was the first exhibitor to run out of goods and it happened fairly quickly. Oh well.

Anyway, see the photos, and take a look at this full trip report from Garky Eats and/or Ewok1993

The wait for Kara’s might have gotten up to 15 minutes for a while there on Sunday. They had a sign denoting the flavors on the truck for part of the time anyway…

Liquid choco with Bailey’s:

And wouldn’t you just love a bangle full of mini-macaroons? Of course the macaroon is The New Cupcake, don’t you know.

See you next year!

15th Annual Ghirardelli Chocolate Festival Continues Today, Sunday, September 12th, 2010

Sunday, September 12th, 2010

Our 15th Annual Ghirardelli Chocolate Festival continues today until 5:00 PM.

Get all the deets about this year’s effort at Chowhound, where you’ll learn how Kara’s Cupcakes, The Cheesecake Guy, Tea-Infused Chocolates and GudFud marshmallows performed yesterday.

So, get on up there to Beach and Larkin where they’ll soon be selling tickets. The SF Romance Travel Examiner(!) hasn’t steered you wrong yet, am I right?

Imagine this says “15th Annual” and it’ll save us both some trouble:

“YOU MAY PURCHASE TICKETS AT THE EVENT AT THE CORNER OF BEACH & LARKIN STREETS BEGINNING AT NOON ON SUNDAY”

See you there.

Top Cheffer Casey Thompson Stars at Ghirardelli Square Chocolate Festival 2009

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Here’s the thing about the 14th Annual Ghirardelli Square Chocolate Festival that just finished up - there’s chocolate everywhere. And what’s nice about it is that there’s no fences or checkpoints or anything. What your $20 gets you is not admission but a cafeteria ticket with 15 checkboxes. So go around and sample what you want. You can get your fill, and if you wanted to, you could go full Augustus Gloop.

It is truly the Land of Chocolate – don’t miss the 15th Annual in 2010 next September.

Famous Chef-testant Casey Thompson lectured on the subject of chocolate waffles or something like that. Look what she has – dark chocolate, the hard stuff:

Here’s how it works – find something that looks appealing and then line up to get a sample. They’ll check your card off and then you can move on. People could spend hours just milling around and noshing and watching the demonstrations, etc…

The whole thing looked exactly like this, from SF Weekly’s Hanna Quevedo.

Best in Show would have to be these colorful Truffle Bars from Sterling Confections. I didn’t actually taste the things, but they look to be packaged well and that’s half the battle when your shopping for a gift, right girlfriend? Sterling can pick up the slack after the recent Joseph Schmidt Confections (“The Soul is For Hire, and They’ve Sold the Heart”) sell out.

Things got a little frenetic when they started throwing gelato containers off the back of the refrigerator truck. It was Brother Against Brother:

See you next year!

Kara’s Cupcakes Shows Its Pride in San Francisco

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Kara’s Cupcakes, the San Francisco version of Sprinkles, apparently, went all out to get into Pride 2008 the other day.

Check out the locations in the Marina and Ghirardelli Square to see the brainchild of Kara Lind and maybe you yourself will catch cupcake fever, just like all the rest. Or get a gift card or T-shirt perhaps?

Will you enjoy the experience as much as these two, who just happened to be caught in this (somewhat crudely Photoshopped) moment of sweet rapture by a roving photojournalist? You can only hope.

See you there.
