SAN FRANCISCO, CA (May 14, 2016)—With a blizzard of red confetti, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) opened its doors to the public today, May 14. Opening Day festivities were attended by local dignitaries, members of the Bay Area arts community and the general public. After the program, the first visitors were welcomed to the new museum by SFMOMA staff and leadership.

The program included remarks by Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, Mayor Edwin Lee, SFMOMA Board Chairman Charles Schwab, SFMOMA Board President Bob Fisher and SFMOMA’s Helen and Charles Schwab Director Neal Benezra. The museum distributed more than 5,000 free timed tickets for Opening Day to the public. Surrounding cultural institutions including the Museum of the African Diaspora, the Contemporary Jewish Museum, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Children’s Creativity Museum and many more throughout the Yerba Buena Cultural District also offered free admission and programming to celebrate the return of SFMOMA to the neighborhood.

“After years of planning and construction, it feels terrific to welcome visitors back to the museum,” said Neal Benezra. “With our goal of providing more art to more people, now and for generations to come, we are excited to share the new museum experience we have created that features the distinguished Doris and Donald Fisher Collection, new works gifted or promised to us by 230 generous donors and the Pritzker Center for Photography which deepens our commitment to the medium.”

SFMOMA, which opened today with 19 inaugural exhibitions, underwent a three-year transformation to add a 10-story expansion designed by international architecture firm Snøhetta that nearly triples its gallery space, allowing the museum to show more of its exceptional collection of modern and contemporary art. With free admission for guests ages 18 and younger and 45,000 square feet of free public space, SFMOMA is more open to the community than ever before.

“Today, with the opening of this gorgeous museum expansion, San Francisco affirms our city’s place as a global leader of art and culture,” said Congresswoman Pelosi. “The new SFMOMA is a manifestation of our city’s deep respect for creativity, and it embodies the spirit and the generosity of the entire Bay Area Community. For that, we are very proud, and very thankful indeed.”

“San Francisco is a city of big ideas, and SFMOMA is a really big idea—and now, a big reality,” said Mayor Lee. “Not only is the new SFMOMA a place to showcase innovative art, culture and education initiatives, but it is a piece of art itself in the Yerba Buena Art District. The museum is a major draw for visitors, residents, families and youth from around the world, and its contribution to the Bay Area economy will now grow significantly with its new expansion.”

SFMOMA OPENING DAY EVENTS

SFMOMA’s Opening Day began with street performers on Howard Street including entertainment by the Circus Center, SFJAZZ High School All Stars, the San Francisco Youth Ballet Ribbon Dancers and We Talk Chalk.

After remarks, at the museum’s new entrance on Howard Street, the speakers and architect Craig Dykers, founding partner of Snøhetta, ceremonially opened the museum by pressing a large red button with the new SFMOMA logo on it, releasing a blizzard of red confetti from the roof of the new museum and adjacent buildings. The Golden State Warriors Aftershock Drumline played while SFMOMA staff members in red shirts paraded with large red balloons. Ribbon dancers from the San Francisco Youth Ballet led the first visitors into the building.|

Free admission on Opening Day was made possible in part by PG&E, a partner in making the new SFMOMA a model for energy efficiency for art museums through participation in the Step Up and Power Down and Savings by Design programs, The Yerba Buena Community Benefits District and the museum’s Premier Sponsors Bank of America and Cadillac.

SFMOMA HOURS AND ADMISSION

SFMOMA is open to the public seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Labor Day. Free public spaces open at 9 a.m. daily. The museum hosts extended hours on Thursdays until 9 p.m., giving visitors the opportunity to enjoy exhibitions and programs in the evening.

Annual membership begins at $100, and members enjoy unlimited free admission (with advance reservation). Adult admission to SFMOMA is $25 and admission for seniors 65 years and older is $22. Admission for visitors ages 19 through 24 is $19. SFMOMA provides free admission to all visitors 18 and younger, furthering its goal of building the next generation of art lovers.

SUPER BOWL 50 CELEBRATION Kicks Off Sept 10th – ELLIE GOULDING AND TRAIN Play Justin Herman Plaza – Free Concert

Sunday, August 9th, 2015

At 4:30 PM on Thursday, September 10th, 2015 you can head over to Justin Herman Plaza to see Ellie Goulding and Train perform live.

Hey, you know who’s hosting Super Bowl 50? That’s right, “the San Francisco Bay Area” is. (Shhh. Don’t tell our SFGov City Family about that.)

Speaking of which, SFGov is probably looking forward to getting some national attention for something other than the shooting of Kathryn Steinle.

All the deets:

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10

NBC’S FOOTBALL NIGHT IN AMERICA KICKS OFF SEASON AT GILLETTE STADIUM
NBC/NFL Network Special on Thursday, Sept. 10, 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. ET
Precedes NFL Kickoff Game:
PITTSBURGH STEELERS vs. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

The NFL kicks off both its 96th season and the season-long celebration of Super Bowl
50 with “2015 NFL KICKOFF PRESENTED BY HYUNDAI” – 7:30 PM ET Thursday,
September 10, it was announced Sunday night during NBC’s national broadcast of the
annual NFL/Hall of Fame Game. Festivities will take place in both New England, home
of the Super Bowl XLIX champion Patriots, and the San Francisco Bay Area, host of
Super Bowl 50.

Celebrations will begin in San Francisco with a free concert featuring multi-platinum
singer-songwriter ELLIE GOULDING and San Francisco’s own Grammy Award-winning
band TRAIN live at Justin Herman Plaza across from the historic Ferry Building. The
musical performances and activations in San Francisco are part of the year-long On
The Fifty campaign dedicated to celebrating the Super Bowl and commemorating Super
Bowl 50.

Performances by Goulding and Train will be featured in simulcast coverage of a 60-
minute pregame show from New England 7:30 – 8:30 PM ET on NBC and NFL
Network. The live pregame broadcast also will be available via NFL Mobile from
Verizon.

The concert and pregame show lead into the season opener between the Pittsburgh
Steelers and Patriots at Gillette Stadium (NBC, NBC Sports Live Extra on desktop and
tablet, Westwood One Radio Sports, 8:30 PM ET).

This is the 14th consecutive Kickoff celebration to start the season and the 11th time the
NFL has saluted the Super Bowl champions with the opening game in their stadium on
a Thursday in primetime. As part of the Kickoff events leading up to Super Bowl XL ten
years ago, the NFL incorporated musical performances from Los Angeles (home to the
first Super Bowl), Detroit (host of Super Bowl XL) and New England (which won Super
Bowl XXXIX).

Television’s most-watched studio show, NBC’s Football Night in America, will be live onsite
in New England.

Fans nationwide will participate in Kickoff festivities leading up to the season’s first
games. For example, in Chicago the Bears will host the “2015 Super Bears Shuffle 5K”
at Soldier Field, while Baltimore’s Inner Harbor will be home to the “Ravens Kickoff
Party” at Power Plant Live. In Pittsburgh, the Steelers will host the “Gatorade-Steelers
5K” at Heinz Field benefiting the Art Rooney Scholarship Fund. These are just a few
examples of the many ways teams and fans are getting back to football.

2015 NFL KICKOFF will be produced by RICKY KIRSHNER, the Executive Producer of
the Super Bowl pregame and halftime shows, and directed by GREGG GELFAND.
In addition to presenting sponsor Hyundai, top tier sponsors for the NFL’s Kickoff
platform include Bridgestone, Bud Light, McDonalds, Microsoft, Pepsi, Snickers,
Verizon and Visa.

game may apply for credentials through the Patriots.

Captain Paul Miyamoto Kicks Off His Campaign for San Francisco Sheriff on the steps of City Hall

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

Luke Thomas of Fog City Journal has thoroughly covered Captain Paul Miyamoto’s campaign kickoff on the steps of City Hall yesterday.

So check out his report on the now-hot race to become your sheriff for the next decade or two.

Seems like a big turnout to me:

All the deets:

“Miyamoto Brings Unmatched Experience to Sheriff’s Race

Paul Miyamoto Announces Candidacy for Sheriff; Cites Key Endorsements and 15 Years in the Department

San Francisco, CA – Captain Paul Miyamoto announced his candidacy for San Francisco Sheriff today before supporters on the steps of City Hall. Miyamoto is the only candidate for Sheriff with experience at every level and in every division of the Sheriff’s Department.

“I’m running for Sheriff because the people of San Francisco deserve a Sheriff’s Department that is free from politics and political game playing,” said Miyamoto. “Law enforcement responsibilities should not be used as a political stepping stones or political maneuvers. I offer 15 years of law enforcement service to the people of this great city and I humbly ask for your vote because this Department needs serious leadership. We need experience not politics.”

Captain Miyamoto also has extensive management experience at the SF Sheriff’s Department, spending the past two years leading and directly implementing inmate rehabilitation programs. He was directly responsible for creating the Sheriff’s Department’s Field Training Manual, passing on crucial knowledge from his vast experiences in the field to his fellow deputies.

As Sheriff, Captain Miyamoto plans to dedicate his service to public safety by continuing to follow through and improve upon the innovative rehabilitation programs brought upon by Sheriff Michael Hennessey. He plans to ensure the effective re-integration of former inmates to make a positive and safe impact within the San Francisco community.

He stated: “In the coming months, I hope to talk with voters about keeping our neighborhoods safe in the face of dwindling resources. It will take all of us working together to promote an efficient and independent Sheriff’s Department, free from politics, with an eye towards improved professional operations.”

“I’m a Chinese and Japanese-American, but at home I eat Filipino food,” joked Miyamoto, whose wife is of Filipino descent. For Captain Miyamoto, serving the diverse population of San Francisco is steadfastly at the core of the family business. He met his wife LeeAnn in 1996 while both were serving as SF Sheriff’s deputies. His father, Phillip, served as a judge for 30 years in the State Court of Appeals. Mother Ella has been a longtime volunteer at the Coleman Advocates for Children & Youth in San Francisco. Together with his wife, Captain Miyamoto takes great pride and heart in raising their brood of 5 young children, ages 9, 7 and triplets 3 in the city of San Francisco.

Captain Miyamoto grew up in San Francisco, leaving the city only to earn his Bachelor’s degree in History from the University of California at Davis. For over a decade, he has been a regular member of the SFPD’s Lion Dance team performing at the annual SF Chinese New Year Parade. Paul was joined today by the White Crane Lion Dancers, one of the most prestigious Chinese New Year dancing companies.

Miyamoto has been endorsed by Former State Senator Quentin Kopp, Supervisor Sean Elsbernd, Former Supervisor Bevan Dufty, Former Director of the Department of Emergency Management Vicki Hennessy, Former Chief of Police Dr. Anthony Ribera, and the San Francisco Deputy Sheriffs’ Association”

Captain Paul Miyamoto Kicks Off His Campaign for Sheriff of San Francisco on June 28th at City Hall

Friday, June 24th, 2011

All I know about the race to become the next Sheriff of San Francisco is that the slogan “Experience, Not Politics” is aimed directly at District 5 Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi.

Otherwise, I don’t know a thing, I have nothing to offer on this topic.

Anyway, here’s the kickoff announcement for Captain Paul:

Wow, a Monstrous Turnout This Morning for the Dennis Herrera for Mayor Campaign Kickoff in the Western Addition

Saturday, June 4th, 2011

Well this was part of the crowd what turned out for Dennis Jose Herrera this AM at the African American Art & Culture Complex on Fulton. Hundreds, certainly, were on hand, rivaling the crowds that routinely show up for Senator Leland Yee.

(Do any of the rest of the other candidates bring out people like this? If so, do tell.)

Here are former Supervisor Jake McGoldrick, Chairman of the California Democratic Party Art Torres, and Supervisor Scott Wiener on hand to warm up the crowd:

And here are some quotes from this morning:

Last Night’s One-Year Anniversary Party for The Bay Citizen a Huge Success, As Far As I Know

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

[Oh, here we go, it’s the Citizen of Tomorrow Awards, just posted.]

Now, the problem I had last night was being too ambitious, thinking I could drop by the First Birthday Celebration of The Bay Citizen and then hustle it uphill to the Specfic Whites neighborhood by nine-ish, thinking that this year’s party would be like last year’s, you know, the one they had in the Twitterloin. That one was off the hook.

Anyway, here it is at the stated 8:00 PM starting time. (A dozen people to park your car, but only one to check you into the place.)

(Why, yes, Terra _is_ 200 feet away from a bridge and two miles away from a tunnel – why do you ask?)

And here are your food trucks. (Everything seems to taste better when it’s from a truck, non?)

I guess things got going later in the evening. But I’ll tell you, if you skipped the first hour of last year’s soiree, which was off the hook, you would have missed a lot.

The good thing is that The Bay Citizen produced, as designed, a lot of good stuff the past year.

Anyway, Bon Anniversaire, The Bay Citizen.

SFMR11: Campaign HQ Kickoff for Senator Leland Yee a Huge Success – Hundreds on Hand at 710 Van Ness – Our Next Mayor?

Saturday, May 7th, 2011

[UPDATE: Dan Schreiber has the deets.]

This was the scene, or part of the scene upstairs, at the new Leland Yee for Mayor of San Francisco Headquarters on the corner of Turk and Van Ness.*

They’re claiming 500 souls were there this AM – I had to leave early so I don’t know – but nobody turns out crowds in San Francisco the way Leland does, that’s for sure .

And here’s a shot from later in the day from David Elliot Lewis:

So, you multiply the hundreds of people times the level of enthusiasm and the product is unmatched so far in this mayoral race.

Bon courage, Leland Yee.
