Well it did to me, as I was rolling by.
Now I’m not sure.
As seen on Divisadero betwixt Fulton and McAllister:

Hey, did they let KKKatie out of the clink?
Hey, isn’t the Western Addition an especially bad place for anything resembling the letters KKK being posted with letters a yard high?
You know, in light of Redevelopment and the rich, white, homeowning North of Panhandle Homeowner’s Association (NoPNA)?
Just asking?

I thought you all were on top of this sitch.
What’s your long-term plan, DPR? Oh, I know, give you all more money. But if that’s not going to happen, what if we just take this whole statue thing out? Would you like that DPR?

Anyway, I think KKKatie is still in the hoosegow, but SFNOB(?) and cat-face have taken over the reigns…

It goes back and forth, but lately, RPD has been in the game.
(Perhaps local real estate interests have the ear of the powers that be these days.)
Here’s what 2011, 2010, 2010, and 2010 looked like.
And this here is the sitch a third of the way through 2012:

Looks fine to me.
That’s the update.
Leaving you will a gallery of older graffiti:

Last I heard, KKKatey is still in jail, right? So who’s messing up this giant statue now? Why don’t we just give it back if we’re just going to abandon it to the East End Boys and girls with their makers and spray paint and whatnot?
Oh, I guess we ourselves built it, but maybe we should move it to a place where won’t serve as a graffiti beacon?

Look at this, Teddy Roosevelt visited the west end of Golden Gate Park back in the day, just south of the NoPA, west of the EaPA, and north of the SoPA.
See?

What would Teddy say if he could see this statue in the state its in now?
I mean, he spent time traveling here when he could have been in Africa killing ever more elephants, right?

Oh well…

Appears as if ORFN has gotten a few licks in on our iconic William McKinley statue in the east end of Golden Gate Park.
See?

Here’s some history ‘n stuff:
“Well it’s been a back-and-forth between San Francisco’s Arts Commission / Recreation and Park Department and our local graffiti artists/taggers down in the Golden Gate Park Panhandle.
This east-end statue has had all kinds of anti-graffiti coatings applied, but to no avail. Here’s the history, complete with before and after photos.
The newest additions appear to say, “KKKattie” or somethingund “All this means nothing.”
Now, would you pay something like $10K four figures for these scribblings? Well, guess what, tax and fee payer, you just did.
As it looks today. This fetching couple tried to make the best of things:

Flags are lowered about town today for Robert Byrd, the U.S. Senator who favored any and all bridges to nowhere (provided that Nowhere began or ended in the state of West Virginia.) Now, let’s hear from Bill Clinton:
“They mention that he once had a fleeting association with the Ku Klux Klan, and what does that mean? I’ll tell you what it means,” Clinton said. “He was a country boy from the hills and hollows of West Virginia. He was trying to get elected.”
O.K., but wasn’t it Robert Byrd who created and signed up the entire chapter? Yes, actually. Are all “country boy[s] from the hills and hollows of West Virginia” Klan members? No, actually. Not even back during WWII.
The scene today and last Saturday:

Oh, and speaking of WWII, what about this?
“I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side … Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.”
Now, I’m not sure when Bob Byrd made that statement but it was some time during that war when black pilots in propeller planes were taking on German jets over Europe. Is that why he boycotted WWII?
And, as far as “trying to get elected” is concerned, the only election he won during his “fleeting” association with the KKK was the Kleagle office of the chapter he started.
When you’re 12-stepping away from your past, you need to come clean. Otherwise it doesn’t work.
So, Why are We Lowering Our Flags Today for Super Cracker Senator Robert Byrd?
Oh well.
