Here’s the Proof that the Real Estate Interests of the 94117 Have Given Up on the Mickinley Statue Fence in the Panhandle

Thursday, March 6th, 2014

I’ll tell you, I don’t know why local real estate interests have such sway over what goes on in the Golden Gate Park Panhandle, but that’s the way things are.

And I’ll tell you further, I don’t know why local real estate interests ganged up on the mostly harmless Panhandle Bandshell, but they did, oh well. So that’s the background.

These days, the Eye of Sauron has fixed its gaze upon the east end, upon the McKinley Statue. It wants “period-appropriate fencing” around the whole deal, like this:

As you might remember, there was a big push for The Fence last year, detailed here.

But if you’re trying to get popular support for an iron fence, you have to leave the graffiti on and not even try to clean things up until you get your goddam fence, right?

So the above shows how things looked in the autumn of 2013. I allege that the people who wanted (and still want!) the fence decided to not clean things up in order to better make the case for the fence.

Anywho, the fence concept got put on the back burner late last year, obvs, so this is how the statue looks these days, more or less:

Postulation: The People Who Want a Fence Around the McKinley Statue in the Panhandle Have Stopped Cleaning Up Its Graffiti

Tuesday, November 26th, 2013

You see, because they’re wanting to make the case for putting up a fence, right?

So, it’s better to leave the graffiti up until our City Family gets what it wants, right?

We’re through the looking glass, people!

The Current State of the Graffiti on the Golden Gate Park Panhandle McKinley Statue – Fence Coming Soon?

Friday, November 15th, 2013

And actually, there’s a bit more on this statue since this shot was taken a few days ago.

You know, if I wanted to put a fence up around this statue, I’d probably stop cleaning up the graffiti until I got my fence, just saying.

Divisadero Corridor NoPA Western Addition Update: Does This Large Graffito Look Like “KKK” to You? Well, It Does to Me

Thursday, January 3rd, 2013

Well it did to me, as I was rolling by.

Now I’m not sure.

As seen on Divisadero betwixt Fulton and McAllister:

Hey, did they let KKKatie out of the clink?

Hey, isn’t the Western Addition an especially bad place for anything resembling the letters KKK being posted with letters a yard high?

You know, in light of Redevelopment and the rich, white, homeowning North of Panhandle Homeowner’s Association (NoPNA)?

Just asking?

Hey Park and Rec! You’re Losing the McKinley Statue Graffiti Battle Again, Just So You Know – Long Term Plan?

Wednesday, August 15th, 2012

I thought you all were on top of this sitch.

What’s your long-term plan, DPR? Oh, I know, give you all more money. But if that’s not going to happen, what if we just take this whole statue thing out? Would you like that DPR?

Anyway, I think KKKatie is still in the hoosegow, but SFNOB(?) and cat-face have taken over the reigns…

Well, It Appears That Rec and Park is Getting the Upper Hand Against Graffiti on the McKinley Statue

Thursday, June 28th, 2012

It goes back and forth, but lately, RPD has been in the game.

(Perhaps local real estate interests have the ear of the powers that be these days.)

Here’s what 2011, 2010, 2010, and 2010 looked like.

And this here is the sitch a third of the way through 2012:

Looks fine to me.

That’s the update.

Why Don’t We Give Back the McKinley Statue We’ve Abandoned? A Minas Morgul of Graffiti in the Panhandle

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Last I heard, KKKatey is still in jail, right? So who’s messing up this giant statue now? Why don’t we just give it back if we’re just going to abandon it to the East End Boys and girls with their makers and spray paint and whatnot?

Oh, I guess we ourselves built it, but maybe we should move it to a place where won’t serve as a graffiti beacon?

Look at this, Teddy Roosevelt visited the west end of Golden Gate Park back in the day, just south of the NoPA, west of the EaPA, and north of the SoPA.

See?

What would Teddy say if he could see this statue in the state its in now?

I mean, he spent time traveling here when he could have been in Africa killing ever more elephants, right?

Local Misunderstood Graffiti Artist KKKatie is Still in Jail, Right? So Who’s Marking Up Our McKinley Statue Now?

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

Appears as if ORFN has gotten a few licks in on our iconic William McKinley statue in the east end of Golden Gate Park.

Here’s some history ‘n stuff:

“Well it’s been a back-and-forth between San Francisco’s Arts Commission / Recreation and Park Department and our local graffiti artists/taggers down in the Golden Gate Park Panhandle.

This east-end statue has had all kinds of anti-graffiti coatings applied, but to no avail. Here’s the history, complete with before and after photos.

The newest additions appear to say, “KKKattie” or somethingund All this means nothing.”

Now, would you pay something like $10K four figures for these scribblings? Well, guess what, tax and fee payer, you just did.

As it looks today. This fetching couple tried to make the best of things:

Why are We Lowering Our Flags Today for Super Cracker Senator Robert Byrd?

Monday, July 5th, 2010

Flags are lowered about town today for Robert Byrd, the U.S. Senator who favored any and all bridges to nowhere (provided that Nowhere began or ended in the state of West Virginia.) Now, let’s hear from Bill Clinton:

They mention that he once had a fleeting association with the Ku Klux Klan, and what does that mean? I’ll tell you what it means,” Clinton said. “He was a country boy from the hills and hollows of West Virginia. He was trying to get elected.”

O.K., but wasn’t it Robert Byrd who created and signed up the entire chapter? Yes, actually. Are all “country boy[s] from the hills and hollows of West Virginia” Klan members? No, actually. Not even back during WWII.

The scene today and last Saturday:

Oh, and speaking of WWII, what about this?

“I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side … Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.”

Now, I’m not sure when Bob Byrd made that statement but it was some time during that war when black pilots in propeller planes were taking on German jets over Europe. Is that why he boycotted WWII?

And, as far as “trying to get elected” is concerned, the only election he won during his “fleeting” association with the KKK was the Kleagle office of the chapter he started.

When you’re 12-stepping away from your past, you need to come clean. Otherwise it doesn’t work.

So, Why are We Lowering Our Flags Today for Super Cracker Senator Robert Byrd?

Oh well.

Golden Gate Park Panhandle McKinley Statue Once Again Marred by Graffiti
