Does Chinese New Year Parade “Organizer” Rose Pak Take Ten Percent Off the Top from Corporate Sponsors?

Monday, January 28th, 2013

I don’t know.

I mean, her luxury condo south of Market was only partly subsidized, right? And she doesn’t really have a job job. And I don’t think the Chinese consulate has ever 1099′ed her for the “consulting” work she does / did for it.

So lookie here to see what those gambling houses in Reno and Las Vegas have to pay to participate in the 2013 event:

So Rose Pak is a guaranteed winner and the “Chinese community” she claims to represent is a guaranteed loser, assuming that advertising works and assuming that The House Always Wins, which is does.

Couldn’t somebody else “organize” this parade?

And maybe not do the drunk mafia grandma routine every year?

Your Political Theatre of the Day: Senator Leland Yee, the Current Front-Runner in the Race for Mayor, Marches on City Hall

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

Your State Senator Leland Yee marched down Van Ness with an army of supporters this afternoon.

They went all the way to City Hall to turn in the signatures required for his election as Mayor of San Francisco.

Like this:

And here’s what the fuss was all about – thousands of signatures:

(Oh, and apparently, not necessarily all of the 30,000 signatures Run Ed Run has are real signatures. That would explain a lot as, man, valid signatures are hard to get, or at least they were when I tried getting them back in the day, back in the aughts.)

Rounding Polk to come up the steps of City Hall:

And down into the catacombs to hand off the boxes:

And then a chat with KTVU in front of Dumbledore’s Army.

It went a little like this.

The deadline for candidates is July 28th, so look forward to more activity in the basement of City Hall…

Leland Yee First to 10,000 Valid Signatures
Yee’s grassroots strength evident in nomination petition drive

SAN FRANCISCO – Senator Leland Yee, accompanied by California Nurses, Sierra Club members and campaign volunteers, turned in enough signatures today at City Hall to become the first mayoral candidate to reach 10,000 valid signatures – the benchmark set by the Department of Elections for qualifying to be a candidate without paying a $5,000 filing fee.

“Today’s achievement is a clear indicator of the strength of our campaign,” said Yee. “We have collected more signatures in less time than any other campaign through a grassroots effort of hundreds and hundreds of volunteers. I am proud of our volunteers and our campaign team”

“I have always believed that the greatest test of strength for any candidate is their ability to reach out and speak directly to voters,” said Yee. “I want to personally thank all the San Francisco voters who took the time to speak with our volunteers and sign our nominating petitions. I am looking forward to the next stage of our campaign and continuing to talk with voters about improving our public schools, our environment, and our economy.”

With the submission of today’s batch of 4,200 signatures, the Yee campaign has turned in nearly 14,000 signatures. It is expected that the total valid amount will easily surpass 10,000. As of Friday morning, no other mayoral campaign had even reached the 5,000 signature level.

“This drive is far different than collecting on-line petitions or even standing in front of a supermarket collecting signatures from passersby,” said Yee campaign manager Jim Stearns. “The rules set by the Department of Elections constitute a tough test for declared candidates, and I’m proud that our team has passed that test with flying colors.”

The stringent validity rules set by the Department of Elections require each signature to be from a registered San Francisco voter, and for each circulator of a petition to also be a registered voter. In addition, no signer can also have signed for another mayoral candidate.

In addition to the key endorsements of the California Nurses Association and the Sierra Club, Yee has also gained the support the San Francisco Building and Construction Trades Council, Laborers International Union, and the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, among others.

Yee immigrated to San Francisco at the age of 3. His father, a veteran, served in the US Army and the Merchant Marine, and his mother was a local seamstress. Yee graduated from the University of California – Berkeley, then earned a Ph.D. in Child Psychology, and later served in various mental health and school settings. He and his wife, Maxine, have raised four children who all attended San Francisco public schools. Yee has served in the State Legislature, Board of Supervisors and Board of Education.

Look What I Got My Sweetie for Valentine’s: A $100 Car Remote Jammer – Now She Can Break Into Cars Easily!

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

The KTVU is all over This New Issue of Concern:

SPECIAL REPORT: Hackers* Turn Car Thieves With Keyless Locks

So, what a $100 handheld 315 Mhz Wireless Remote Key / Security Jammer / Code Scanner can do for you, at the very least, is allow you to prevent some loser’s car from locking up for the night, dig? Then, after watching the pigeon walk away, you can simply open the car doors and trunk and then collect all the sweet sweet booty inside.

Jamming seems a lot simpler than code scanning, non?

Anyway, this is what KTVU is ascared of showing you. From China With Love:

My funny Valentine is delighted – she’s gotten two Kate Spades and $5000 worth of travelers’ checks so far since Feb 14th. Really, it’s the gift that keeps on giving.

Hurray!

But please remember, “this product is a supplementary tool to unlock, and can only be taken as friends locksmith studies.” So, don’t actually steal anything using this device that’s made exclusively for stealing things.

*Wouldn’t really call somebody who uses a simple jamming device a “hacker,” but that’s just me.

“Note: This product is a supplementary tool to unlock, and can only be taken as friends locksmith studies. Please comply with related laws and regulations.

Supervisorial Candidates Forum Hosted by The Recording Academy a Huge Success at Yoshi’s on Fillmore

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

All you need to know about last night’s all-district candidates forum at Yoshi’s San Francisco is right here, courtesy of Ian S. Port.

Rebecca Prozan responding to a query from Jane Kim:

1. This was a “fun” event, in that the candidates’ names were pulled out of a snare drum and then they got time signals from a dinging triangle. A bit twee if you ask me, but it seemed apropropriate given the crowd and the nature of the event.

2. Speaking of which, there was a good turnout, with the lower level of Yoshi’s biggest room almost filled to capacity.

3. I understand how there needs to be a viability cutoff – I mean Big Entertainment would like all the candidates to swear fealty of course, but you can’t have 50 people on stage, right? (In a couple of years, we’ll have six races and who-knows-how-many candidates, right?) However, it’s not clear to me what the cutoff standards were. There were no candidates on stage from District Two, for instance. Presumably, leading viers Janet Reilly and Mark Farrell blew off the questionnaire, leaving that to Kat Anderson and Abraham Simmons. Now, both of them applied to The Recording Academy but neither wound up gracing the stage last night. Additionally, bona fide D6 candidate Anna Conda was left wondering what the deal is, man.

4. I left just after the intra-district candidate-on-candidate queries began. (Not sure what the point is of having a D6 candidate question one from D8 at last night’s love-fest, but whatever.) But as far as the intros (complete with musical accompaniment) were concerned, Malia Cohen was the standout. (She finished up way before the triangle had a chance to ding. Bonus.) Rafael Mandelman (Mandelman! Mandelman!) also did well, speaking naturally and name-checking The Death of Fun,* but, OTOH, Debra Walker seemed to be reading notes, as if at a high school debate. JMO.

Energy, energy, energy from Malia Cohen:

This is a new kind of deal for me, to see Big Entertainment take this approach. I’m thinking that this event will, as designed, affect how our Board of Supes deals with nightclubs and similar whatnots  in 2011 and 2012.

Supporting Local Music: The Recording Academy Invites Supervisorial to Candidates Forum September 27

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

[UPDATE: District 6 candidate Anna Conda takes issue with the viability test applied by The Recording Academy (our local Grammy people, basically, it seems) for the Candidate Forum. See Comments.]

Entertainment = $$$ for San Francisco. That’s the message the San Francisco Chapter of The Recording Academy is putting out today, that’s their thing.

So, if you’re running for Supervisor this year, you all ought to show up at the Candidate Forum at Yoshii’s West on Fillmore and swear allegiance to the local entertainment industry.

Check it:

“The Recording Academy®, San Francisco Chapter announced today the launch of a sustained advocacy campaign to raise awareness of the value that the music and entertainment industry have on the economic and cultural vibrancy of the San Francisco Bay Area. The campaign’s goal is to grow this important sector by building a coalition of industry stakeholders, developing public policy strategies with elected officials, and commissioning an economic impact study.”

O.K. then.

Teal Wicks and Kendra Kassebaum are sure to included in San Francisco State University’s “Entertainment Impact Study”

Jerry Brown Throws Down: He’s Already Accepted Ten Debate / Town Hall Invites

Monday, June 28th, 2010

California Attorney General Jerry Brown can’t abide billionaires like Meg Whitman trying to buy elections, or something like that, so he’s on a tear, once again, this afternoon. Remember when Jerry Brown issued a challenge to his Republican opponent  in the 2010 gubernatorial race?

Well, it looks like he’s not waiting for her.

Brown Accepts 10 Debate Invitations, Calls on Whitman to Meet Face-to-Face

For Immediate Release
June 28, 2010

Oakland – Gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown today announced that he has accepted invitations to 10 debates or town halls around California, all sponsored by independent organizations interested in an open and honest campaign for Governor.

“We are only a few days into the general election campaign, and already our airwaves have been overrun with millions in misleading and deceptive attack ads,” Brown said. “The people of California deserve better. They deserve to see their choices for Governor stand side-by-side and honestly discuss the challenges facing our state.”

The morning after his victory in the Democratic primary, Brown proposed that he and Republican nominee Meg Whitman hold 10 joint town hall appearances around the state to discuss job creation, schools and the state’s budget mess and to answer questions from voters. Whitman refused Brown’s invitation to those jointly-planned events, but public interest groups and news organizations from around the state have stepped forward to offer the people a chance to see their candidates in person.

“Partisan bickering and attack-dog politics have created an awful mess in Sacramento, and I think Meg and I now have an opportunity to change the tenor of politics in California by conducting a responsible campaign that shows the politicians that there is a better way to do
business,” Brown said.

“Every one of these debates is hosted by a credible organization, guaranteeing a fair and open forum,” Brown continued. “There is no reason not to participate, no reason not to say what we really mean, and show the voters who we are.”

“I am calling on Meg Whitman to treat voters with the respect they deserve. It’s time to step out from behind consultant-scripted commercials full of falsehoods and distortions and debate.”

The two campaigns have received many formal requests for debates at locations around the state. Brown has agreed to ten, several others remain under active consideration. Brown accepted invitations for joint appearances from the following outlets, assuming reasonable terms that provide for open and fair discussion can be negotiated with the Republican nominee:
