Let’s Hope Tonight’s Official SFPD Motorcycle Motorcade Wasn’t for Larry King

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Drivers getting too close to tonight’s noisy official SFPD motorcade were likely to get a Harley Davidson all up in their grill.

Representatives from the Motor Division were weaving all about in little pas de deux, sometimes pas de trois. About a dozen altogether, “corking” intersections just like they were the “leaders” of a Critical Mass bike parade:

Let’s hope the V.I.P. inside wasn’t troubled Larry King, is all I can say…

Larry King Does San Francisco – Visits MoMA in the SoMA with Lady Friend

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Via the incomparable Steve Rhodes, who’s Everywhere You Want To Be, comes photographic proof of Larry King’s recent arrival.

At the Rooftop Garden of the SFMOMA:

[UPDATE: Oh, that's his wife Shawn.]

CurrentTV’s North Korean Trilogy: Cross the Border, Go To Jail, Get on Oprah

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Oh boy, after all that time to come up with a cohesive story, and all the lawyers and flackmeisters massaging the text, is this the best yo u could do?

“…we quickly turned back toward China. Midway across the ice…”

Back toward China?” What?

Now, see, there’s your problem right there.

No matter, on to Oprah. Next stop, Larry King!(Srsly.)

Of course, last year the North Koreans wanted Barack Obama to swing on by Pyongyang for what turned out to be the inevitable pick-up / photo-op. And, of course, Al Gore didn’t rate, seeing as how the people of NK wouldn’t really be all that impressed by him. So, there was this visit by Bill Clinton, which, who knows, maybe it led to or will lead to something good.

But I don’t think it has yet and, most likely, it never will. So, you two didn’t pull a Homer, after all, right?

And actually, in exchange for nothing, the current North Korean government got something it really, really wanted, something that allows it to, if ever so slightly more, maintain its grip on power.

Do people generally think this train wreck was a Good Thing?

And what do our funk Seoul brothers and sisters think, right about now? What’s that, the South Koreans don’t like you neither?

Oh well.

So, to whom should you apologize at this point? I can think of several groups of people. (Hint, hint.)

Here, I’ll start you off: “Our first mistake was naively thinking…”

Enjoy your five-star book tour… (Well, one of you, anyway. La renommée est une maîtresse inconsistante, non?)

Inaugural NoPA Velo a Huge Success – Monthly Bike Ride Kicks Off With Patty Hearst Theme

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Bike NOPA organized a successful bicycle ride yesterdayjoin them on the last weekend of the month, why don’t you? They’ll always start and end in the North of Panhandle Area, conveniently located just west of the EaPA .

Organizer Lenore is Patty Hearst:

She matches up well with this awesome WANTED poster, anyway. (Warning: Photoshop just might have been used here, albeit more skillfully than what you can see in similar materials from Mayor Gavin Newsom’s inchoate gubernatorial campaign.)

But let’s start at the beginning, at the ridiculously popular Central Cofee Tea and Spice at the corner of Central and Hayes. Owner Ali was impressed with the early-morning turnout:

40+ cyclists began the trek:

It almost looked like Critical Mass, that monthly illegal bicycle parade, except that NoPA Velo riders actually stop at red lights to let cross-traffic through. And that makes all the difference…

And then the handsome crowd…

…went up the hill to visit the secure undisclosed location where Patty Hearst’s kidnappers* kept her in a closet on Golden Gate Avenue in the NoPA:

Off the riders go, through Golden Gate Park and on up to the Presidio to hear of recent developments from Ranger Dale:

And then it was over to Jannah on bustling Fulton for an apres-velo lunchtime bite.

See you on the next ride!

*Patty Hearst Shaw managed to get pardoned by two different U.S. Presidents. Here she is, just after the second pardon, on the Larry King pwning local attorney Stuart Hanlon:

“KING: People not happy with your pardon, Stuart Hanlon, the defense lawyer for the former SLA fugitive Kathy Soliah, now known as Sara Jane Olson.

HEARST: What a surprise. He’s also my kidnapper’s lawyer, too.”

Pwned.

Larry King’s USA Today Column Resurrected by Willie Brown, San Francisco Chronicle

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

Before, you had to get your fix of Willie Brown by showing up at trials or waiting for someone to ask his opinion about “cows and chickens and goats and other things.” But no longer. Willie Brown has resurrected Larry King’s USA Today column!

Back in the day, it was only Larry who could give us a definitive “weekly offering studded with plugs, superlatives and dropped names.” But Larry’s been busy doing other things lately, so he’s passed the baton to Willie.

Quién es este hombre?

So which mots of the debut column are the most bon? How about:

“‘Looking for a movie? Pass on ‘Hancock.’”

That’s so Larry, it’s scary.

Look forward to more pearls of wisdom soon.
