Marin Headlands: Tunnel and Scenic Overlook Parking/Pull-Outs

Tunnel re-opened June 3, 2017

The major phases of the Baker-Barry Tunnel preservation project are complete. Crews have addressed fissures and cracks in the tunnel wall, pumped polyurethane into the gaps around the tunnel lining, and installed a new, more energy-efficient lighting system. The historic tunnel is now preserved to bring the next generation of park visitors to the Marin Headlands.

Parking and pull-outs are now open to vehicles on Conzelman Road east of the McCullogh traffic circle.

About the Tunnel Preservation Project: Safer Surfaces. Better Lighting.

This project repaired the tunnel’s concrete structure. Repaired cracks and leaks resulted in a slippery film of sediment that created a safety hazard for vehicles and bicyclists.

A new tunnel LED light system will reduce energy use by an estimated 40% from what was the single largest energy user at Golden Gate National Recreation Area! The new lights also better illuminate the tunnel for vehicles and bicyclists.

We also replaced water and sewer lines mounted in the tunnel. The outdated water and sewer lines were subject to frequent breaks which resulted in tunnel closures.

I’ve Never Seen a New-School LED Traffic Signal Not Working, But Here’s One – On Hayes Street – But It Got Fixed, Quickly, Via 311

[Oh look, it’s me being “upbeat.” WARNING: Boredom ahead – feel free to click off somewhere else.]

I’ll tell you back in the day, traffic signals used to get busted all the time, cause incandescent bulbs would burn out. Then we got LED lights instead – a bunch of little points of light, so if one two go bad it’s no biggee because there are tons of others telling you to stop.

Of course it’s possible for the entire assembly to lose its power for other reasons, as here, on Hayes:

I’ve never seen this before. (This is the point of my post, sorry.) So I called 311 and (unlike the cases where low-level RPD workers beg me, literally beg me, to call 311 to get whatever issue right on up to the Big Guy in McLaren Lodge the next morning) I got through with a quickness and then I never noticed this busted signal again, like the next day.

IDK why 311 thinks I need some case # – it’s like my duty is extinguished as soon as I hang up. It’s on you guys now.

(I’ll tell you, one time I called the 911 for a missing manhole (personhole? I lack the proper vocabulary, obvs. In my day we called ’em “manhole covers” ’cause THAT WAS THE WAY WE LIKED IT) cover on Fell at Lyon in the Western Addition. And 911 was like, oh, we’ll contact DPW (with the implication being that that’s what I should have done instead) and I’m like, thinking to myself here, uh, no, if somebody on a moped on Fell runs over this giant hole, IT’S GOOD-NIGHT NURSE. Ergo, that’s the emergency.)

On the right you can see the new LEDs and on the left you can see the pinkish brownish light you get from regular old street lamps.

That’s it. That was the cause for all the hullaballoo.

And any org what crows about all the benefits of this change is the very same org that burns some street lamps all the livelong day, 24/7/365 for something like a year now.

Now IRL, what these LEDs will do is save money, prolly, over time. The connection to safety is tenuous, certainly.

Hey, what’s that in the background? Is it Yet Another Streetlight in the area what’s been on 24-7 for half a year? Yep.

Does SFGov care? Nope.

Burning Daylight: Why are the Streetlights of Presidio Heights ON in the Daytime?

Let’s see here, Presidio Heights has had fancier-than-average street lights for a while now, ’cause why not, right?

These days, LED lights are the new thang, so Presidio Heights is getting them as well. And SFGov puts up signs for the rich denizens asking, “Hey what do you think of the new lights, let us know,” kind of thing.

But these new lights are on like all the time. Like this:

Oh well.

Our streetlight people must think we’re made of money.

AND THAT REALLY GRINDS MY GEARS!*

Pick a stupid catch-phrase for the SFPUC to use about LED lights, which I’ve had in my crib for years:

1. leading edge

2. state of the art

3. world-class

The answers are #1 and #2 – I haven’t come across the SFPUC talking about the “world-class” lights they leave on all the live long day yet, but one of these days I prolly will.

Don’t stop believin’

*Not really. But I’m pointing out just one example of a pretty big difference betwixt how our PUC sees itself and how it actually is IRL.

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission invites interested community members to attend a public meeting to discuss our upcoming Street Light Wireless Control Pilot Project.

The purpose of this pilot project is to test a suite of leading edge wireless technologies which will be mounted on several new, environmentally friendly LED street light fixtures in the vicinity of Washington Street between Arguello and Presidio. Some of the wireless technologies will enable more effective monitoring and control of LED fixtures (including adaptive lighting, which allows for off-peak hour modification of street light levels), and some technologies will support other services, like electric meter reading, pollution monitoring and traffic signal control. The pilot project will allow us to try out the proposed technologies before the City begins converting all City-owned street lamps to LED fixtures.

We’re testing a state-of-the-art street lighting system comprising light-emitting diode (LED) street lights and wireless monitoring and control equipment. The new remote controls and ultra-efficient LED fixtures, which replace high-pressure sodium street light fixtures, have been installed in these neighborhoods:
The Inner Sunset, on Irving Street between 7th Avenue and 14th Avenue
Presidio Heights, on Washington Street between Walnut Street and Maple Street
Our public survey period ended at close of business on February 24, 2014. Many, many thanks to everyone who participated in the online survey and live demonstration events. You can read a comprehensive analysis of the survey results here.

Residents and businesses in the test areas were briefed on the installations during community meetings last winter. The new, ultra-efficient LED street lights will consume 50% less energy and burn three-to-four times longer than existing lamps. In addition, the LED’s will be:

monitored and controlled remotely (removing the need for members of the public to report broken lamps)

equipped with an adaptive lighting feature which allows for energy-saving off-peak hour adjustment of street light levels

powered by 100% greenhouse gas-free Hetch Hetchy hydroelectric energy (just like all City street lights)
