“Among those reportedly interested in the District 5 seat are Julian Davis, president of the board of Booker T. Washington Community Service Center; Gabriel Haaland, political director of SEIU Local 1021; Phil Ginsburg, Recreation and Park Department Director; and Michael O’Connor, the co-owner of the Independent Music Hall. Breed, who directs the African American Cultural Center on Fulton Street, has expressed interest in the position. She has a large segment of the Black activist community behind her, pushing Mayor Lee to appoint her as supervisor. “London is a woman who is definitely qualified to sit in that seat,” said Bridgette LeBlanc, with Black Women Organized for Political Action (BWOPA). ’She is a native San Franciscan who was raised and works in the community. She is a leader who is electable, and she can build bridges.’”
OMG, it’s LB with the POTUS!
Here are the reasons:
1. She is the choice of Willie Brown.
2. She is the choice of Willie Brown. Yeah, I know what you’re thinking, but why should Chinatown power broker Rose Pak have any say in D5, which, historically, anyway, is/was, along with D10, an “African-American district?”
3. She is the choice of Willie Brown and she has waaaaaaaaay less baggage than recent mayoral appointee Mohammed Nuru. I mean, how could she have as many closet skeletons as he? So, he makes the cut and she doesn’t – would that make sense?
4. She is the choice of Willie Brown and as a matter of fact, about four years ago, Willie the Sorting Hat actually tried to place London into the Assembly(!), or into the Tri-Wizard Tournament or somewhere. That seemed a stretch at the time, but appointing LB as Supe doesn’t seem a stretch at all right here and right now.
5. She is a 2008 “graduate” of Emerge California, which encourages women to run for elective office. And when I say “encourages,” I mean pressures. (Signing up for Emerge** is kind of like saying that you plan on running for office (or higher office) sooner rather than later.) Anyway, the questions Mayor Ed Lee’s people would have for London concern her commitment for becoming and maintaining her position as Supervisor, right? So, London, if not now, when?
6. She is the Worst Case Scenario for San Francisco’s progressives, IMO. She would be a train wreck for them, actually. So as far as Ed Lee’s political faction is concerned, picking anybody else would be an unnecessary risk.
7. She is the choice of the Internet, más o menos.
Those are the reasons – the strongest are #1 and #6.
So, if I know my Ed Lee, London Breed will be the appointee.
Bank on it.
As that Omar Khalif guy recently said:
“Ed Lee is going to pull a G. Newsom n D5 appointment. Keep yo eye on my sister.”
*Which means I’ve figured this out on my own, unlike say, a year and a half ago when I got a phone call telling me the game plan about how Mark Farrell was going to win in District 2, which he did.
**And pay your money, but, srsly, it’s a pretty sweet deal, if you’re a woman planning on running for office soon, and if you’re not a Repub or a Green, and if you’re fortunate enough to get picked.

Our Teatro ZinZanni has a new home, but Sarah Duxbury says that some heavy lifting still needs to be done.
No matter, TZ’s cabaret performers were on hand all smiles yesterday at the news conference* in the “50 Broadway” parking lot near the Embarcadero. This location will be ZinZanni’s new home, if everything works out.
(I’ll tell you, I can’t tell the difference betwixt Gavin Newsom running the Newsom Administration and Ed Lee running the Newsom Adminstration, fundamentally. I mean, Ed Lee is not an impetuous asshole, so that means he behaves better, he tends to show up at these kinds of functions with a smaller entourage and less drama. That’s good, I s’pose…)

Ah let’s review.
- Remember when a mid-level PG&E employee* threatened me at an event sponsored by the Presidio Trust, told me that I should take one of my PG&E-related posts down because, I was done told, “It would be your interest to take that post down?” And I was like, well what does that mean? Oh that’s right, Gentle Reader, you don’t remember, but I do. Strike One.
- And remember when PG&E killed eight people near SFO last year? Strike Two.
- And remember when Mayor Ed Lee* recently started going on about how “City Family” member “PG&E is a great local company who gets it?” Strike Three.
Oh well.
Now, here’s the scene last night at 7:00 PM as I was swinging by the FiDi to pick up my special lady friend at an area law firm. Workers were just setting up the cones. And then a paramedic was telling me, “This one isn’t PG&E’s fault – somebody was digging.” Well yeah, but that somebody was PG&E itself:

[UPDATE: Senator Leland Yee is on the case this AM - he's doing a presser involving this latest allegation. (I guess it's too late to call this an October Surprise, and frankly, it's not all that surprising neither. Let's call it a November Expectation. Brace yourself for more.) Oh, and Leland is onto some Chinatown voting sting operation as well.
And there's this: "Statement from Chiu Campaign on Money Laundering Allegations - SAN FRANCISCO (November 2, 2011): Addisu Demissie, spokesman for the David Chiu for Mayor campaign, released the following statement about a San Francisco Chronicle report of potential money laundering by supporters of Mayor Ed Lee:
"This is now the fourth allegation of illegal conduct by Mayor Lee's supporters, and it should be investigated fully by the District Attorney and appropriate authorities,” Demissie said. “With six days to go before Election Day, it will be up to the voters to decide whether this kind of bullying, pay-to-play politics is what they want to see at City Hall for the next 4 years. David is going to spend the last 6 days of this race talking about why he represents a new generation of leadership for San Francisco that will stand tough against the special interests and shake things up at City Hall."

Well, it looks like early-rising City Attorney Dennis Jose Herrera is the first one out of the gates to follow up on today’s piece from San Francisco Chronicle Staff Writers John Coté and Heather Knight.

“Too many of Ed Lee’s supporters act as though they’re above the law — on money laundering, on ballot tampering, and more – and Ed Lee isn’t strong enough to stop it.
Amen.
Earlier this year, Ed Lee was picked unanimously to be an Interim Mayor. He wasn’t picked to be a Reformer. He’ll never be a Reformer.
In Ed Lee’s world, the notorious Willie Brown Administration deserves an A+, Rose Pak is not a cancer on Chinatown, and corner-cutting PG&E (“KABOOM!“) is simply “a great local corporation” and a “great company that gets it.”
Oh well.

“Herrera calls on FPPC to join D.A. in investigating new Ed Lee campaign money laundering charge - CitiApartments’ former eviction goon led reimbursement-for-donation scheme, suggesting political payback for City Attorney’s 2006 tenant-protection lawsuit
SAN FRANCISCO (Nov. 2, 2011) — City Attorney Dennis Herrera this morning called on the state Fair Political Practices Commission to join District Attorney George Gascón in reviewing new allegations reported in today’s San Francisco Chronicle that Ed Lee’s mayoral campaign received donations that appear to have been illegally laundered to skirt San Francisco $500 per donor contribution maximum.[1] Andrew Hawkins, a property services manager whose harrowing tenant intimidation tactics were central to Herrera’s lawsuit five years ago against the Lembi Group landlords’ once high-rolling CitiApartments empire, promised reimbursements to at least sixteen employees in exchange for maximum contributions to Ed Lee’s mayoral campaign at an Oct. 18, 2011 fundraiser, according to the Chronicle.
It is the second major allegation of campaign money laundering to benefit Ed Lee’s campaign. The first, involving GO Lorrie’s airport shuttle, is the subject of separate investigations by Gascón’s office and the FPPC, the state commission responsible to investigate and impose penalties for violations of the California Political Reform Act. Such schemes have been prosecuted as felonies in California for conspiring to evade campaign contribution limits, and for making campaign contributions under false names.
“I think San Franciscans have now seen enough,” said City Attorney Dennis Herrera. “Too many of Ed Lee’s supporters act as though they’re above the law — on money laundering, on ballot tampering, and more — and Ed Lee isn’t strong enough to stop it. If this is how they behave before an election, just imagine how they’ll behave after the election, if Ed Lee wins. This scheme is clearly a bid for political payback by CitiApartments henchmen for my litigation to protect tenants five years ago. It is patently illegal, and I call on the FPPC to join the District Attorney in investigating.”
Hawkins is listed in Ed Lee’s campaign disclosures as the owner of Archway Property Services. As the one-time head of CitiApartments’ “tenant relocation program,” the gun-carrying Hawkins is reported to have coerced more than 2,500 tenants out of their rent-controlled units, and once boasted in civil court testimony, “I run people out of their apartments for a living. It’s what I do.“
Several recipients of Hawkins’ email invitation to an Oct. 18 event on Russian Hill made contributions to Ed Lee’s campaign on the same date. All contributed the maximum $500.
Herrera sued the CitiApartments residential rental property behemoth in Aug. 2006 for an array of unlawful business and tenant harassment practices, which sought to dispossess long-term residents of their rent-controlled apartments. The coerced vacancies freed the company to make often-unpermitted renovations to units, and then re-rent them to new tenants at dramatically increased market rates. The illegal business model enabled CitiApartments, Skyline Realty and other entities under the sway of real estate family patriarch Frank Lembi to aggressively outbid competitors for residential properties throughout San Francisco for several years — before lawsuits and a sharp economic downturn forced the aspiring empire into bankruptcies, foreclosures and receiverships.
A 2009 San Francisco Magazine feature story on the Lembi real estate empire[2] described Andrew Hawkins as “a burly former nightclub bouncer who headed up CitiApartments’ relocation program.” Hawkins reportedly led teams as large as 14 full-time employees, according to the report, and the company estimated that “Hawkins relocated more than 2,500 tenants.” An earlier exposé in 2006 by the San Francisco Bay Guardian[3] cited civil court testimony in which Hawkins boasted to one tenant’s family member, “I run people out of their apartments for a living. It’s what I do.”

Or, in the words of our somewhat-corrupt-but-doesn’t-even-know-it Mayor Ed Lee on the topic of Pigs, Giraffes and Elephants:
“They’re a great company that gets it.”
That blunder came out the day everybody in town was talking about how PG&E had just gotten harshed by the Feds in DC for killing people in San Bruno and then, through the past twelve months, also lying about (misstating about? misleading about?) killing those people.
Compare that with a series of incidents that didn’t kill anybody and that PG&E didn’t lie about during the Newsom administration:

Oh well. (Realize that PG&E was just as integral to Gavin Newsom’s mayoralty as it is now for Ed Lee’s…)
Ed Lee lives his life 24/7 in the “City Family” bubble, where Rose Pak is benevolent, all-seeing, all-knowing “Aunty Rose” and Recology is the best company in the world and the Central Subway is the Road to Paradise.
Oh well.
*If I were a Parking Control Officer, I’d never ticket PG&E no matter what, just saying. BTW, that’s a PGE-stickered Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid, GM’s “electric car.”**
**Some people still think the Volt is an electric car. This has to do with GM lying about this subject a couple years back.

Well, let’s check the official Food Desert Locator, you know, from the Feds, to see that the location of that new self-serve Fresh & Easy grocery store at 5800 Third isn’t in a “food desert” after all.

The pink areas are the purported food deserts. The blob on the right is mostly mostly-shut-down Hunters Point, where I think I’d get shot if I snuck in to look for a gro sto anyway. And the lower pink blob contains Candlestick Point, which is loaded with parking lots and a dismal state park for parking your RV and a big old stadium, so there you go.
But, even before the new F&E, the vast majority of the residents of Bayview Hunters Point weren’t living in a “food desert,” FTR.
I know it’s fun to use new catchphrases, but you shouldn’t do that when they don’t apply.
So, am I saying [insert ridiculous conclusion-jump here]?
No, I’m just saying:
That New “Fresh & Easy” Gro Sto Wasn’t Put in a “Food Desert” – Most Bayview Residents Not in “Food Desert”
That’s all.
Writers, please try harder. Pols, I know that doing things the right way doesn’t gain you any votes, but don’t you have some pride?

Boy, that’s going to be a hot L.Z. when Temporary Interim Caretaker Mayor Ed Lee alights on Lower Third to attend the groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the new Bayview Branch Library at Revere Street.
Currently, he’s skedded to be on hand tomorrow morning, along with Senator Mark Leno.
We’ll just have to wait to see what happens.
All I have to say is hot L. Z., HOTEL LIMA ZULU, RTB, RTB.

I don’t know, is the Bayview / Hunter’s Point area really a “food desert” the way the Feds and everybody else are saying?
(Get up to speed on the recent hoopla* at the Walgreen’s at 5300 Third Street here over at the Bay Citizen.)
So before, Walgreens had some fresh food on sale but now they have slightly more fresh food on sale. O.K. fine.
But that don’t make you a “food oasis,” Walgreens.
Now, check out what’s just across the street the next block over at 5201 3rd. It’s Aguila de Oro Produce. See? It’s smack dab in the middle of the Lower Third’s purported “food desert” and yet it’s more of a “food oasis,” as defined by the Feds, than any Walgreens in the world:

This store serves all comers. In a way, it’s has an unlimited supply.
And, what it doesn’t have is the Great Wall o’ Chips near the checkout stand the way the “oasis store” Walgreens at 5300 3rd Street has:

So, Is Bayview Hunters Point Really a “Food Desert?” No.
And Is the Lower Third Street Walgreens Really a “Food Oasis” Now? No.
Just saying.
