SAN FRANCISO – Today, District Attorney George Gascón, Board of Supervisors President David Chiu, and Supervisors John Avalos, London Breed, Malia Cohen, Jane Kim, Scott Wiener, Norman Yee held a press conference to denounce Islamophobic and racist advertisements by the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI) scheduled to run on MUNI buses today.
“These offensive ads serve no other purpose than to denigrate our city’s Arab and Muslim communities,” said District Attorney George Gascón. “When any community in San Francisco is attacked, it affects all of us. I and the city leaders standing with me today are exercising our free speech rights in condemning these ads and standing with the Arab and Muslim communities of San Francisco.”
“Hate has no place in our City,” said Mayor Ed Lee. “San Francisco is a city that celebrates its diversity, and hateful speech and discrimination against our Arab and Muslim communities will never be tolerated.”
“Our respect for free speech does not mean we allow hateful speech to go unchallenged,” said Board President David Chiu. “As a former civil rights attorney, I’m proud to stand with our Arab and Muslim American families to send a united message that San Francisco embraces diversity and tolerance, not hate and bigotry.”
AFDI’s founder Pamela Geller has been deemed an anti-Muslim hate extremist by the Southern Poverty Law Center. In August of 2012, San Franciscans were outraged over AFDI advertisements on MUNI that referred to Arabs and Muslims as “savages.” Arab and Muslim community leaders say the new advertisements are even more offensive as they wrongly suggest that all Muslims are defined by extremism and violence, and baselessly target Arab and Muslim San Franciscans who make invaluable contributions to the city’s life and culture.
Supervisor David Chiu is introducing a resolution to condemn the Islamophobic and racist MUNI Ads at Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting. In response, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority will dedicate the proceeds from the offensive advertisements to fund a city-wide study on the impact of discrimination on Arab and Muslim communities. City leaders have met with Council on American-Islamic Relations – San Francisco Bay Area, Asian Law Caucus, the Ramallah Club, the Arab Cultural Center, churches and mosques to discuss targeting of vulnerable communities and the city’s commitment to protecting and standing with those communities.”

It will only create divisions within the city. Not because Milk was gay, but because renaming the airport after him makes no sense.
WELL, I DON’T KNOW. IT CERTAINLY WOULD MAKE SOME SENSE. THE QUESTION IS ABOUT WEIGHING THE PROS AND CONS.
Moscone Center is named after Mayor George Moscone because he negotiated the deal with various factions to get the place built, and a lot of low-income housing along with it.
WELL THAT WASN’T A GOOD IDEA NOW WAS IT? PERHAPS WE SHOULDN’T NAME ANYTHING AFTER POLITICIANS? AND WHY IS JFK AIRPORT NAMED AFTER JFK?
Harvey had no relationship with the airport. What Campos is doing is trying to heighten Milk’s symbolic stature as the liberator of gays.
WELL, IS THAT A CRIME?
It’s a mistake, and I hope enough gay leaders say so before this splits the town.

SFO is a “world-class” IATA code, right up there with LAX and JFK, right?
Also, what if we kick-off an SFO renaming campaign for Harvey and the process gets hijacked by San Francisco Shadow Mayor Willie L Brown Jr.?
You know he wants something like that, right?
Just saying.
PS: Oh, and what would the new IATA code be? MLK? Well, that code is already taken, by someplace in Montana. And also, well, MLK, just don’t go there, girlfriend. If you wanted to say something like “SFO, An International Airport from Harvey Milk” or something like that, the damage would be lessened.

“U.S. Supreme Court sets Prop 8 oral argument date for March 26
DOMA challenge scheduled for the next day, setting the stage for back-to-back showdown over LGBT civil rights
SAN FRANCISCO (Jan. 7, 2013) — The U.S. Supreme Court moments ago published its formal argument calendar for March 2013, scheduling oral arguments in the federal constitutional challenge to California’s Proposition 8, called Hollingsworth v. Perry, for March 26, beginning at 10:00 a.m. EDT (7:00 a.m. PDT).
Another case that is also related to same-sex marriage rights — a challenge to the constitutionality of the federal Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA — will be heard the following day, on March 27, at the same time. That case is called United States v. Windsor.
In granting review to both marquee marriage equality cases exactly one month ago, the nation’s highest court set the stage for potentially landmark rulings on LGBT civil rights that promise to be the most eagerly-anticipated of the current court term. Rulings are expected by the end of June.
The legal issues at stake in the challenge to Prop 8, the controversial 2008 ballot measure that eliminated marriage rights for same-sex partners in California, are two-fold: first, whether the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment prohibits the State of California from defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman; and second, whether the proponents of Prop 8 have legal standing to litigate the case.
The American Foundation for Equal Rights filed the lawsuit in May 2009 on behalf two California couples who sought to marry: Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, and Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo. They are represented by lead counsel Theodore B. Olson and David Boies. City Attorney Dennis Herrera intervened as a co-plaintiff in the case in August 2009, renewing San Francisco’s groundbreaking pubic sector legal advocacy for the broader societal interest to end marriage discrimination against lesbian and gay couples. At trial, Herrera and his legal team provided extensive evidence that state and local governments derive significant societal and economic benefits when same-sex partners enjoy equal marriage rights — and, conversely, that denying such rights inflicts grave injustices on the LGBT community that, in turn, harm government and society at large.
When the high court granted review to the case on Dec. 7, 2012, Herrera said: “The federal challenge to Prop 8 represents one of the most significant civil rights cases to be taken up by the U.S. Supreme Court in decades, and I’m confident that the high court will reach a decision that reaffirms our Constitution’s promise of equal protection under the law.”

Wow, Another Blow for Interim D5 Supervisor Christina Olague: Assemblymember Tom Ammiano Endorses John Rizzo

Anyway, here’s the news of the day:

SAN FRANCISCO — Longtime San Francisco activist and California Assemblymember Tom Ammiano has endorsed John Rizzo for District 5 Supervisor.
Ammiano has served San Francisco for three decades as a teacher, civil rights leader, SF School Board President, Supervisor, and Assembymember. He cited Rizzo’s leadership experience, both with City College and as a Sierra Club leader, as well as his commitment to finding creative and effective solutions to today’s biggest problems.

Avalos Campaign Speculates Final Tally Will Edge in Their Favor, Pleased With Direction They Turned Race
SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Wednesday, November 9th — Mayoral candidate John Avalos responded to results from first round of votes, putting him in a strong second place.
“We are incredibly proud to have run a clean, issue-based campaign, with 99% of the work done by volunteers. We defied expectations, and to have come this far is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers,” Avalos says. “But we are equally proud of the fact that we were able to change the debate, to make sure that the issues that matter to the everyday people in this City are now on the table and are getting the attention they deserve. In spite of entering the race late, and spending less than a quarter of the budget of the Lee campaign, Avalos saw a surge in both the polls and on the streets. His campaign had enormous grassroots support from a broad cross-section of San Franciscans, with over 90% of donations coming from everyday San Franciscans, and 85% being under $100. This is markedly different from other campaigns who relied on negative character attacks, hit pieces, television commercials, and the efforts of big-dollar unregulated independent expenditure committees to make up the difference.
“This campaign is about building unity, building connections within the community of people who have been left out of the political process. We have been proud and inspired to see people from the Tenants Union working side-by-side with people from the Bike Coalition, to see members of DogPAC working with community members from the Bayview,” says Rosi Reyes, campaign spokeswoman. “These connections are integral to ensuring a new era of progressive policymaking in San Francisco, and we believe it is just a glimmer of what is to come with an Avalos administration.”
In addition to generating enormous grassroots enthusiasm, Avalos garnered some of the most-coveted endorsements in town. He was endorsed by the San Francisco Bay Guardian, the San Francisco Democratic Party, the Harvey Milk LGBT Democractic Club, the San Francisco Bike Coalition, and the largest public-sector union, SEIU 1021. He was also endorsed by the United Educators of San Francisco, the California Nurses Association, and San Francisco Rising Action Fund, among many others.”
