Hurry on down to Union Square before the holiday ice skating rink leaves us on January 21, 2013.
This was the scene on December 6th: Drag Queens On Ice 2012: Bigger, Better and Bawdier!
Simply everybody was there to cheer on the queens, including members of the San Francisco Bulls hockey team and the concomitant Cow Belles:

[UPDATE: Upon further review, these aren't Chinese naval uniforms after all:

At first I thought they could have been from the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy.
And oh, look what's on the PLAN's to-do list:

See that? In addition to taking over Japanese islands (the Senkakus and others), the neo-Imperial Chinese Navy wants to take over Vietnamese, Malaysian, Filipino, and Bruneian islands as well. And don't forget about Taiwan.
But we're being visited by a South Korean ship so it's all good.]

Of course, our local Macy’s isn’t really in the bidness of selling you dresses, ladies, it’s in the bidness of selling fantasy, dreams, or, indeed, “magic.”
But let’s leave that aside as we take a look at today’s ad:

A bit of a mismatch, it seems.
But as always, You Make The Call. Check out today’s San Francisco Examiner, page 3, IIRC.

40 red bags + 40 white stars + 40 all-black outfits on 40 college-types = only one thing. These people must be in the Macy’s Executive Training Program, just like how Jerry Seinfeld’s mom wanted for Jerry if that whole comedy thing didn’t work out.

Macy’s Holiday Windows will fire up once again in Union Square come November 19th, 2010.
Volunteer, won’t you?
“The SF SPCA is also seeking volunteers to interact with jolly holiday shoppers and the many visitors to the Windows. Volunteers representing the SF SPCA answer questions about the animals and collect donations in front of the Windows on Stockton and O’Farrell streets. Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to sign up online at www.sfspca.org/support/volunteer.”
And the old-school displays are based upon the Yes, Virginia animated movie? Apparently.

The San Francisco SPCA and Macy’s Unveil Adoptable Pets on Nov. 19 at 5 p.m. in Annual Union Square Event to Help Homeless Cats and Dogs Find Loving New Homes
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Nov. 11, 2010 – The San Francisco SPCA is teaming up with Macy’s for the 24th annual Macy’s Holiday Windows featuring adoptable animals from the SF SPCA. The Windows will be unveiled on Friday, Nov. 19, 2010 and last through Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011. Shoppers and pet-lovers alike are encouraged to visit and adopt some of San Francisco’s cutest cats and dogs from the Windows located at Stockton and O’Farrell streets in Union Square. The SF SPCA has a goal of 320 adoptions by Jan. 2, 2011.
KNTV’s (NBC, Bay Area) Emmy Award winning meteorologist Craig Herrera joins the festivities again this year and will host the unveiling ceremony at 5 p.m. on Nov. 19 with students from San Francisco’s De Marillac Academy.
“The Macy’s Holiday Windows featuring adoptable animals from the SF SPCA has become synonymous with the holidays among San Franciscans and has been an enormous boon to our efforts to bring comfort to the many adorable animals we care for through donations and adoptions,” said Dr. Jennifer Scarlett, SF SPCA interim co-president. “Through this wonderful partnership with Macy’s, I hope we inspire visitors to open their hearts and their homes to these precious cats and dogs.”

Here’s the skivvy on Macy’s new Heart of Haiti collection. It has:
“…40 different home decor items and accessories. Products include vases, candle holders, serving trays, picture frames, mirrors, coasters, necklaces, clutch purses and more. Most items fall in the $25-$60 range. The Heart of Haiti collection has already led to employment of 350 artists in Haiti and has provided some financial benefits for an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 people in the country. Each item is designed by a master Haitian artist and made by hand in Haiti.”
To kick things off Macy’s Union Square this is having an event on Saturday, October 23 at 1pm.
Deets below. See you there!

“Macy’s is launching a new home decor collection to help rebuild Haiti, one piece of art at a time. To celebrate the Heart of Haiti launch, Macy’s is hosting a special event in San Francisco. The event will feature Haitian artists who will describe their work and the impact it has on the Haitian community. And attendees will have the chance to enjoy Haitian music, dancing and food.
The Heart of Haiti celebration is happening at Macy’s Union Square this Saturday, October 23 at 1pm.
The collection features an array of handmade products for the home — quilts, metalwork, ceramics, and paintings — designed and created by Haitian artisans. Instead of providing one-time funding through charity, Heart of Haiti is creating opportunities for Haitian artisans to earn income with dignity by creating jobs and sustainable income for the people of Haiti. In other words, Heart of Haiti is based on “Trade, Not Aid” and is using business and commerce to create social change.
Quick Facts about Heart of Haiti* – Heart of Haiti products are available exclusively at 25 Macy’s stores around the country and on Macys.com – http://macys.com/haiti* The collection includes 40 different home decor items and accessories* Products include vases, candle holders, serving trays, picture frames, mirrors, coasters, necklaces, clutch purses and more* Most items fall in the $25-$60 range* The Heart of Haiti collection has already led to employment of 350 artists in Haiti and has provided some financial benefits for an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 people in the country* Each item is designed by a master Haitian artist and made by hand in Haiti”

Now, you’re too young to remember Madonna’s Material Girl phase (well maybe this is a better example), but her 80′s look is back in a big way for 2010.
So, this coming Tuesday, August 3rd, you can start lining up at the Macy’s at 170 O’Farrell to get one of 200 free bandeau tops and a gift card and maybe even an autographed Madonna T-shirt if you can pull off a proper Material Girl get-up.
Site / Blog / FB
Appears as if Taylor Momsen won’t need too much help to get to an MG look. Anyway, look for her to model la coleccion starting next week:
See? Same lipstick:

The deets:
“The collection launches next week, on 8.3.10, at Macy’s Union Square, and this location is throwing two launch parties on Tuesday to celebrate! The first event will start promptly at 10 a.m, as the first 200 customers to line up at Macy’s in Union Square at this hour will receive a free bandeau top from the Material Girl collection and a $10 gift card valid only on August 3. At 11 a.m., show up in your best Madonna look for a chance to win an autographed Madonna t-shirt. Then, later in the day (at 3:00), everyone is invited to a shopping party at Macy’s!”

These little gutterpunks think they can just sit down on the sidewalk at the intersection of Haight and Ashbury and eat ice cream all day. Can you imagine?
Anyway, Ben and Jerry’s Free Cone Day 2010 is a huge success today, with the line running the length of four Victorian houses.

The line at Macy’s Union Square is much shorter, as per usual on FCD. Choose or lose.
Thanks Ben, thanks, Jerry!

It’s on. Once again, it’s on. Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream is having its 32nd Annual Free Cone Day this Tuesday, March 22, 2010 from 12:00 Noon to 8:00 PM.
There’ll be five four places in San Francisco (79 Jefferson, where you at?) for you to get your cone on. Click onward to see the locations for the South, East, und North Bays on the jump page or just go here to see all locations in northern North America.
On Tuesday, this udder will be equipped to dispense four new flavors:
Milk & Cookies - After the company’s recent announcement of its commitment to a full Fair Trade line-up, this new flavor is leading the pack using Fair Trade ingredients. Vanilla Ice Cream with a Chocolate Cookie Swirl, Chocolatey Chip & Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookie Pieces.
Chocowlate Chip - Fair Trade Certified Vanilla Ice Cream with Fudge Cows. (Available in Scoop Shops only)
Peanut Brittle - Peanut Brittle Ice Cream with Peanut Brittle Pieces and a Caramel Swirl.
Maple Blondie - Maple Ice Cream with Blonde Brownie Chunks and a Maple Caramel Swirl - all in honor of Olympic Medalist Hannah Teter

mkdougal via Flickr
Or just go for the cone, your choice.
Be aware that the B&J outlet at Haight and Ashbury can get a little crunchy and also quite a bit busy after school lets out. And without the (mostly harmless) sit/lie law on the books yet, look out for this kind of Nevius Nightmare:

Look at them there, they were just sitting / lying on the sidewalks back on Free Cone Day ’08. If I owned a house in the outer East Bay, well, my sensibilities would have been offended and my blood would have been boiling.
Anyway, observe proper Free Cone Day etiquette and…
See you there!
