Monday, August 6th, 2012

That’s right, the SFMTA isn’t sponsoring this one-day event next week and it isn’t invited neither.

Check it:

A few more deets on what SAVE MUNI has been up to the past month or so:

“Special Announcements

Muni Transportation Forum:

A Muni Transportation Forum, sponsored by SaveMuni and other groups will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2012 at the Koret Auditorium of the San Francisco Main Library, beginning at 10:00 am. The focus of the Forum will be on the general problems that prevent Muni from operating at full effectiveness and on some broad approaches to improving the situation.

Central Subway Litigation News:

August 4, 2012: To our knowledge there are at least three separate lawsuits now in progress or pending against the Central Subway. Any of them could block or significantly alter the project. More revelations to come.

Central Subway Disconnected from Muni:

Current: The Central Subway would be disconnected from the Market Street corridor, Muni Metro, BART, Ferries, Transbay Terminal, High-speed Rail, regional and statewide transit networks. Central Subway riders would have to travel on foot for over 1,200 feet to reach the Powell Muni Metro/BART Station. As part of the Subway project, today’s bus service into northeastern San Francisco would be cut by 50%. Most of today’s Stockton Street Muni users would find their subway trips to be longer than today’s bus trips.

Today’s Stockton Street bus riders can easily transfer to Muni LRV lines J, K, L, N, M, F and T and to Muni east-west bus lines 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, 9L, 10, 12, 14, 14L, 14x, 21, 31, 71, 71L and 76. Connections to every one of these 24 east-west lines as well as to all the BART lines would be substantially less convenient from the Central Subway than from today’s Stockton Street bus lines.

Central Subway Milestones:

August 29, 2011: SFMTA’s False Claims: Charts, developed from the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s(SFMTA’s) own data, compare Central Subway ridership, costs and trip times. The charts illustrate how the SFMTA was telling the Feds one thing and San Franciscans another. ChartsTARAugust2911.pdf

And oh, Smitten Ice Cream Moon Pies are involved. Deets below.

Adam Savage packing for Mars:

All the deets:

Mary Roach in conversation with Adam Savage

Wednesday, November 2 at 6pm, SF Main Library – Koret Auditorium, 100 Larkin St., 557-4277

What happens when one of the funniest and smartest authors around gets interviewed by a MythBuster? Hear which space legends might be as combustible as urban ones when Mary Roach and Adam Savage chat it up about Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void, San Francisco’s One City One Book selection for 2011.

Before the conversation, enjoy the premiere of Rockets of Yesterday, an eye-popping video tour of 1950s and 60s rocket dreams, curated by archivist and space enthusiast Megan Prelinger.

Mary Roach is the author of the bestselling books Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers, Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife, and Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex. She lives in Oakland, California.

Adam Savage is an American industrial design and special effects designer/fabricator, actor, educator, and co-host of the Discovery Channel television series MythBusters.

Plus, an extra sweet partnership:

Smitten Ice Cream in Hayes Valley – the folks behind that space age-y liquid nitrogen fueled instant ice cream maker — is making a special new space-themed flavor, Moon Pie, to coincide/partner with San Francisco Public Library’s annual One City One Book which this year is Packing for Mars by Mary Roach. A space themed ice cream flavor for a space-themed book!

The Moon Pie flavor will be a marshmallow ice cream with chocolate and graham cracker cookies. Yum.

The Library will be setting up a table outside Smitten’s shop next Thursday (10/27) and Friday (10/28) at 4 p.m. and Saturday 10/29 at Noon, giving away some free copies of the Packing for Mars book to the first handful of people who order the new Moon Pie flavor. Smitten is located at: 432 Octavia Street at Linden in Hayes Valley.

Plus, the Library’s big One City One Book event on Nov. 2 (Author Mary Roach in Conversation with Adam Savage) at the Main Library will feature an extra special prize treat courtesy of Smitten.”

Apple Haterade: San Francisco Public Library Hosts Bilingual Presentation on the Shortcomings of Apple’s iPad 2

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

[UPDATE: Our SFPL offers this in reply:

"FYI – we did do an iPad 2 training and demo a few months ago. Patrons specifically asked about Chinese-made tablets so the International Center Librarian specifically reached out to find some manufacturers to learn about their tablet computers. No sales pitches can be made. It’s purely informational session about the device and how it can work with library’s resources such as eBook downloads."

[UPDATE II: Well, let's consider the language below a first draft, as some of it is gone now. Check the current sched to see that there are now listed similar classes what focus on the iPad 2.]

Uh, our San Francisco Pubic Library has a “Chinese Center” that puts on bilingual demonstrations about how tablet PC’s like the Acer Iconia Tab and ASUS Eee Tab Transformer are better than Apple’s iPad 2?

Apparently:

San Francisco Public Library The Library’s Chinese Center hosts a demonstration about tablet computers from Taiwan in this bilingual program in Chinese and English: http://www.sfpl.org/index.php?pg=1007278301 -  Sat, 10/15/2011, 1:30 – 3:30.”

Acer Inc., a  top computer company in Taiwan, and Central Computers Co. will talk and demo the features of the popular Acer Iconia Tab and ASUS Eee Tab Transformer, including what iPad 2 doesn’t have. The program will be in English and Chinese.”

O.K. then.

News to me…

“Street Cuffs” are No Match for the Bike Thieves of San Francisco – The Little Monsters Will Get You Regardless

But, be my guest, if you want.

Isn’t It a Shame that People Have to Wait Until 12 Noon to Get Into Our Main Public Library on Sundays?

Monday, August 8th, 2011

Yes. Yes it is a shame.

Just look at these poor wretches, queuing up for the big library to open.

Shouldn’t this place open at 9:00 AM instead, you know, on Sundays?

I think so.

Just as Cigarettes Can Be Used as Currency in Prison, Bicycles are as Good as Money in Civic Center

Friday, June 10th, 2011

A happy bicycle thief strolls past the bike racks on Grove right in front of San Francisco’s Main Public Library.

This is the locus of bike theft for Northern California.

Oh well.

Anyway, bikes function  in this area as money, meeting all the standards – medium of exchange, store of value, you name it.

(Unless it’s a Bianchi, then it’s worth more.)

Your bike, the one that somebody has stolen or will steal, is worth $20. :(

Oh well.

The suspect said that the bike lock was so cheap and the bike was so expensive that it was beyond his control to not steal it,” Northern police Capt. Ann Mannix said during a Wednesday police meeting on crime trends.

Libraries and bikes just don’t match in the Twitterloin.

On It Goes.

And oh yes, your mid-to-late-90′s aluminum Trek is no longer worth $1000. And not even the “Bike Shepherd” can find it for you:
