PWNED! Interim District Five Supervisor Christina Olague Gets NO ENDORSEMENT From Democratic Party

Wow. A supposed “leader” of the Run Ed Run Draft Ed Lee for Mayor movement, a person who was rewarded with a Supervisor position for selling out her progressive values, just got a big fat vote of NO CONFIDENCE last night, courtesy of the Democratic Party of San Francisco.

“SAN FRANCISCO (Aug. 15, 2012) — The San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee tonight voted on the party’s endorsements for local candidates and propositions that will appear on the Nov. 6, 2012 Consolidated General Election ballot.  The governing board of San Francisco’s Democratic Party voted to endorse the following:

Though comprehensive official minutes of the DCCC’s special meeting at California State Office Building’s Milton Marks Auditorium will be forthcoming, member and committee reports included several updates on: the upcoming fall campaign; the hiring of a new executive director; current party finances and fundraising plans, including an event centered on President Obama’s nomination acceptance speech; voter registration; the redesigned party website and expanded communications efforts; and amending practices to meet many standards codified in the Brown Act and S.F. Sunshine Ordinance.  The DCCC also voted on a vendor for its fall slate card program.  

Public comments included numerous speakers advocating individually and on their organizations’ behalf for local candidates and measures; a monthly update on Organizing for America; concerns that the California Democratic Party endorsed Proposition 35 without consideration to official opponents and concerns from the sex worker community.  Two speakers called on DCCC members to address themselves to community concerns that policies governing the Castro’s Rainbow Flag do not comport with Presidential proclamations and other exigencies that merit lowering the flag to half-mast when appropriate.  

The lone new business item was a resolution passed by a majority of DCCC members that condemned inflammatory and offensive anti-Muslim advertising on Muni vehicles, and called on city officials and MTA authorities to change policies to prohibit such hate speech in the future.

Members John Rizzo and Hene Kelly closed the meeting by memorializing the late Milton Marks III, a highly regarded Community College Board member and former DCCC colleague, who passed away Aug. 9 at the age of 52.  The meeting was adjourned in Marks’s honor.

Committee reflects ‘unity and common purpose’ in 2012 to re-elect Obama, help Pelosi reclaim Speakership, and make a difference on key state ballot measures
SAN FRANCISCO (July 27, 2012) — California Democratic Party Chair John Burton administered the oath of office to the newly elected members of the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee Wednesday night at the first general meeting of the local Democratic Party’s governing board following the June 5th Primary Election.  

Veteran Democratic activist Mary Jung was unanimously elected to serve as the San Francisco Democratic Party’s chair, and several DCCC members were elected to fill leadership roles that will be critical to the local party’s success heading into the November 2012 General Election.  Top priorities discussed at the public meeting include re-electing President Obama, returning the Speakership to House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi by helping reclaim a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, and pushing to expand the number of Democratic voters citywide.  

“I’m honored to serve as Chair of the San Francisco Democratic Party, and I look forward to working hard with my fellow Democrats in an election year with so much at stake,” said Party Chair Mary Jung.    “San Francisco Democrats elected a terrific team to lead our county central committee, and I think it reflects a spirit of unity and common purpose.  I’m confident in our ability to help return President Obama to the White House, make Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi Speaker again, re-elect Senator Feinstein, and pass Gov. Brown’s revenue measure so California can maintain vital public services, restore quality education for all, and support our most vulnerable.”

Other officers elected at the general meeting held at the California State Office Building’s Milton Marks Auditorium on Golden Gate Avenue are: First Vice-Chair (Finance) Zoe Dunning; Second Vice-Chair (Issues) Alix Rosenthal; Third Vice-Chair (Voter Registration) Trevor McNeil; Fourth Vice-Chair (Club Chartering and Development) Leah Pimentel; Recording Secretary Kat Anderson; Treasurer Tom Hsieh; Corresponding Secretary Matt Dorsey; and Parliamentarian Arlo Hale Smith.  Rafael Mandelman will serve on the DCCC’s Slate Card Committee along with the Chair and Treasurer.  A committee tasked with proposing party bylaw changes to incorporate requirements of the Ralph M. Brown Act, which assures public access and participation in local government public meetings, will include David Chiu, Arlo Hale Smith, Matt Dorsey and Hene Kelly.  That ad hoc committee will seek to fully harmonize local party bylaws with relevant provisions of state law to address concerns that the election of six members of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to the DCCC may occasionally trigger Brown Act requirements. 

The committee also adopted two resolutions: one in support of placing AB 1648, a campaign finance reform measure known as the DISCLOSE Act, on the California ballot; and another expressing the Democratic Party’s support for City College of San Francisco.

The Empire Strikes Back – Rob Anderson, Others Possibly on the Hook for $52K due to the Bike Plan Injunction

[UPDATE: Word comes from City Attorney Press Secretary Matt Dorsey. Yes, they're looking for $52k:

"The City is seeking to recover its costs related to the preparation of the administrative record and excerpts of the record requested by the court.  We are also seeking to recover the costs we incurred in serving by messenger the attorney for the petitioner.  The recovery of these costs, which total $51,959, is authorized by the California Code of Civil Procedure.  

Aggressively pursuing the fullest possible recovery of the City's costs in litigation is a standard practice by the City Attorney's Office.  (And I would assume that's similarly true of other law offices, both public and private.)"

And here's another update:

"We're seeking to recover costs from the petitioners as a whole, so all of them.  Assuming we prevail, they can decide among themselves how to apportion what they owe.  

Also, we haven't received a copy of it yet, but it appears from the docket that Ms. Miles filed a motion to strike the cost bill.  The hearing is set for January 7."

So, there you have it.]

[Launching watermelons (two minutes long - there's a nice payoff with a slo mo bonus) can be fun but it's always best to quit while you're ahead...]

I don’t know, I can’t say I understand all this about social gadfly Rob Anderson, or the Coalition for Adequate Review (CAR), or “Ninty-Nine Percent Anderson” or some other person or entity being on the hook for expenses incurred by the City and County of San Francisco because of the whole Bicyle Plan injunction/litigation thing.

But word on the street today is that S.F. is pressing the case to get $52k in legal costs reimbursed. It’s all explained on the Holier Than You blog.

See?  (I’ll tell you, physics majors who went to UC Hastings are known to be extremely reliable sources of information, so that’s why I’m buying all this.)

Anyway, appears as if this case will continue into 2011, believe it or not.

‘Healthy San Francisco’ stands, as U.S. Supreme Court denies legal challenge. Rejection ends four-year legal battle over popular universal health care program that serves more than 53,000 San Franciscans

 

SAN FRANCISCO (June 28, 2010) — The U.S. Supreme Court this morning denied review to a legal challenge to a key provision of “Healthy San Francisco,” conclusively ending a contentious four-year attack aimed at gutting the City’s popular universal health care program.  At issue in the lawsuit brought by Golden Gate Restaurant Association in 2006 was whether the federal Employee Retirement Income Security Act, or ERISA, preempts local laws such as San Francisco’s from requiring ongoing employer spending for employee health benefits, or alternative payments to a local government.  In rejecting GGRA’s petition for review on this, the last day of the Supreme Court’s 2009-10 term, the high court effectively sustained a Sept. 30, 2008 Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling upholding the legality of the City’s employer spending requirement for health care.
